Backup. If your computer refuses to boot or load Windows or if you are trying to restore an image to a partition the Reflect cannot lock (See here), and then you will have to start your PC using a rescue CD. Create Bootable Rescue CD. Install Reflect on your computer. Launch Macrium Reflect, the second screen you will see will ask for your licence. This version is free so the licence is already shown so just click OK. Click on Other Tasks to open another menu and click Create Bootable CD. Put a blank Cd in the disc burner then on the next screen choose the top option Linux. Linux This rescue CD uses a small and efficient version of the Linux operating system to start your PC and detect attached local and remote hard drives and computers. It also offers support for Mouse and Keyboard with USB, PS/2 and wireless connections. Using this CD you will be able to locate and restore any partition(s) saved on attached drives in minutes. Updates Click to check for a newer version of the CD Press next and confirm the disc burner selection before pressing finish.

Advanced Click to solve boot problems with the Linux CD CD/DVD Burner Select either your attached CD/DVD burner or create an ISO image file. An ISO image file is an exact copy of the CD and can be saved to disk to be burnt using most CD burning software. Click 'Finish' to burn the CD. Click on Backup tasks Create a Disc Image. Click on Create a backup image of an entire disc or selected partitions. This will launch the Backup wizard.

Follow the instructions.

Select one or more partitions to include in the backup. To select all partitions for a particular disk select the check box next to the disk description. Choose the destination directory or CD / DVD burner for the new backup image. The destination file name is always appended with the increment number and file number. This ensures that no duplicate file names are generated. The initial file name is a unique 16 byte Hex value (128 bit). This value is the unique Image ID that is assigned to all full backups. You can change the file name to any legal file name value but this will NOT alter the Image ID which is stored with the data. It is recommended that you leave the filename at the default value. The final dialog shows a summary of all selections in the backup wizard. Click 'Advanced' to set further settings for this backup. Click here for more information. Click 'Finish' for execution and save options below:

Select the save and execution options as desired. Restoring. 1. Change the BIOS boot order so the CD or DVD drive is listed first. Some computers are already configured this way but many are not. If the CD or DVD drive is not first in the boot order, your PC will start "normally" (i.e. boot from your hard drive) without even looking at what might be in your disc drive. Note: After setting your optical drive as the first boot device in BIOS, your computer will check that drive for a bootable CD or DVD each time your computer starts. Leaving your PC configured this way shouldn't cause problems unless you plan on leaving a disc in the drive all the time. Changing the boot order of the "bootable" devices on your computer like your hard drive, floppy drive, optical drive, etc. is very easy. The BIOS setup utility is where you change boot order settings. Turn on or restart your computer and watch for a message during the POST about a particular key, usually Del or F2 that you'll need to press to...enter SETUP. Press this key as soon as you see the message. After pressing the correct keyboard command from the previous step, you will enter the BIOS Setup Utility. All BIOS utilities are a little different so yours may look like this or it may look completely different. No matter how your BIOS setup utility appears, they are all basically a set of menus containing many different settings for your computer's hardware. In this particular BIOS, the menu options are listed horizontally at the top of the screen, the hardware options are listed in the middle of the screen (grey area), and the instructions for how to move around the BIOS and make changes are listed at the bottom of the screen. Using the instructions given for navigating around your BIOS utility, locate the option for changing the boot order.

Note: Since every BIOS setup utility is different, the specifics on where the boot order options are located vary from computer to computer. The menu option or configuration item might be called Boot Options, Boot, Boot Order, etc. The boot order option may even be located within a general menu option like Advanced Options, Advanced BIOS Features, or Other Options. In the example BIOS above, the boot order changes are made under the Boot menu. The boot order options in most BIOS setup utilities will look something like the screenshot above. Any hardware connected to your motherboard that is able to be booted from - like your hard drive, floppy drive, and optical drive - will be listed here. Some newer computers even let you boot from devices like flash drives, network resources, and other sources. The order in which the devices are listed is the order in which your computer will look for operating system information - in other words, the "boot order." With the boot order shown above, BIOS will first try to boot from any removable devices - like floppy drives or flash drives. If no removable devices are bootable, BIOS will next try the hard drive, followed by the CD-ROM drive, and finally the network. To change which device to boot from first, follow the directions on the BIOS setup utility screen to change the boot order. In this example BIOS, the boot order can be changed using the + and - keys. Remember, your BIOS may have different instructions.

As you can see above, we've changed the boot order from Removable Devices shown in the previous step to the CD-ROM Drive as an example. BIOS will now look for a bootable CD in the optical disc drive first, before trying to boot to any removable media like a floppy drive and also before trying to boot to the hard drive or a network resource. Make whatever boot order changes you need and then proceed to the next step to save your settings Before your boot order changes take effect, you will need to save the BIOS changes you made. To save your changes, follow the instructions given to you in your BIOS utility to navigate to the Exit or Save and Exit menu. Locate and choose the Exit Saving Changes (or similarly worded) option to save the changes you made to the boot order. Choose Yes when prompted to save your BIOS configuration changes and exit. Note: This Setup Confirmation message can sometimes be cryptic. The example above is pretty clear but I've seen many BIOS change confirmation questions that are so "wordy" that they're often difficult to understand. Read the message carefully to be sure that you're actually saving your changes and not exiting without saving changes. Your boot order changes, and any other changes you may have made while in BIOS, are now saved and your computer will restart automatically.

2. Insert your bootable CD or bootable DVD in your disc drive. 3. Restart your computer. 4. Watch for a Press any key to boot from CD or DVD... message. When booting to a Windows setup CD/DVD and many other bootable discs, you may be prompted with a message to press a key to boot to the disc. To boot to the CD or DVD, you'll need to press any key on your keyboard (like the space bar) within the few seconds that the message is on the screen. Connect the drive containing the Disc Image. Start the PC from the rescue CD as above and after a few moments an introduction screen appears. Click next to eject the CD, and start the Restore Wizard. The Restore Wizard steps you through the options required to restore a backup image of one or more partitions: Click 'Next' to continue. Navigate to the folder that contains the image to be restored in the left hand pane. The recent locations folder shows folders used for the last five backups.

The backup list shows all backup images in the selected folder and the pane below shows the partitions included in the image. Highlight particular backup image that you want to restore and click 'Next'. You can only restore one partition at any one time. Using this dialog select the partition that you want to restore and click 'Next'. Select the destination for the restored partition. By default, the original location will be highlighted and selected. You can however restore to any partition or groups of adjacent partitions on the same disk. To select multiple partitions to overwrite hold down the control key whilst clicking with the left mouse button. You must create enough space for the restored partition. If the total space of the selected partitions is less than the size of the partition to be restored then the 'Next' button will be disabled. Click 'Next' to continue.

When you click 'Next' reflect attempts to lock (remove from the operating system) the selected partition(s). This is not always possible, your 'C:' drive for example, will be in use by Windows itself, in that case the following dialog will be displayed: Close all Windows. It may be that an open application is stopping Reflect from locking a partition. Try closing all visible windows on your desktop and select this option to try again. Windows boot menu. Close all open applications Click 'OK' to reboot Select 'Macrium Reflect System Recovery' from the Windows boot menu when your PC restarts. The Windows boot menu option will start your PC in the Reflect recovery environment (Windows PE 2.0). This is an identical environment to the Windows PE rescue CD. For more information please see here. Rescue CD. Close all open applications Insert your Macrium rescue CD Click 'OK' to reboot

Partition Active. Primary. Logical. Type Description A disk can have only one Active partition. The active partition is a Primary partition that contains the operating system (Windows) that starts when you turn on the computer. A disk can have up to four Primary partitions or three Primary partitions and an extended partition containing logical drives. Primary partitions generally contain operating systems. Multiple Primary partitions are used when you have more than one operating system on the same computer. A disk can contain up to 23 Logical Drives. Windows cannot be started from a logical drive so these drives can only be used to store data not operating systems. By default the original partition type is selected. However, this may not be possible in all cases. Certain rules apply to the placement of partitions on the hard disk. Including the total number of primary and active partitions (as explained above) and the fact that all logical partitions must be in a contiguous area on the disk called the 'Extended Partition'. Click 'Next' to continue. If it is possible to resize the new partition to fill the space created by overwriting the previously selected partitions then you will be shown this dialog. Using the slider or arrow controls increase the size of the new partition if required. The minimum size will always be the size of the original partition being restored. The maximum size will be the smaller of: The size of the space created by deleting the partitions to overwrite. The maximum size of a partition based on the file system and cluster size. Click 'Next' to continue.

Select whether to assign a drive letter to the restored partition. Select from a drop down list of available drive letters. The selected drive letter will be permanent and will persist through successive reboots of the operating system. Click 'Next' to continue. Select whether to verify the restored file system at next Windows restart. Although 'Reflect' checks the file system for integrity before backing up, it is possible for certain file system errors to persist through to restore. This will not involve any loss of data. If you select 'No' here you can run 'chkdsk c: /f' at any time from the command prompt.

Click 'Next' to continue. You have the option here to verify the image before restoring. If selected then the restore will not start until the image has been successfully verified. The image is also verified as it is being restored and will abort the restore if damaged data is attempted to be read. It can take several minutes to verify an image, but, if the data is stored on optical media (CD / DVD) then it is recommended that you verify as this medium is inherently less reliable that hard disk based storage. If you are restoring to a new or different hard drive then verification is not strictly necessary, as the restore will abort if corrupt data is read and you can then try a different image (if available). Click 'Next' to continue.

The Master Boot Record a small program that executes when the computer starts up. If this program has become corrupt, perhaps due to a virus, then you may have problems starting the computer operating system. Each backup contains a copy of the Master Boot Record which can be recovered by checking the 'Yes' box. Click 'Next' to continue. The final dialog shows a summary of all selections in the restore wizard. Click 'Finish' to start the restore.
