11 SCORING GUIDELINES (Form B) Question 1 A cylindrical can of radius 1 millimeters is used to measure rainfall in Stormville. The can is initially empty, and rain enters the can during a 6-day period. The height of water in the can is modeled by the function S, where St () is measured in millimeters and t is measured in days for t 6. The rate at which the height of the water is rising in the can is given by S ( t) = sin(.t) (a) According to the model, what is the height of the water in the can at the end of the 6-day period? According to the model, what is the average rate of change in the height of water in the can over the 6-day period? Show the computations that lead to your answer. Indicate units of measure. (c) Assuming no evaporation occurs, at what rate is the volume of water in the can changing at time t = 7? Indicate units of measure. (d) During the same 6-day period, rain on Monsoon Mountain accumulates in a can identical to the one in Stormville. The height of the water in the can on Monsoon Mountain is modeled by the function M, where 1 M () t = ( t t + t). The height M ( t ) is measured in millimeters, and t is measured in days 4 for t 6. Let Dt ( ) = M ( t) S ( t). Apply the Intermediate Value Theorem to the function D on the interval t 6 to justify that there eists a time t, < t < 6, at which the heights of water in the two cans are changing at the same rate. 6 (a) S( 6) = S ( t) dt = mm 1 : limits 1 : integrand S( 6) S( ) 6 =.86 or.864 mm day (c) V() t = 1π S() t V ( 7) = 1π S ( 7) = 6.18 The volume of water in the can is increasing at a rate of 6.18 mm day. 1 : relationship between V and S : { (d) D ( ) =.675 < and D ( 6) = > Because D is continuous, the Intermediate Value Theorem implies that there is a time t, < t < 6, at which Dt ( ) =. At this time, the heights of water in the two cans are changing at the same rate. 1 : considers D( ) and D( 6) : 1 : justification 1 : units in or (c) 11 The College Board.

11 SCORING GUIDELINES (Form B) Question A 1,-liter tank of water is filled to capacity. At time t =, water begins to drain out of the tank at a rate modeled by rt (), measured in liters per hour, where r is given by the piecewise-defined function 6t for t 5 rt () = t +.t 1e for t > 5 (a) Is r continuous at t = 5? Show the work that leads to your answer. Find the average rate at which water is draining from the tank between time t = and time t = 8 hours. (c) Find r (. ) Using correct units, eplain the meaning of that value in the contet of this problem. (d) Write, but do not solve, an equation involving an integral to find the time A when the amount of water in the tank is 9 liters. (a) lim rt () ( ) = lim = 75 = r( 5) t 5 t 5 6t t +.t () ( e ) lim rt = lim 1 = t 5 t 5 : conclusion with analysis Because the left-hand and right-hand limits are not equal, r is not continuous at t = t 8.t rt () dt= 1 8 dt e dt 8 + t 5 + = 58.5 or : integrand 1 : limits and constant (c) r ( ) = 5 The rate at which water is draining out of the tank at time t = hours is increasing at 5 liters hour. : 1 : r ( ) 1 : meaning of r ( ) A (d) 1, rt () dt= 9 : { 1 : integral 1 : equation 11 The College Board.

11 SCORING GUIDELINES (Form B) Question The functions f and g are given by f ( ) = and g( ) = 6. Let R be the region bounded by the -ais and the graphs of f and g, as shown in the figure above. (a) Find the area of R. The region R is the base of a solid. For each y, where y, the cross section of the solid taken perpendicular to the y-ais is a rectangle whose base lies in R and whose height is y. Write, but do not evaluate, an integral epression that gives the volume of the solid. (c) There is a point P on the graph of f at which the line tangent to the graph of f is perpendicular to the graph of g. Find the coordinates of point P. (a) Area 4 = 4 1 d+ = = = + = 1 : integral 1 : antiderivative y = = y y = 6 = 6 y Width = ( 6 y) y Volume = ( ) y 6 y y dy { : integrand (c) g ( ) = 1 Thus a line perpendicular to the graph of g has slope 1. 1 f ( ) = = = 4 The point P has coordinates ( 1 1 ),. 4 1 : f ( ) 1 : equation 11 The College Board.

11 SCORING GUIDELINES (Form B) Question 4 Consider a differentiable function f having domain all positive real numbers, and for which it is known that f ( ) = ( 4 ) for >. (a) Find the -coordinate of the critical point of f. Determine whether the point is a relative maimum, a relative minimum, or neither for the function f. Justify your answer. Find all intervals on which the graph of f is concave down. Justify your answer. (c) Given that f ( 1) =, determine the function f. (a) f ( ) = at = 4 f ( ) > for < < 4 f ( ) < for > 4 Therefore f has a relative maimum at = 4. 1 : = 4 1 : relative maimum 1 : justification 4 f ( ) = + ( 4 )( ) 4 = = ( 6) ( 6) = 4 f ( ) < for < < 6 : f ( ) with justification The graph of f is concave down on the interval < < 6. (c) f( ) = + ( 4t t ) 1 1 = + t + t = + 1 dt t= t= 1 1 : integral 1 : antiderivative 11 The College Board.

11 SCORING GUIDELINES (Form B) Question 5 t (seconds) B( t ) (meters) vt ( ) (meters per second) Ben rides a unicycle back and forth along a straight east-west track. The twice-differentiable function B models Ben s position on the track, measured in meters from the western end of the track, at time t, measured in seconds from the start of the ride. The table above gives values for B( t ) and Ben s velocity, vt ( ), measured in meters per second, at selected times t. (a) Use the data in the table to approimate Ben s acceleration at time t = 5 seconds. Indicate units of measure. 6 Using correct units, interpret the meaning of vt () dt in the contet of this problem. Approimate 6 vt () dt using a left Riemann sum with the subintervals indicated by the data in the table. (c) For 4 t 6, must there be a time t when Ben s velocity is meters per second? Justify your answer. (d) A light is directly above the western end of the track. Ben rides so that at time t, the distance Lt ( ) between Ben and the light satisfies ( Lt ()) = 1 + ( Bt ()). At what rate is the distance between Ben and the light changing at time t = 4? v( 1) v( ). (a) a( 5) = =. meters sec vt () dt is the total distance, in meters, that Ben rides over the 6-second interval t = to t = 6. 1 : meaning of integral : { 1 : approimation 6 vt () dt. 1 +.( 4 1) +.5( 6 4) = 19 meters B( 6) B( 4) 49 9 (c) Because = =, the Mean Value Theorem 6 4 implies there is a time t, 4 < t < 6, such that vt ( ) =.
