1 CURRICULUM-BASED ASSESSMENT First Grading Period October STUDENT NAME DATE Social Studies Grade 5 Read each question and choose the best answer. Be sure to mark all of your answers. John Smith 1 Captain John Smith was one of the first American heroes. Smith was elected an early president of the local council appointed to rule Jamestown. John Smith became leader of the colonists. He emphasized strict discipline, encouraged farming and building homes. Smith would say, He who does not work, will not eat. Because of his strong leadership, the settlement of Jamestown survived and grew. 2 Smith led expeditions along the coast. In December 1607, they were attacked by Indians. After killing the other Englishmen with him, the Indians carried Smith back to their chief, Powhatan. Powhatan was greatly impressed by Smith s self-confidence as well as his mystical instruments (a glass pocket compass that he carried with him). Smith was asked to take part in a ritual. As he lived with the Indians and adapted to their way of life, he was always unsure of his fate. 3 John Smith was later released in friendship after about four weeks of captivity and returned to Jamestown. He was guided by the Indians. During this time, the colony of Jamestown was not progressing. This was happening because of lack of supplies, colonists not wanting to work, colonist leaving the colony, and disagreements and personal conflicts between Smith and various leaders. As a result of this, Smith left Jamestown to explore and map the Chesapeake Bay area. He searched for food supplies which were badly needed by the colonists.
