1 Lesson 4: The Vowel O o You will need the following: the cards you previously used, one blank index card, and a pen. The o vowel sound in this lesson is the sound at the beginning of octopus. It is the short sound of o and is marked in the dictionary as o with a breve over it: /ŏ/. Review Let s begin this lesson by saying the first, second, and third verses of the poem The Five Vowels together three times. Now I will show you the cards from the previous lessons. Together let s point to the a card and say the short-a vowel sound: /ă/. Now let s point to the e card and say the short-e vowel sound: /ĕ/. Now let s point to the i card and say the short-i vowel sound: /ĭ/. Now I am going to ask you some questions about the sounds of the short vowels. What is the short-vowel sound of a? Point to the a card. If the child can t remember the answer, say the first part of each verse as a reminder. What is the short-vowel sound of e? Point to the e card. What is the short-vowel sound of i? Point to the i card. New Today we are going to learn the letter o. O is also a vowel. This is the big O and the little o: Point to the letters below. O o I will write the vowel o on a card for you. I will write the big O and the little o. 12

2 Write O and o side-by-side on a card (or show the purchased O o card). Together: When you see the letter o at the beginning or in the middle of a short word, you usually say this sound: /ŏ/ as in octopus. The letter o stands for the sound /ŏ/. Now we will say the sound together. /ŏ/, /ŏ/, /ŏ/, /ŏ/, /ŏ/. I am going to teach you the fourth verse of the poem The Five Vowels. I will say this to you three more times. Say the verse slowly three times, taking care to emphasize the sound /ŏ/. Now repeat after me: Now let s say both lines together three times. Let s add today s verse to all the verses you have learned, and say them together three times. What is the short-vowel sound of o? Follow-Up: Ask the child to repeat the o verse from the poem two more times during the day. If you recorded a tape, record the new verse onto the same tape. Point out the letter o to the child whenever you see it (on signs, on food boxes or cans, and in books you read aloud to him). Ask him to recite the verse from this lesson to you. 13

Review Let s begin this lesson by saying the first four verses of the poem The Five Vowels together three times. Now I will show you the cards from the previous lessons. Together let s point to the a card and say the short-a vowel sound: /ă/. Now let s point to the e card and say the short-e vowel sound: /ĕ/. Now let s combine the verses you learned the last four lessons with the verse you learned today. Let s say the entire poem together three times. 15

5 /ŭ/ is the short-vowel sound of u. What is the short-vowel sound of u? /ŭ/ is the short-vowel sound of u. Game: Short Vowel Pick-Up Put all the vowel cards on the table. Say one of the short-vowel sounds. The child will then pick up the letter card that he thinks represents that sound. If he picks the right card, he gets the card; if he doesn t, you get the card. Once you have gone through all the vowels, have the child practice the vowel sounds on the cards that you are holding. Then shuffle all the cards and begin the game again. Follow-Up: Ask the child to repeat the u verse from the poem two more times during the day. If you recorded a tape, record the new verse onto the same tape. Point out the letter u to the child whenever you see it (on signs, on food boxes or cans, and in books you read aloud to him). Ask him to recite the verse from this lesson to you. 16

6 Section 2 Consonant Sounds Lesson 6: The Consonant B b You will need the following: the cards you used previously, one blank index card, and a pen. Review We have learned all of the names of the vowels, a, e, i, o, u, as well as the short-vowel sounds, /ă/, /ĕ/, /ĭ/, /ŏ/, /ŭ/. Do you remember that a vowel sound is not blocked by your tongue or your lips? I will show you each vowel card, and we will say the sound of that short vowel together. Go through the cards in order, and say each sound slowly. If the child has trouble, have him repeat the sounds after you. Many children need extra practice hearing and saying the difference between the shorte vowel sound and the short-i vowel sound. New B b The letters that are not vowels are called consonants. When you say the sound of a consonant, you do block the sound or the air with your tongue or your lips. Today we are going to learn the consonant b. This is the big B and the little b: I will write the consonant b on a card for you. First I will write the big B, and then I will write the little b. Write the big B and the little b side-by-side on the index card. The letter b usually stands for the sound /b/. Watch my mouth as I say that sound. My lips will block the sound of my voice: /b/. Remember, the sound of a consonant letter is blocked by your tongue or your lips. The sound /b/ is called a voiced consonant sound because you use your voice to pronounce the sound. I will point to the letter b card and say the consonant sound five times. Even though the sound /b/ requires using the voice, don t prolong the sound of /b/ so it sounds like /buh/. Together: /b/, /b/, /b/, /b/, /b/. Now we will say the sound together. /b/, /b/, /b/, /b/, /b/. Listen as I say these words that begin with the sound /b/: bat, bad, bed, bet. Now repeat after me: /b/, /b/, bat. /b/, /b/, bat. 17

7 /b/, /b/, bed. /b/, /b/, bed. Now listen as I read words that end with the sound /b/: tab, fib, sob, tub. Listen for the sound of the letter b as you repeat these words after me: tab. tab. fib. fib. Now I am going to teach you a poem that will help you remember the sounds of the consonants. It is called The Consonant Rhyme. This is the first line: I will say this to you three more times. Say the line slowly three times, taking care to emphasize the sound /b/. Repeat after me: Let s say that together three times. I am going to ask you a question. Answer me with the line from the poem. For what sound does the letter b stand? Follow-Up: The child should repeat the b line from the poem two more times during the day. You may also wish to record yourself or your child saying this line onto a tape so that the child can listen to the poem over and over. As each line of the poem is added in subsequent lessons, record it onto the same tape. Point out the letter b to the child whenever you see it (on signs, on food boxes or cans, in books you read aloud to him). Ask him to recite the line from this lesson to you. 18
