1 SECTION STRUCTURAL STEEL FRAMING PART 1 GENERAL 1.1 DESCRIPTION OF WORK A. Extent of structural steel work is shown on drawings, including schedules, notes and details to show size and location of members, typical connections and type of steel required. B. Structural steel is that work defined in AISC "Code of Standard Practice", 2005 Edition and as otherwise shown on drawings. C. Miscellaneous Metal Fabrications are specified in Section "Metal Fabrication". 1.2 QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Codes and Standards: Comply with provisions of following, except as otherwise indicated. B. AISC "Code of Standard Practice for Steel Buildings and Bridges", 2005 Edition. C. AISC "Specifications for the Design, Fabrication, and Erection of Structural Steel for Buildings", including the Commentary and supplements thereto as issued. D. AISC "Specifications for Structural Joints using ASTM A 325 or A 490 Bolts", 2004 Edition, approved by the Research Council on Riveted and Bolted Structural Joints of the Engineering Foundation. E. AWS D "Structural Welding Code". F. ASTM A a "Standard Specifications for Structural Steel Shapes". G. ASTM A "Standard Specifications for Carbon Structural Steel". H. Qualifications for Welding Work: Qualify welding processes and welding operators in accordance with AWS "Standard Qualification Procedure". I. The steel fabricator and the steel erector shall be AISC Certified for Conventional Steel Building Structures.

2 1.3 TESTING AND INSPECTION A. A special inspector, which is an independent testing laboratory selected and paid for by the Owner (or by the Contractor as assigned by the Owner and acceptable to the Architect), shall check structural steel erection for compliance with the International Building Code (IBC), Chapter 17 and Table Testing agency shall also check structural erection for compliance with AISC Specifications including Section 8 of the "Structural Joints Using ASTM A 325 or A 490 Bolts", 2004 Edition. Contractor shall coordinate erection and testing to facilitate construction. Testing agency shall demonstrate to the satisfaction of the authorities having jurisdiction, competence to perform special inspections. B. Inspection will be required of a random selection of 10% of all high strength shop and field bolting. To be acceptable, 95% of all bolts tested shall comply with Section 8 and Section 9 of the AISC "Specification for Structural Joints Using ASTM A 325 or A 490 Bolts", 2004 Edition. If the bolting fails to meet these requirements, bolts shall be reworked by the Contractor and additional tests of 50% of all bolts shall be made until the above requirements are met. Additional testing shall be at the Contractor s expense. C. Testing laboratory shall perform visual inspection on 10% of all fabricated pieces prior to shipping and on all field work (as applicable) at the site as follows: 1. Beam/Column Moment Connection Welds: 100% 2. Beam to Column/Ended Plate Welds and Brace Welds: 100% 3. Joist Girder to Column/Beam Welds: 50% 4. Joist to Beam/Embed Plate Welds: 10% 5. Edge Angle to Beam/Joist Welds: 10% 6. Miscellaneous Framing Welds: 10% To be acceptable, 85% of all visual welds shall be in accordance with AWS D If the welds fail to meet this requirement, the welds shall be reworked by the Contractor and additional visual inspections of 100% of all welds shall be made until the above requirements are met. Additional testing shall be at the Contractor s expense. D. Perform ultrasonic testing in accordance with AWS D on 100% of all partial and full penetration welds (if applicable). 1.4 SUBMITTALS

3 A. Product Data: Submit producer s or manufacturer s specifications and installation instructions for following products. Include laboratory test reports and other data to show compliance with specifications (including specified standards). 1. Mill reports covering chemical and physical properties. 2. High strength bolts (each type), including nuts and washers. 3. Structural steel primer paint. 4. Shrinkage-resistant grout. B. Shop Drawings: Submit shop drawings prepared under supervision of a registered professional engineer, including complete details and schedules for fabrication and assembly of structural steel members, procedures and diagrams. The Owner will not pay for additional charges due to redetailing fees associated with a three-dimensional detailing program. The detailer shall estimate and include any costs in the base bid associated with redetailing fees as a result of changes and/or revisions made to the shop drawings during the shop drawing review. C. Provide setting drawings, templates, and directions for installation of anchor bolts and other anchorages to be installed by others. D. Inspection reports will include the following: 1. Welders Certification. 2. Weld Qualified Tests. 3. Visual Inspections. 4. Results of specified tests. 5. Recommendations for further testing. 1.5 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING A. Deliver materials to the site at such intervals to ensure uninterrupted progress of the work. Deliver anchor bolts and anchorage devices, which are to be embedded in cast-in-place concrete or masonry, in ample time to not delay that work. B. Store materials to permit easy access for inspection and identification. Keep steel members off the ground, using pallets, platforms, or other supports. Protect steel members and packaged materials from erosion and deterioration. Do not store materials on the structure in a manner that

4 might cause distortion or damage to the members of the supporting structures. Repair or replace damaged materials or structures as directed. PART 2 PRODUCTS 2.1 MATERIALS A. Materials which are smooth and free of surface blemishes. B. Structural steel angles, plates and bars: ASTM A C. Structural steel I-shapes: ASTM A a. D. Hot-Formed Steel Tubing: ASTM A E. Cold-Formed Steel Tubing: ASTM A a. F. Bolts: ASTM A G. Anchor Rods: ASTM F , Grade 36 headed type unless otherwise indicated. H. Hex Nuts: ASTM A Grade A. I. Hardened Steel Washers: ASTM F Type 1. J. Structural Steel Primer Paint: Fabricator s standard rust-inhibiting grey primer. Do not prime steel that is to receive fire-proofing spray. K. Non-Shrink Non-Metallic Grout: Pre-mixed, factory-packaged, non-staining, non-corrosive, nongaseous grout complying with Corps of Engineers CRD-C Provide grout specifically recommended by manufacturer for interior and exterior applications of type specified in this section. 2.2 FABRICATION A. Shop Fabrication and Assembly: Fabricate and assemble structural assemblies in shop to greatest extent possible. Fabricate items of structural steel in accordance with AISC Code of Standard Practice 2005 edition and as indicated on final shop drawings. B. Properly mark and match-mark materials for field assembly. Fabricate for delivery sequence that will expedite erection and minimize field handling of materials.

5 C. Where finishing is required, complete assembly, including welding of units, before start of finishing operations. Provide finish surfaces of members exposed in final structure free of markings, burrs, and other defects. D. Connections: Weld or bolt shop connections, as indicated. E. Bolt field connections, except where welded connections or other connections are indicated. F. Provide high-strength threaded fasteners for principal bolted connections, except where unfinished bolts are indicated. G. Provide unfinished threaded fasteners for only bolted connections of secondary framing members to primary members (including purlins, girts and other framing members taking only nominal stresses) and for temporary bracing to facilitate erection. H. High Strength Bolted Construction: Install high-strength threaded fasteners in accordance with AISC "Specifications for Structural Joints using ASTM A 325 or A 490 Bolts", 2004 Edition. Bolts shall be "snug-tight". I. Holes for Other Work: Provide holes required for securing other work to structural steel framing, and for passage of other work through steel framing members, as shown on final shop drawings. J. Provide threaded nuts welded to framing, and other specialty items as indicated to receive other work. K. Cut, drill, or punch holes perpendicular to metal surfaces. Do not flame cut holes or enlarge holes by burning. Drill holes in bearing plates. PART 3 EXECUTION 3.1 INSPECTION A. Erector must examine the areas and conditions under which structural steel work is to be installed, and notify the contractor in writing of conditions detrimental to the proper and timely completion of the work. Do not proceed with the work until unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected in a manner acceptable to the erector. 3.2 ERECTION A. Temporary Shoring and Bracing: Contractor shall provide temporary shoring and bracing members with connections of sufficient strength to bear imposed loads. Remove temporary

6 members and connections when permanent members are in place and final connections are made. Provide temporary guy lines to achieve proper alignment of structures as erection proceeds. B. Temporary Planking: Contractor shall provide temporary planking and working platforms as necessary to effectively complete work. C. Contractor shall hire shoring sub-contractors for engineered design and drawings required for adequate shoring, bracing, or planking. D. Anchor Rods: Furnish anchor rods and other connectors required for securing structural steel to foundations and other in-place work. E. Furnish templates and other devices as necessary for presetting bolts and other anchors to accurate locations. F. Setting Bases and Bearing Plates: Clean concrete and masonry bearing surfaces of bond-reducing materials and roughen to improve bond to surfaces. Clean bottom surface of base and bearing plates. G. Set loose and attached base plates and bearing plates for structural members on leveling nuts. H. Tighten anchor rods after supported members have been positioned and plumbed. I. Pack grout solidly between bearing surfaces and bases or plates to ensure that no voids remain. Finish exposed surfaces, protect installed materials, and allow to cure. J. For proprietary grout materials, comply with manufacturer s instructions. K. Field Assembly: Set structural frames accurately to lines and elevations indicated. Align and adjust various members forming a part of complete frame or structure before permanently fastening. Clean bearing surfaces and other surfaces that will be in permanent contact before assembly. Perform necessary adjustments to compensate for discrepancies in elevations and alignment. L. Level and plumb individual members of structure within specified AISC tolerances. M. Establish required leveling and plumbing measurements on mean operating temperature of structure. Make allowances for difference between temperature at time of erection and mean temperature at which structure will be when completed and in service. N. Bolts shall be snug-tight. O. Splice members only where indicated and accepted on shop drawings.

7 P. Erection Bolts: On exposed welded construction, remove erection bolts. Q. Comply with AISC Specifications for bearing, adequacy of temporary connections, alignment, and removal of paint on surfaces adjacent to field welds. R. Do not enlarge unfair holes in members by burning or by use of drift pins, except in secondary bracing members. Ream holes that must be enlarged to admit bolts. S. Gas Cutting: Do not use gas-cutting torches in field for correcting fabrication errors in primary structural framing. Cutting will be permitted only on secondary members that are not under stress, as acceptable to engineer. Finish gas-cut sections equal to a sheared appearance when permitted. T. Touch-Up Painting: Immediately after erection, clean field welds, bolted connections, and abraded areas of shop paint. Apply paint to exposed areas using same material as used for shop painting. U. Apply by brush or spray to provide a minimum dry film thickness of 1.5 mils. END OF SECTION
