4 School District of Janesville Wellness Program Proposal Philosophy Health and Safety is a key Pillar of the School District of Janesville s ongoing Journey to Excellence. Through the development of a Districtwide wellness program, the School District of Janesville strives to increase the well-being and productivity of all employees, through the enhancement of all aspects of health. The goals of the District s wellness program will include: Creating an organizational culture that promotes health and wellness; Ensuring that District policies and procedures enhance employee health and productivity; Offering incentives that motivate employees to engage in healthy practices; Promoting fiscal responsibility by lowering health care costs to both the District and employees. Collaboration is the key to the success of any new initiative. It is our hope to involve district administration, key staff members at each building, and our community partners in order to develop and maintain a sustainable and effective wellness program that benefits both our individual staff members and the District as an organization. Timeline The framework of the District s Wellness Program is summarized in the attached Timeline which outlines monthly features and activities. Components Each month, the District wellness program will feature the following components: Featured topics of interest to educate staff on health-related issues, through a monthly Benefits/Wellness newsletter, direct s to staff, and use of the District s website and cable channel. A monthly fitness challenge to get staff involved in physical activity and create excitement and buy-in to the program. Ongoing fitness activities/classes offered to staff, to be led by staff members with expertise in specific activities, or by working with community partners to provide on-site or discounted off-site classes. Other Wellness Activities which will center around aspects of wellness that are not specifically physical fitness-related; for example, healthy cooking classes (nutrition), seminars on financial issues (financial wellness), meditation or stress relief classes (emotional wellness), opportunities for staff to socialize outside of the workplace (social wellness), smoking cessation seminars, or ongoing weight watcher s meetings. [Note: Spiritual Wellness is

5 considered one of the Six Dimensions of Wellness as Developed by Dr. Bill Hettler, co-founder of the National Wellness Institute (NWI). While the District cannot promote religious activities, it should be noted that staff are offered paid time off for religious observances that do not fall within the standard District calendar, and this information should be included within the District s overall Wellness Program. The Six Dimensions of Wellness are: Physical, Emotional, Spiritual, Intellectual, Environmental and Social.] Other components of the Wellness Program may include: Quarterly health screenings (blood pressure, blood sugar, vision screening, mental health screening, etc as available through our insurance carriers or community partners such as Walgreens or CVS) Annual flu shots (Continuation of current process. Recommend offering to all staff at no cost.) EAP and Safety should also be components of the Wellness Program Monthly Fitness Challenges may include: Steppin into the School Year Step Challenge Fall Scavenger Hunt Walk Challenge 12 Days of Christmas Fitness Challenge Biggest Loser Challenge (run 1/1 through 3/31) Try Something New Month 30 Minutes a Day Challenge Spring Scavenger Hunt Challenge Presidents Month Walk Across the USA Challenge 26.2 Mile Run/Walk Challenge Summer Challenge: Log 30 minutes 3x a week of the activity of your choice or participate in a community event Fitness Activities may include: Yoga Strength Training Swimming Zumba Dance Classes Open gym sessions for use of fitness equipment at middle/high schools

6 Other Wellness Areas/Activities may include: Nutrition healthy cooking classes Weight Watchers ongoing meetings Smoking cessation seminars Financial seminars retirement, identity theft, investing for the future. Lunch & Learn opportunities on various topics Social Wellness events such as Districtwide Christmas party, Spring Picnic, Snapper Game outing Meditation/Stress Relief workshops Exploring Diversity: Overview of World Religions Summer Activity: Book A Thon: Read a book (or 2) a month Employee Incentives may include: Drawings for quarterly screening participants Free/low cost fitness trackers for step challenge participants No/low cost seminars on- or off-site (cooking, financial, etc) Recognition of Challenge winners Wellness Champions and Community Partners A Wellness Champion will be identified at each building. The purpose of the Wellness Champion is to provide a contact person at each building who will help disseminate information to building staff, coordinate Challenge activities at their building, and provide feedback to the Wellness Program Coordinator. Organizations participating in the District s Community Connections program will be approached to help provide fitness classes, cooking session, financial seminars or mental health activities as part of the District s wellness program. Measuring Participation and Feedback A Google Form will be created for staff to input activities accomplished and collect suggestions and feedback. This Form will be anonymous, however, names and contact information for staff can be gathered voluntarily if a staff member wants feedback or information. A Google Site can be created as a clearinghouse for information about the wellness program and link to information on various health conditions and other information.

7 Search for an online wellness tracking program such as Vitality. Any program should include mental well-being as recommended by HRA results. (Vitality does)
