1 National Health Leadership Conference Health leaders coaches corner Coach Biographies Dr. Joseph Byrne Director School of Health Administration, Dalhousie University Dr. Joseph Byrne heads a private corporate consulting firm and was previously President of Halifax Neuropsychology Clinic, and is Professor, Dalhousie School of Health Administration. Dr. Byrne has held numerous leadership positions in both the public and private sectors of the healthcare industry. His areas of speciality include psychology of risk assessment and decision-making, executive and leadership training, design and implementation of system change and preventing and resolving conflict amongst professionals. Dr. Brendan S.J. Carr, CHE Executive Vice President & Chief Medical Officer Vancouver Island Health Authority Patricia Conrad Executive Director Newfoundland and Labrador Health Boards Association S. Kevin Empey, CHE Lakeridge Health Corporation S. Kevin Empey is Chief Executive Officer of Lakeridge Health. He is a Chartered Accountant and Canadian Healthcare Executive who is also a graduate of Harvard s Advanced Management Program. Kevin has been President and CEO at Lakeridge since July Kevin has worked as a senior executive in the Hospital sector since 1990, with senior roles at University Health Network, Peel Memorial Hospital and St. Michael s Hospital. He currently is a guest lecturer at University of Toronto s Rotman Business School and HPME Program as well as the York University s Masters Certificate in Health Management Program. He has participated nationally on the Board of the Canadian Institute for Health Information; and provincially on the Joint Policy and Planning Committee; Ontario Hospital Association, Physician Services Committee, and Council of Academic Hospitals of Ontario. He currently is a member of the Provincial Health Service Funding Steering Committee, and Chairs the Technical Advisory Committee.

2 Stephen Gould Executive Vice President, People and Partners Alberta Health Services Jim Hornell Brant Community Healthcare System Prior to coming to the Brant Community Healthcare System based in Brantford & Paris, Ontario, Jim served as Chief Executive Officer of Cypress Regional Health Authority based out of Swift Current, Saskatchewan [home of medicare in Canada] where he had overall responsibility for the full continuum of care in the southwestern region of the province. He was an active participant in that province s Accelerating Excellence and Quality as a Business Strategy initiatives. Jim was also Chief Operating Officer & Vice President Corporate Development with the Central Health Authority in his native Newfoundland. He has baccalaureate degrees from Memorial University in Newfoundland and a Masters degree from the University of Ottawa. Jim is also an accreditation surveyor with Accreditation Canada. As a volunteer, Jim has served at local, provincial, national and international levels within the sport of hockey. Presently, the Executive Vice Chair of Hockey Canada, he has toured internationally with several of Canada s national teams. Jim has also created and delivered organization development, strategic planning and motivational sessions for a variety of diverse clients including established corporate players in the offshore oil & gas industry, finance, fisheries, and government agencies. Jim and his wife Mim have three grown sons, enjoy numerous sport and cultural opportunities and are avid early morning runners. Donald W. M. Juzwishin, CHE Director Health Technology Assessment & Innovation Alberta Health Services - Edmonton Area Dr. Juzwishin is Director of Health Technology Assessment and Innovation at Alberta Health Services. He holds adjunct associate professor status at the University of Alberta in the School of Public Health, University of Calgary in Community Health Sciences and University of Victoria in Health Information Science. He is a member of the Alberta Advisory Committee on Health Technologies whose responsibility is to assist the government in the provincial review of health technologies and services, a member of the Canadian Agency for Drugs and Technology in Health HTA Exchange, and a member of the Canadian College of Health Service Executives Ethics Committee. Don is also a Board of Director and serves as Chair of the Finance and Audit Committee of the Canadian Society for International Health. Dr. Juzwishin has experience in the private sector, government, and public not for profit sector. His management experience is in complex medical teaching hospitals, health authorities, and research

3 funding. His research interests are in health care reform, health technology assessment, health research funding and evidence based policy making. Kenneth McGeorge, CHE York Care Centre Ken McGeorge is President and Chief Executive Officer, York Care Centre, a not-for-profit group of companies located in Fredericton, New Brunswick providing quality long term care services to the aging population. Accomplishments in this role: created a campus of services; established Atlantic Institute on Aging; Established the Symposium on Excellence in Aging Care; completely replaced all nursing home facility with leading-edge, state of the art facilities; nurtured the Narrative Program; Created a Culture of Excellence based on Character; participate in creating unique assisted living facility for low income seniors. Ronnie Miller Roche Canada Ronnie Miller is the President and CEO of Hoffmann-La Roche Limited (Roche Canada). In this role, Ronnie is responsible for the strategic direction, profitability and operations of the pharmaceuticals division in Canada. Ronnie has more than 30 years of extensive and varied experience in the pharmaceutical industry. He began his career in the United Kingdom as a sales representative, and accepted a series of progressive positions including Sales Management, Product Management, Business Unit Director and National Sales Manager. Since joining Roche in 1988, Ronnie has held a held a number of positions of increasing importance, including National Sales Manager in the United Kingdom, International Product Manager in Switzerland, Marketing Director and Deputy Divisional Director of the Pharmaceutical Division in Japan, Xenical global task force leader, and Divisional Director of Pharmaceuticals in the United Kingdom. He was appointed President and CEO of Roche Pharmaceuticals in Canada in April Ronnie Miller is Chair of the Industry Oncology Working Group (IOWG) and member of the Board of Directors of Rx&D, the national association representing Canada s research-based pharmaceutical companies. He was Chair of the Board of Directors of Rx&D from November 2007 to November 2008 and served two subsequent terms as Past Chair. Prior to becoming Rx&D Board Chair, he served on several industry committees including Public Affairs, and Stakeholder Relations and was Chair of the Rx&D Federal Affairs/FPT Relations Standing Committee. Outside Rx&D, Ronnie is a member of the Swiss Canadian Chamber of Commerce, the University Health Network Research Committee, and sits on the Strategic Governance Board of GS1 Canada. Ronnie holds a Bachelor of Science in Economics and Geography from Glasgow University.

4 Brian K. O Rourke Canadian Agency for Drugs & Technologies in Health Dr. Brian O Rourke was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Agency for Drugs and Technologies in Health (CADTH) in April He joined CADTH in January of 2009 following a distinguished career as a Pharmacist and Health Services Operations Officer with the Canadian Forces. Dr. O Rourke served initially as Vice-President of the Common Drug Review, and then as CADTH s Acting President and CEO from September 2009 to April With over 30 years of experience in health care, Dr. O Rourke actively positions CADTH as the leading source of health technology information in Canada. His leadership activities focus on providing health care decision-makers with evidence-based recommendations and advice supporting the optimal use of drugs and other health technologies. Dr. O Rourke holds a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from Dalhousie University and a Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Toronto. He is a member of the Canadian Pharmacists Association, the Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists, the Canadian College of Health Leaders, the Society for Medical Decision Making, and the International Information Network on New & Emerging Health Technologies. He serves on the Board of Directors of the International Association of Health Technology Assessment Agencies, is Chair of the Canadian Health Leadership Network, and is an observer to the Board of Directors of Health Technology Assessment International. A retired Colonel, Dr. O Rourke was appointed by the Governor General as an Officer of the Order of Military Merit in Christine A. Power, CHE Capital District Health Authority Chris Power began her health care career as a frontline nurse. Over the years she has served in progressively more responsible leadership roles, both in Halifax and at Trillium Health Centre in Ontario, always maintaining the passion and compassion that led her to health care. In 2006, Chris became president and CEO of Capital Health where she provides strategic leadership to an organization that serves the health needs of the residents of Halifax Regional Municipality and West Hants, and patients throughout the Maritimes. Chris holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Mount Saint Vincent University and a Masters in Health Services Administration from Dalhousie University. She is a Certified Health Executive with the Canadian College of Health Leaders and holds a Fellowship in Management for Executive Nurses from the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. In 2003, she received the Award for Excellence and Innovation from the Canadian College of Health Services Executives, in 2007 received an Award of Excellence from the Halifax Progress Club. In 2010, she was inducted into the Hall of Fame as one of Canada s Top 100 Most Powerful Women. Chris has been named one of the top 50 CEOs in Atlantic Canada four times. In 2010, she received the Consumers Choice Award for Business Woman of the Year in Nova Scotia. She holds appointments on several Boards, including Chair of the Association of Canadian Academic Health Organizations.

5 Chris s love of family, strong faith and gift of singing keep her grounded in what s important. Kenneth P. Tremblay, CHE Peterborough Regional Health Centre Ken Tremblay joined Peterborough Regional Health Centre as in He has led a significant organizational transformation on three fronts: financial, performance and regional programming. Prior to Peterborough, he was the CEO of Chatham-Kent Health Alliance (CKHA) where he served from Mr. Tremblay led CKHA through a large financial recovery process to become one of Canada's Top 100 Employers and a Best Practice Spotlight Organization with the RNAO. Prior to that, Ken headed an executive search practice for physicians and healthcare executives and was also President and CEO of: St Joseph s Hospital, Brantford; York Central Hospital, Richmond Hill; and, St. Boniface General Hospital, a teaching hospital in Winnipeg. As a volunteer, Ken has been active with organizations like the Canadian College of Health Leaders, Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum, local Chambers of Commerce, the United Way, Greater Peterborough Area Economic Development Corporation and has been a member of Rotary Clubs in Chatham and Peterborough. He enjoys a wide array of interests from canoeing and photography to woodworking and wine collecting he lives in Peterborough with his wife Siobhan. Howard B. Waldner, CHE Vancouver Island Health Authority Howard Waldner joined the Vancouver Island Health Authority as President and Chief Executive Officer in October Prior to this appointment, Howard was the former Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for the Calgary Health Region - a post he held for five years. Preceding the move to Canada in 1999, Howard held several Chief Executive Officer and Senior Executive positions within the National Health Service in the United Kingdom. Howard received his MBA from the University of Glasgow, Scotland and is an active member of the Canadian College of Health Leaders. He is also a Fellow of the UK Institute of Health Care Management and an Adjunct Professor with the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia.
