2 Session descriptions and learning objectives Session 1: Creating positive and supportive learning and work environments Session Presenter: Dr. Derek Puddester Session Description: This session will occur in two parts. First, a mini-lecture will provide participants with a general overview of Physician Health in Canada and will summarize efforts and programs in their own region. Cases will be shared and discussion welcomed. The second part will involve a highly interactive discussion with participants exploring their own questions and thoughts on physician health, and the roles of various stakeholders (hospitals, associations, colleges, governments, patients, communities) in promoting physician sustainability. Participants will have an opportunity to informally review Royal College materials on physician health (e.g. The Royal College Physician Health Guide and Time Management Guide). 1. Summarize best practices in physician health and workplace health; 2. Highlight new resources in physician health and workplace health and 3. Identify their own strategies to promote physician health and workplace health. Session 1A: The role of mindfulness in physician health: A brief look at results from a 2012/13 mindfulness intervention based study Session Presenter: Dr. Shabbir Amanullah Session Description: The impact of physician health is frequently restricted to the clearly ill physician who needs treatment. The problem often is not specifically with that populace, but rather, those with little insight into the impact they have on others. With the help of a grant from the Canadian Medical Foundation (CMF), a study was done in Prince Edward Island looking at the impact of a mindfulness based intervention. The results had a number of interesting findings. Given the major health care transition, participants will have an opportunity to review and compare previous data with findings from this intervention based study. 1. Identify the importance of recognizing warning signs in self and others; 2. Understand and identify mindfulness activities that have personal resonance and 3. Develop a Personal Learning Project to further explore the implications of this study within personal practice settings. Session 2: How to plan a Personal Learning Project (PLP) Session Presenter: Dr. Suzan Schneeweiss Session Description: This interactive session will provide participants with guidance on how to plan and document a Personal Learning Project in MAINPORT. Dr. Puddester and Dr. Amanullah s sessions will be used as an example. Participants will be provided with a CPD planning tool and invited to ask general questions about the Maintenance of Certification program, MAINPORT, and the role of the Royal College in supporting physician lifelong learning. 1. Develop a PLP relevant to their professional practice using a CPD tool; 2. Translate various professional activities including research and teaching into a PLP and 3. Document the learning process in MAINPORT. 2
3 FACULTY (alphabetical) Shabbir Amanullah MBBS, DPM, MD, MRCPsych, CCT (Geriatric Psychiatry), FRCPC I n July 2012, Dr. Shabbir Amanullah joined the Woodstock General Hospital, Ontario as Consultant Psychiatrist. He is the former Chief of Psychiatry, Prince Edward Island (PEI). Dr. Amanullah has received numerous awards including: Gold Medalist at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences, Bangalore, India; the Cyril Potter Gold Medal Winner- Division Of Psychiatry, Birmingham Medical Institute UK(2000) ; Physicians Physician Award at the QEH-PEI 2012 and the Award Of Excellence QEH, In 2012 he received a grant from the Canadian Medical Association (CMA) for research on physician health. He has actively participated on several committees and associations including the Royal College Regional Advisory Committee (RAC) 5 & 3; CPD Educator for Region 5; member of Council of College of Physicians and Surgeons of PEI; Vice President of Indo Canadian Association PEI and member of the Board of Directors of Cricket PEI. Dr. Amanullah was made a Fellow of the Canadian Psychiatric Association in September Dr. Amanullah has just published a paper on synthetic cannabinoids in agitation in dementia and the data analysis on the mindfulness for physicians studies was completed in Derek Puddester MD, MEd, FRCPC Dr. Derek Puddester is the Director of Physician Health at the Canadian Medical Association and provides support to the Canadian Physician Health Institute. He also is a clinical associate with the Ontario Medical Association's Physician Workplace Support Program. He is the Special Project Lead for Innovation/Evaluation in the Postgraduate Medical Education Office at uottawa where he is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry. Dr. Puddester specializes in paediatric telepsychiatry. Previously, he was the Director of the Behavioural Neurosciences and Consultation-Liaison team at the Children s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. He is also a certified executive coach and exclusively coaches physicians and other health care leaders. Dr. Puddester obtained his B.A., B. Med. Sc., and M.D. from Memorial University of Newfoundland. He completed a residency in Psychiatry at McMaster University, and a fellowship in child/adolescent psychiatry at University of Ottawa. In 2008, he completed a M. Ed. at uottawa. In 2011, he completed the Graduate Program in Executive Coaching at Royal Roads University. Dr. Puddester is the lead editor of the Royal College s CanMEDS Physician Health Guide and co-author of the RCPSC's Time Management Guide. He also produced Carpe Diem (a physician resiliency documentary), and was the project lead for ephysicianhealth.com and eworkplacehealth.com. 4 Suzan Schneeweiss MD, MEd, FRCPC Dr. Suzan Schneeweiss is an Associate Professor of Paediatrics, University of Toronto. She is a full-time faculty member and Director of Education for the Division of Paediatric Emergency Medicine at the Hospital for Sick Children. Dr. Schneeweiss is a graduate of the University of Toronto, Faculty of Medicine and completed her paediatric residency training and a clinical fellowship in neonatology at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. She received her Masters Degree of Health Professional Education at the Ontario Institute of Studies in Education, University of Toronto. She was recently appointed Academic Director for the Office of Continuing Education and Professional Development, University of Toronto. Dr. Schneeweiss has been working with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada as a Regional Continuing Professional Development Educator since In this role, she is working to enhance Fellows understanding of changes to the Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program and support life-long learning.
