1 Export or Import a MySQL Database in VPS with cpanel You can export a MySQL database and save it as a file on your computer. You can also import a database backup file to your MySQL server. Here are some common reasons you might want to export or import a database: to back up your database to prepare for a migration to restore a database from a backup to upload your website after a migration Access phpmyadmin First, you will need to access phpmyadmin for your VPS with cpanel server. Please click on the link for instructions: Manage Databases with phpmyadmin Required Information You will need the following information before you get started: The name of the database you want to export or import A database username that has access to this database The password for your database user If you need to create a new database or set up a new database user, please click on the article below: Create MySQL Database Export Instructions 1. Log into phpmyadmin. 2. Click on your database from the list on the left. page 1 / 5

2 3. Click Export from the row of tabs. 4. Under Export Method, click Custom - display all possible options. 5. Under Table(s), click Select All to make sure all of your tables are highlighted. 6. Under Format-specific options, make sure structure and data is selected. 7. In Object creation options, check Add DROP TABLE / VIEW / PROCEDURE / FUNCTION / EVENT statement. 8. Leave all other settings at default. 9. At the bottom of the page, click Go. page 2 / 5

3 10. You will be prompted to save a file on your computer. Once you do, the backup will be created and saved. It may take several minutes, depending on the size of the database. You're all set! You can keep the backup and re-import it at any time to restore your database, on this server or any other MySQL server. Note: The Add DROP TABLE selection means that your backup will produce a clean overwrite if it is ever imported on top of a different version of the database. If you prefer to create a backup that will merge with future changes, leave this option unselected. In fact, you should be able to use the Quick option in Step 4, and then just click Go. Export with SSH You can also export your database using the command line. This can be useful if your database is too large to export through phpmyadmin. This method is recommended for users with some familiarity using a command line. 1. Log into your server with SSH. 2. Navigate to the folder where you wish to create the backup. 3. Run the following command: mysqldump --add-drop-table -u username -p databasename > backup.sql username should be replaced with your database username. databasename should be replaced with the name of your database, such as admin_database. backup.sql should be replaced with the name for your backup file. It can be anything you want. 4. You will be prompted for your database password. This should be the password associated with the database user you entered. 5. The command will take a few minutes to run, depending on the size of your database. When it's done, you will be returned to the command prompt. You can download your backup file via FTP and save it on your computer or elsewhere. Note: See the note about Add DROP TABLE in the previous section. If you don't want to include it, leave out the --add-drop-table flag. Tip: If you are logged into SSH as root, you may be able to omit the login credentials from the MySQL command. In that case, you could just type mysqldump --add-drop-table databasename > backup.sql. Import Instructions 1. Log into phpmyadmin. 2. Click on your database from the list on the left. Caution: If you import over a database with existing content, it will be overwritten. page 3 / 5

That's it! Your new database has been uploaded to the server. Import with SSH You can also import your database using the command line. This can be useful if your database is too large to import through phpmyadmin. This method is recommended for users with some familiarity using a command line. 1. Upload your database backup file to your server, and make a note of the location. 2. Log into your server with SSH. 3. Navigate to the folder where you uploaded the backup file. 4. Run the following command: mysql -u username -p databasename < backup.sql username should be replaced with your database username. databasename should be replaced with the name of your database, such as admin_database. backup.sql should be replaced with the name of your backup file. Alternate command: mysql -u username -p databasename -e 'source backup.sql' 5. You will be prompted for your database password. This should be the password associated with the database user you entered. 6. The command will take a few minutes to run, depending on the size of your database. When it's done, you will be returned to the command prompt. Your new database should now be live on your server. Tip: If you are logged into SSH as root, you may be able to omit the login credentials from the MySQL command. In that case, you could just type mysql databasename < backup.sql. page 5 / 5
