SECTION 1 General Description The elevator side-mount assembly provides a method of mounting the standard moisture sensor of the Yield Monitor 2000 or PF3000 Precision Farming System, which does not require removing flighting from the grain tank loading auger. It can also be used to replace the horizontal auger kit on some combines to provide even grain tank loading. Two holes are cut in the side of the clean grain elevator. One to allow grain to fall out of the elevator where the paddles are lifting grain, and another to allow grain to fall back into the elevator where the chain is going down empty. Since only a small percent of the grain carried by the elevator passes through the sidemount assembly, foreign material will not build up on the moisture sensor as quickly as when it is mounted in the upper auger. The reduced grain flow will also prevent wearing out the moisture sensor s plastic housing, or cable damage from wet grain pulling on it, which can occur when it is mounted in the upper auger. The V-shape of the side-mount housing prevents grain from falling freely through the assembly, since the cavity around the moisture sensor must remain full of grain to obtain accurate readings. The side-mount assembly contains a proximity switch, which senses the level of grain above the moisture sensor and activates a relay, which operates a small electric motor driven auger, which lifts grain from below the moisture sensor to the outlet hole. When the level of grain above the moisture sensor drops sufficiently, the switch and relay turn the motor off, leaving the grain level above the moisture sensing area. A cleanout button is provided on the side-mount assembly to operate the auger manually to clean out most of the grain from the assembly. Cleanout is recommended to prevent wet grain from spoiling in the sensor assembly if the combine is not going to be operated again soon. The auger cavity also has a quick-release bottom cover to allow complete cleanout, such as at the end of the harvest season, or if extremely dirty grain conditions have been encountered. The moisture sensing unit mounts in a quick-release cover which attaches to the side of the side-mount assembly with a single wing nut. This allows quick removal of the moisture sensor for inspection or cleaning. Power for the motor of the side-mount assembly comes directly from the combine battery, and not from the yield monitor. Thus, operation of the side mount assembly s motor control circuit is completely independent of the yield monitor. Page 2 Rev

Ag Leader Technology has cover plates for the holes in the elevator. These are available for purchase if removal of the elevator mount unit is necessary. Warning When cleaning or inspecting the moisture sensor, keep fingers out of the auger cavity. Since the motor circuit is always powered from the combine battery, the auger will operate if grain, your fingers or a metal tool come near the proximity switch mounted above the moisture sensor cavity. Do not put fuses greater that 5 Amp in the Fuse Holder at the Side-Mount Relay. Fuses larger than 5 Amp could damage the motor Page 3 Rev

SECTION 3 Installation of Housing Assembly For combines intended for harvesting rice or grass seed, the Spacer Block needs to have the larger cut. This should be done from the factory if ordered correctly. To make sure follow the instructions in section five. The Elevator Side-Mount Moisture Sensor comes assembled as on the side of the elevator. Remove the electrical cover that encloses the relay, proximity switch, and wiring. Remove the 1 thick spacer block from the metal housing to serve as a template for positioning and marking. 1. Locate Mounting Position The moisture sensor assembly will be mounted on the outside of the clean grain on the right side of the machine. The exceptions to this are the New Holland, Gleaner and Case-IH 80 and 88 size machines. Combine specifics on location and general install notes are found in section four. Hold the spacer block and sensor assembly against the side of the clean grain elevator to check for proper clearance from belts, pulleys, shields, etc. The sensor assembly should be installed as high on the elevator as possible to keep the assembly protected from flying mud, chaff, and debris. All installation pictures in this section are for the right hand mounting of the elevator mount moisture sensor. For mounting in the grain tank or backside of elevator (left-hand) pictures will be mirror images. Figure 1. Position of Cutout holes Page 5 Rev

2. Mark Holes and Cutouts Remove the spacer block from the elevator. Using the marker and a straight-edge, carefully extend the outline of the inlet hole downward to make it 8 inches long from top to bottom. Note that the 8-inch tall hole will match the cavity on the back of the spacer block. The five-sided hole should also match the larger side of the opening on the backside of the spacer block. Also refer to Figure 1 which shows the inlet and outlet outlines. Note: This is very important to obtain good response from the moisture sensor. If you only cut a hole that matches the small 2 inch high opening that goes completely through the spacer block, grain will not have enough time to fall out of the elevator as it is traveling upward at about 7 feet per second on the chain paddles. 3. Drill Holes and Saw Cut-outs Drill Holes and Drill ½ inch diameter holes in all corners of the inlet and outlet holes, and drill 9/32 inch holes on the five points you marked with the drill bit. Using a metal saw or cutting disk, cut out the inlet and outlet holes. Cut just to the inside of your marked lines. Take care not to go outside the lines, to prevent grain from leaking around the holes. File the edges of the holes to remove sharp edges that may wear chain paddles or prevent clean mounting. 4. Install Mounting Bolts and Nuts Put one star lockwasher on each of the ¼-20 x 1¾ bolts. Insert the bolts through the 9/32 holes in the elevator from the inside out and install and tighten one regular ¼ nut on each to prevent the bolts from falling back in the elevator. Page 6 Rev

Figure 2: Holes Cut and Bolts Installed 5. Install Spacer Block Slide the plastic spacer onto the five bolts. If it does not fit easily, loosen and reposition the bolts by starting them in the spacer block and then re-tightening the nuts. Figure 3: Spacer Block Installed Page 7 Rev

6. Assemble Sensor Housing to Spacer Block Slide the housing assembly over the mounting bolts on top of the spacer block. Install Nylock nuts on the five mounting bolts. Install the four ¼ x ¾ sheet metal screws in the remaining holes by threading them directly into the plastic spacer block. Power Cable Installation Figure 4: Completed Sensor Mounting 1. Connect the lugs of the power cable to the terminals of the combine batteries. Make sure that the red fused wire goes to the positive terminal of the battery, and the black unfused wire goes to the negative terminal. Check for 12-volt nominal power across the two terminals that you are connecting to. 2. Route the power cable to the sensor assembly, making sure that the cable will not be able to come into contact with any belts, chains, or moving parts. 3. Plug the power cable into the moisture sensor assembly. 4. To make sure you have a correct connection, press the cleanout button on the moisture sensor assembly. You should hear the motor run. Also, look at the bottom end of the shaft and verify that the auger is turning the correct direction such that it will carry grain up to the outlet hole. 5. If the motor runs and is turning the right direction, secure the power cable to the combine at 18 intervals with the cable ties that are provided. Be sure that moving parts cannot damage the cable. Page 8 Rev

Moisture Sensor Installation 1. Remove one of the sheet metal screws that attaches the aluminum plate on the moisture to the plastic housing of the moisture sensor, and install the terminal on the ground strap of the moisture sensor on this screw (see Figure 5). Tape the ground strap against the large flat side of the aluminum plate to hold it in position during the following steps. Attached Ground Strap Figure 5: Moisture Sensor Cover Installation 2. Feed the moisture sensor cable through the hole in the top of the moisture sensor holder from the enclosed side out (see Figure 5). 3. Slip the aluminum housing of the moisture sensor into the holder until the four holes in the aluminum housing line up with the four holes in the holder. Install the four #8 x 3/8 self-tapping screws through the holes in the moisture sensor holder into the aluminum plate. 4. Install the moisture sensor onto the side-mount housing by engaging the tab on the bottom of the moisture sensor holder with the tab on the side of the main housing, tilting the sensor upward to insert the sensor blade into the grain cavity, and securing the holder with the wing nut provided. 5. Route the moisture sensor cable to the yield monitor distribution cable on the right side of the cab. Find a path that keeps the cable away from moving parts. If possible, follow existing wiring harnesses, hoses or tubes. 6. Secure the moisture sensor cable to the combine at approximately 18-inch intervals with cable ties. Be sure to leave enough slack at the moisture sensor end to allow removing the moisture sensor in its holder from the main side-mount housing. Coil and tie any excess cable length hear the distribution cable, or at any safe position along the cable s path. Page 9 Rev

SECTION 4 Special Instructions for Specific Combine Models John Deere All 9000, 10 Series and 50 Series Machines should be using the design which fits the factory (Greenstar) holes. JD Combines: This version can be used on these combines by simply following the instructions in Section 3. If you are installing the elevator mount on a 9000 machine with Greenstar holes, remove top cover plate on the side of the elevator and place the spacer block over this opening. Push the elevator block as high as it will fit on the elevator. In this position, the inlet hole for the Ag Leader moisture sensor will extend upward from the factory opening in the elevator. There will a portion of the existing hole exposed on the rear side of the spacer block. To cover this opening, place the spacer block temporarily on the mounting bolts, position the 8-inch metal cover plate will be needed (P.N ) to cover the remaining opening and mark the holes for drilling on each end of the cover. Remove the spacer block and install the cover on the elevator with the ¼-20 x ½ round head screws and nuts. These parts will need to be ordered special from Ag Leader Technology. JD Combines: Place the spacer block on the clean-grain elevator as high up as possible. The channel through the center of the spacer block will provide clearance for the center-divider flange on the elevator. Position the spacer block as far forward toward the front of the machine as the center divider will allow. Carefully mark the holes to be drilled or cut on the side of the elevator with the drill bit and marker. For some 7720 models the fuel tank extends beyond the side of the elevator and may create clearance problems for removing the moisture sensor. For these machines, it is critical to position the spacer block so that the top-most hole to be drilled is just under the side shield. If the Side-Mount is positioned too low, it may not be possible to remove the moisture sensor for inspection. If removing the sensor still is not possible, the elbow must be removed, and a different method used for clamping and sealing the cable. This modification must be made by Ag Leader Technology. JD : These machines have a narrow elevator that does not allow the mounting bolts and elevator cutouts to be located on the width of the elevator. A black extension bracket is supplied to provide mounting holes for the rear-most mounting bolts. This bracket, when mounted to the backside of the elevator with the two button-head screws and nuts and flush with the side of the elevator for mounting, provides and additional ¾ with to the elevator. Figure 7 shows a narrow elevator (Case) with an extension bracket. Page 10 Rev

Case-IH Combines Case , & : Access the full length of the clean-grain elevator on the right side of the machine. Position the spacer block on the side of the elevator above heavy reinforcement and below the bottom edge of the side-shield. The sensor should be clear any moving chains, belts, and etc. on the machine. Position the spacer so the left edge is flush with the rear side of the elevator. Case1480, , 2188 & 2388: The mounting location is in the grain tank on these combines, therefore a reversed elevator side-mount unit is required. Make sure the combine is shut off, and then climb into the grain tank. Push the block up against the reinforced top housing lip and make sure the right side of block is flush with the rear edge of the elevator (see Figure 6). Figure 6. Position of Spacer Block inside the Grain Tank (1480 Shown) Case 1440 & 1460: These machines have a narrow elevator that does not allow enough width for the standard mounting locations. An extension bracket kit is supplied to provide the necessary mounting holes for the rear-most mounting bolts. The bracket mounts on the rear side of the elevator with the two button-head screws and nuts. The bracket needs to be flush with the side of the elevator so that the spacer block can lie flat on the elevator (see Figure 7). This provides an additional ¾ width to the elevator. Place the block over the bracket using the two holes in the bracket for two of the five mounting holes as shown in the figure. The remaining three holes will need to be drilled in the elevator for mounting the elevator mount. Page 11 Rev

Extension Bracket Figure 7. Mounting location for narrow elevator (1460 shown) Case 1420 & 1620: The mounting location is in the grain tank on these combines, therefore a reversed elevator side-mount unit is required. These machines have a narrow elevator that does not allow enough width for the mounting bolts and elevator cutouts to be located on the elevator. An extension bracket kit is supplied to provide mounting holes for the rearmost mounting bolts. The bracket mounts to the rear side of the elevator with two button-head screws and nuts, flush with the side of the elevator for mounting the spacer block. This provides an additional ¾ width to the elevator. Place the block over the bracket using the two holes in the bracket for two of the five mounting holes similar to the right hand installation. The remaining three holes will need to be drilled in the elevator for mounting the elevator mount unit. Massey & Class Claas, MF 8450 and MF 8460 mounting is between elevator and separator wall. MF 8680 refer to Gleaner R62. All other Massey s use right hand unit on the outside of the clean grain elevator. New Holland TR Combines All TR 89 and 99 combines after 1999 have factory holes for the elevator mount unit. For these machines remove the cover plate and install the elevator mount unit. On these combines, the sensor assembly is mounted on the inside of the elevator just above the auger tube coming out of the separator. The bottom of the spacer block will actually hang over the lip of the angle iron flange at the bottom of the elevator. The shield covering the fan drive must be notched to accommodate the sensor assembly. Page 12 Rev

These dimensions below were obtained on a TR98. Some models may require different dimensions, so hold the sensor assembly up to the elevator to see how much interference exists and notch accordingly. Note: About ½ of space is required to the inside of the removable cover on the sensor assembly which covers the electrical wiring, so that this cover can be removed if the electrical components need to be serviced. Back Side of Clean Grain Elevator Left Edge of Notch in Shield Tailings Lower Auger Tube Figure 8: Sensor Assembly on inside of TR-98 elevator. Once the notch is cut in the shield, and the holes are cut and drilled in the elevator, install the ¼-20 x 1¾ bolts as described above, but do not tighten the nuts. They need to be left loose to allow the spacer block to slide onto the bolts. After the spacer is on the bolts, tighten the nuts. Install the housing assembly over the spacer. If you cannot get the housing assembly to fit over the bolts without the motor hitting the fan shield, then the motor will have to be temporarily removed to allow assembly. To do this, remove the motor assembly by taking out the three bolts. Do not remove the auger drive from the metal cover. The auger drive is locktighted, and will be hard to replace. After the main housing is on the five bolts on the elevator, replace the three bolts to the motor cover. Page 13 Rev

Gleaner Combines R40-R50, R42-72, C62 and MF8680 Combines: Access the full length of the clean-grain elevator on the right side of the machine. Position the spacer on the left side of the clean grain elevator towards the inside of the combine between elevator and frame (see Figure 9). The elevator mount unit should be mounted above the reinforcement piece that is mounted to the elevator. Figure 9. Position of Spacer Block N5-N7, R5-R7 and R60-R70 Combines: Access the full length of the clean-grain elevator on the right side of the machine. Position the spacer block on the outside of the elevator as high as possible and just below the side shield (see Figure 10). 15 Special Instructions for Combines Intended For Harvesting Rice or Grass Seed For combines intended for use in rice or grass seed, the block has been modified at the factory to have a larger outlet hole. Please verify that the outlet hole on the plastic spacer block looks like the figure on the right. Remove the ¼ thick wall if it has not been done already. The larger hole provides less restriction to grain being pushed up by the metering auger. If you do not intend to harvest rice or grass seed, do NOT remove this area. ¼ Thick Wall Unmodified Block Modified Block Page 15 Rev
