3 How to apply to Arizona State University ASU has its own application for admission that can be accessed using asu.edu/ugapp. An international student is defined as a student on a J-1 or F-1 visa who is not one of the following: a citizen of the U.S. a permanent resident of the U.S. a refugee in the U.S. The online application will request the student s personal, visa, contact and academic information. Be aware that the following information about the student will be needed: Demographic information: 1. Student s full name as it appears on his or her passport 2. Date of birth as it appears on passport 3. Home address and mailing address (not a P.O. Box) 4. Preferred phone and address 5. Full names of parents 6. Preferred address for parents 7. Highest level of education of parents 8. Country of student s birth 9. Country of student s citizenship 10. Type of visa that will be used to enter the U.S. Academic information: 1. Last or current academic level 2. List of all postsecondary institutions attended 3. High school courses can be added, if desired (not required) 4. Preferred degree (select Undergraduate Program) 5. Desired academic degree programs (first choice and second choice) 6. Desired academic term (fall, spring or summer) and year Submit the nonrefundable application fee. The application fee is $85 (U.S. Dollars) and can be paid at the end of the online application. This payment can be made using any credit or debit card that can be used for international payments. Note that application fees cannot be waived, refunded or transferred to a future application. 3 Learn to thrive

4 Required documents Academic records Records must include all courses completed, grades or marks earned, and certificates or degrees awarded. Official transcripts for the last three years of high school must be provided. If the student has completed any postsecondary courses, college and university transcripts must be sent to ASU. Certified copies will be accepted if they are stamped as true copies of the original from one of the following: 1. Embassy or government education representative 2. Registrar or academic official from the institution attended 3. A recognized international educational organization (IIE, USEF, etc.) Transcripts not issued in English must be accompanied by an official English translation. Note that all documents received by ASU become property of ASU and will not be returned. All official documents must be mailed by courier to ASU following these instructions: Address: Arizona State University International Undergraduate Admissions Student Services Building 1151 S Forest Ave Tempe AZ Make sure the student s ASU ID number is clearly written on the envelope below ASU s address. The ASU ID number is the 10-digit number provided to the student after the application is submitted. 2. If the student has been enrolled in a U.S. institution, request that the official transcript be sent directly from the school(s) to International Admission Services using the address above. Upon graduation or completion of the semester, request that a final official transcript be sent directly to ASU to determine final admission status. Evidence of English language proficiency Exams accepted: TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) Must be submitted electronically to ASU from ETS (Educational Testing Service) ASU s institution code: 4007 toefl.org IELTS (International English Language Testing System) Both originals and photocopies are accepted ielts.org PTE (Pearson Test of English) Must be submitted electronically through Pearson pearsonpte.com Exceptions to the English language proficiency requirement: Applicants who completed their junior and senior years in a U.S. high school with SAT Verbal Score of 550 (old SAT) or 600 Evidence Based Reading/Writing (new SAT) or ACT English score of 23 Applicants who completed four years of high school in a U.S. high school (These applicants are subject to high school competency academic requirements.) Applicants who successfully completed the Advanced 2 level of Global Launch Intensive English Program with a grade of B or higher 4 Learn to thrive

5 ASU academic admission requirements All students must meet the general university requirements for admission. Note: Some programs at ASU have additional or higher requirements for admission. General freshman admission requirement 3.00 grade point average (GPA) or better Comparable to an average score of 80 percent (3.00 is a B, where A = 4.00) College-specific admission requirements W. P. Carey School of Business Bachelor of Science degrees Freshmen must meet ONE of the following requirements: 3.60 GPA Comparable to an average score of 85 percent (3.60 is an A-, where A = 4.00) SAT Reasoning score of 1160 (prior to March 2016) or 1230 (March 2016 and later) ACT score of 25 Graduated in the top 8 percent of high school class Bachelor of Arts degrees Freshmen must meet the general admission requirement (3.00 GPA or better) Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering The following program has higher admission requirements Software Engineering, BS freshmen must meet ONE of the following requirements: 3.00 GPA Comparable to an average score of 80 percent (3.60 is an A-, where A = 4.00) SAT Reasoning score of 1140 (prior to March 2016) or 1210 (March 2016 and later) ACT score of 24 Graduated in the top 25 percent of high school class Freshmen in the following programs must meet general admission requirements (3.00 GPA or better) Automotive Systems, BSE Electrical Systems, BSE Environmental and Resource Management, BS Humanitarian Engineering, BSE Human Systems Engineering, BS Information Technology, BS Manufacturing Engineering, BS Mechanical Engineering Systems, BSE Robotics, BSE SAT and ACT Scores These test scores are not required for general admission to ASU. Some programs (business, for example) do require these exams. For more details on each degree, see the degree search site at asu.edu/degrees. 5 Learn to thrive

6 Conditional admission ASU may offer conditional undergraduate admission to international applicants who meet the academic requirements but do not meet the minimum English language proficiency for their major. Through conditional admission, students must first provide proof of English language proficiency as stated above before being allowed to enroll in ASU university courses. Students that are conditionally admitted will be granted up to three semesters to complete this requirement through one of the tests previously mentioned or by successfully completing the Advanced English level 2 at ASU s Global Launch Intensive English Program with a grade of B or higher. Some majors in colleges and schools at ASU have higher English language proficiency requirements, such as in the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering, Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, and College of Nursing and Health Innovation. Notice: ASU reserves the right to independently test any student s English language proficiency upon arrival, including those who have earned scores satisfying minimum admission criteria. ASU may require support classes if the demonstrated level of English language proficiency is not sufficient for academic success. 6 Learn to thrive

7 Scholarships ASU offers a limited number of merit-based scholarships to highly qualified international freshman students who are nonimmigrant, nonresident and degree-seeking. This program provides qualified students monetary awards and an environment focusing on knowledge, learning, and research plus resources toward understanding and helping solve society s most pressing challenges. To be considered for this competitive scholarship, students must submit their applications for admission to ASU by April 1, There is no separate scholarship application to complete. Awards range from $3,000 to $8,000 per academic year. Students must be on F-1 visas and have a highly competitive GPA to be eligible for this scholarship. 7 Learn to thrive

8 Grades and records The U.S. federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (also called FERPA or the Buckley Amendment) grants students certain privacy rights regarding their education records. In order to share information with other individuals, students are required to provide guest access to their records under FERPA. Information may not be released to anyone without the consent of the student. For more information regarding FERPA, please visit students.asu.edu/policies/ferpa. Students can grant guests access by going to My ASU and completing the steps outlined at students.asu.edu/parent-guest-access.
