1 Spring 009 Introduction to the Humanities INSTRUCTOR: Ms. Swenson, T-, MW -, F -, COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course introduces the student to the variety of media and themes depicting universal human experiences presented in the humanities (painting, sculpture, architecture, theater, music, dance, and film. This course meets the General Education Requirement for either Arts or Humanities. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES: Identify the main themes in arts that are found in various global cultures. Identify the main stylistic and formal components of the visual and performing art in various global cultures. Differentiate and analyze the reasons why cultures have created works of art. Interpret, analyze and evaluate various major monuments of the visual and performing arts from various global cultures. Apply their knowledge of the arts of different cultures to compare and contrast monuments from two different cultures. REQUIRED TEXT: The Arts~World Themes, Geraldine Nagle, (Brown & Benchmark, 99) ISBN: , available as a rental from the Taft College Library or for purchase from several on-line bookstores. ATTENDANCE: Mandatory. Excessive absences will jeopardize your enrollment in this class. CELL PHONE and other electronic devices POLICY: All cell phones, ipods, laptops, must be turned off during class. FIELDTRIPS: You must attend one of the scheduled fieldtrips. Dates and locations will be announced in the next week. QUIZ: This objective and short essay answer quiz is worth 00 points. You are expected to take this quiz without any help from any other student or source than the Syllabus for this course. The quiz has two essay questions, and one of those will ask you to establish learning objectives. Your personal learning objectives may be about the course content or study skills. Read the Syllabus and Assignments before you attempt this quiz. 00 pts

2 EXAMS: You will have five () exams of equal length and weight. Those will be administered on-line and you will have an hour to take the exam. You must work independently on this exam. There will be objective and essay format questions which will require you to apply your knowledge gained from the assigned readings in the text. The essay questions are to be answered in your own words. At least one essay question on the Final Exam (Exam ) will be comprehensive. You may use your notes from reading the chapter as a reference while you take the exam, but that is all. Please note that if you are taking the exams on line, there will be a window of a week when the exam is available to you to enter, BUT you are only allowed to enter once and you must take and submit exam at that time. You will have 60 minutes to complete the exam, so work quickly and do not exit that exam. This is closely monitored (proctored by the computer) with strict parameters. Your score is not final until the essay questions are graded, and that might be several days after you complete the exam. Chapters are listed below 00 points per exam. DUE: May Once it is graded, your score will be found in the Assignment" area, comments may be read at the turnitin.com site. The topic will be a cross-cultural Comparison and Contrast of two monuments or objects. More specific directions are found at the Assignment link. Length: -6 pages (0 to 00 words) PLUS appropriate citations and bibliography. More specific instructions are in the ASSIGNMENTS. 00 points POSTINGS: These will be done either individually or in a group activity. The groups will divide the work, and designate one student to present to the class on the due date. All participants will receive the same grade. At Assignment area (on the left side of the screen) you will find different assignments. Those assignments will have a number of different articles on topics related to the topics of the current chapters. Read all of them, then respond to the one which interest you. The dues dates are listed with the Assignments. The topics are recent or current periodicals (New York Times, Art Journal, etc.), videos, films or books. 00 points DUE DATES and LATE WORK POLICY: The due dates are as posted. The due date has a built in grace period of one week, regardless of campus holidays or Spring

3 Break. Work submitted late but within the grace period will be marked late, but no points will be deducted for being late. Only extraordinary circumstances documented by hospital admission forms or similar paperwork would merit more time to complete an assignment or exam, and should that happen points will be deducted for lateness. These will be due every weeks. WITHDRAWALS: Should a student decide to not complete the course, they are responsible for contacting the Counseling Center to process the appropriate paperwork. The last day to withdraw with a W is March 0 ACADEMIC HONESTY: Please read the Academic Honesty and Standards of Student Conduct sections of the catalog. Consulting online sources while taking an exam is cheating and will result in a 0. Plagiarism from the text or any other published or student source will not be tolerated and will result in a 0. ABSOLUTE LAST DATE TO SUBMIT WORK: May th. No exceptions. COURSE GRADE: The final course grade will be the average of the points earned on the quiz, exams, research paper, and postings assignments.
