1 Healthy Pregnancy Mini-Session Overview: This mini-session is intended to help pregnant women make healthy decisions through proper nutrition and lifestyle choices. Target Audience: Pregnant women Group Size: Individuals Needed Time: 15 minutes Behavioral Objectives: After the session participants will be able to: Identify behaviors to engage in, limit, and avoid during pregnancy. Choose foods to eat that will provide extra calcium, protein, and iron in their diet. Key Messages: Talk to your healthcare provider if you have questions or concerns about your pregnancy. Gaining the right amount of weight and being active is important for a healthy pregnancy. Eating a variety of foods is an important part of a healthy diet. Know which foods and behaviors to avoid during pregnancy. Materials Needed: MyPlate folder Handouts for participants: o Where Does the Weight Go? (print off, make copies) o Stoplight Behaviors (print off, make copies) o Duplicate copy goal sheet (order from ISU Extension and Outreach state office) Pencils or pens for each person Outline of 15 minute session: Welcome, goal checkup, and introduction to Healthy Pregnancy (2 minutes) Discussion (5 minutes) Activity Stoplight Behaviors (5 minutes) Sum up and home activity (3 minutes) 1

2 See More Resources at the end of the lesson. WELCOME TO Healthy Pregnancy: Welcome to Loving Your Family Feeding Their Future. This program is brought to you by the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education and Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. Please make your own nametag (first names only). Make sure the participant has a MyPlate folder, a copy of the Where Does the Weight Go? handout, the Stoplight Behaviors handout, and a pencil. GOAL CHECKUP: How did you do on the goal you set? BEGIN: Pregnancy is a very special time in your life. Your body is changing in order to take care of your baby. Everything you do and eat affects how the baby grows and how the baby s brain develops. What are some changes you have made since becoming pregnant? CONTINUE: Today we will be talking about: Making healthy choices that are important for both mom and baby during pregnancy. Identifying behaviors to engage in, to limit and to avoid during pregnancy. Talking to your healthcare provider about questions and concerns you have during pregnancy. DISCUSSION: How much weight have you heard you should gain during pregnancy? Gaining weight during pregnancy is natural and normal. The amount of weight you need to gain is based on your weight and height before pregnancy, but pregnancy is never a time to lose weight. The recommended weight gain during pregnancy for most women is pounds. Two to five pounds during the first three months, then one pound per week for the following six months. This weight gain is needed to support the growing baby and keep the mother healthy. Be sure to talk to your healthcare provider about the amount of weight you should gain. The Where Does the Weight Go? handout shows where the pound weight gain goes during pregnancy. Write in the amount of recommended weight gain for each area as I read them off. Baby: 7 7 ½ pounds is considered a healthy baby. Placenta: 1 2 pounds, this is attached to the uterus to supply the baby with nutrients and oxygen from the mother. 2

3 Uterus: 2 pounds, this is where the baby grows so it needs to increase in size as the baby grows. It grows a lot toward the end of pregnancy because the muscle cells are increasing to support the baby and upcoming delivery. Amniotic fluid: 2 pounds, this is the fluid around the baby that forms during pregnancy to provide protection for the baby. Breasts: 1 pound, the added growth of the breasts during pregnancy is tissue for milk production. Blood and body fluids: 3 6 ½ pounds, more blood is needed during pregnancy because this is how the mother transfers her nutrients and oxygen to the baby. Additional body fluids are primarily water. Pregnant women hold more water in the body. Additional muscles and fat: 9 14 pounds, calorie needs increase for the mom and baby. The fat provides calories for the baby and muscles help support the mother s and baby s growth. CONTINUE: You do not need just calories for your baby, but you need good nutrients for the unborn baby s growth and development. Starting the 4 th month of pregnancy, you need about 300 additional calories a day. This is not much. During pregnancy your body needs extra: o Calcium to build strong bones milk products and calcium fortified juice. o Protein for your baby s growth meats, eggs, cheese, milk, nuts, beans. o Folate (folic acid) to prevent birth defects most breads and cereals are fortified with folic acid. o Zinc for brain development red meat and seafood, some breads and cereals are fortified with zinc. o Iron for healthy blood red meat. Eating a variety of foods from all food groups will help you get the vitamins, minerals and nutrients you and your baby need during pregnancy. Along with eating healthy, being physically active is good for most pregnant women and their baby. ACTIVITY: Stoplight Behaviors Making decisions about certain behaviors during pregnancy is important. Let s think of a stoplight to remind us which behaviors we should do, which ones should be done with caution and which ones should be avoided during pregnancy. Use the Stoplight Behaviors worksheet to determine whether the graphic represents a green, yellow or red stoplight behavior. On the Stoplight Behaviors handout, star green light behaviors, circle yellow light behaviors, and put an x through red light behaviors as we discuss them. Green light behaviors are behaviors that are good to do during pregnancy. There are a lot of things you can do that are good for you and your baby these are green light behaviors. 3

4 Seeing a healthcare provider regularly. Choosing a variety of healthy foods. Gaining the appropriate amount of weight. Being physically active. Taking prenatal vitamins. Yellow light behaviors are behaviors to do with caution during pregnancy. These may be green light or red light behaviors. Talk to your healthcare provider about any yellow light behaviors that you do or are thinking about doing. Caffeine based on recent guidelines, caffeine consumption for pregnant women has been reduced to 200 milligrams (about equal to a 12 ounce cup of coffee). Over the counter drugs like pain relievers and cold medicines or prescription drugs. Talk to your health care provider and read all warning labels carefully. Herbs and herbal teas some should be avoided because they can cause birth defects or premature delivery. Vitamins and minerals talk to your healthcare provider before taking anything other than your prenatal vitamin. Red light behaviors are behaviors to avoid while pregnant. They may cause your baby to be born too small or prematurely and increase birth defects. Smoking and breathing in secondhand smoke decrease the amount of oxygen getting to the baby; can cause the baby to be born too small. Alcohol drinking any amount during pregnancy may cause certain birth defects. Street drugs no amount is safe, may decrease the amount of oxygen getting to the baby, cause birth defects, and may cause the baby to be born addicted. SUM UP: Weight gain during pregnancy is normal and needed to support the growing baby and keep the mother healthy. Eating a variety of foods from all the food groups will help you get the nutrients you and your baby need during pregnancy. Making decisions about certain behaviors during pregnancy is important. Some should be done because they are good for mom and baby, some should be done with caution, asking your healthcare provider first, and some should be avoided because they put the unborn baby at risk for low birth weight, premature birth, and/or birth defects. HOME ACTIVITY: What food that is healthy for you and your baby do you want to eat more of? What change do you want to make that will be healthy for you and your baby? Give the participant a duplicate sheet to record the goals. Encourage the participants to post the white sheet on their refrigerators to be reminded of the goal during the next week. Educator should keep the yellow sheet and attach to the participant s lesson/date sheet. You can keep your handouts in your MyPlate folder. Please bring this folder to each lesson. 4
