1 THE HOARE FAMILY OF BARTON STACEY FROM 1890 by Linda Moffatt April 2013 If you are able to add any more information to this account, please contact the Barton Stacey Parish Local History Group at GEORGE HOARE was a shepherd of Fosbury, Wiltshire, born there around He married Hannah (surname not known) and one of their sons, John Hoare, married a young Barton Stacey girl and settled at the cottage now known as Chalk Dell, Barton Stacey. JOHN THOMAS HOARE, the first with his name to live in Barton Stacey, was born in 1866 in Fosbury and baptised 23 December 1866 at Tidcombe, Wiltshire, a son of George and Hannah Hoare. He, along with his father and brothers, was a farm worker in Oxenwood, Wiltshire. In 1890 he married Emma Ralph, born about 1869, the daughter of Charles Ralph of Barton Stacey, and his wife Hannah. Hannah Ralph married secondly Edward Banting in Their first child, Tom Ernest Hoare, was born in 1890 in Barton Stacey. John and Emma Hoare were living at the time of the census of 1891 with John's widowed father George Hoare in his cottage on Fosbury Road, Tidcombe, Wiltshire. This was perhaps owing to George Hoare's ill-health or infirmity, since he appears to have moved with them soon after to Barton Stacey. The death of George Hoare at the age of 76 was registered at Andover in (Births, deaths and marriages of Barton Stacey folk were registered at Andover). John and Emma lived during the 1890s in Barton Stacey. The house now called Chalk Dell was definitely their home from 1900 and was where they raised their eight children. The lives of the Hoare family in Barton Stacey remained closely linked to Chalk Dell and it is worth digressing at this point to look at the changes in ownership of this property. At the time that John and Emma Hoare were married in 1890 the owner of Chalk Dell was Caleb Brickwood, a shoemaker, who with his parents William and Diana Brickwood before him, had lived there since At the time the census was taken in 1891, Caleb had moved into one of the Plough Inn cottages (his son-in-law ran the Plough Inn at this time). Caleb died on 24 June 1899 and on 9 May 1900 his executors sold Chalk Dell to William Tovey, a shoemaker of Longparish, for 50. William Tovey let Chalk Dell to John Hoare in It is possible they had rented it from Caleb Brickwood in the 1890s but we have no proof of this. The property passed on the death of William Tovey in 1913 to his wife Maria Georgina Tovey who died on 7 February Her executors agreed to sell the property to the then occupier Emma Hoare the wife of John Hoare on 8 September 1936, for 110. On that same day and for the same sum Emma Hoare sold it on to Annie Long, a spinster from Whitchurch (of Long's jam factory there, for whom Gertrude worked for many years). Annie Long then owned Chalk Dell for 21 years when she sold it to Nancy Betty Doris Compton, John Hoare's granddaughter, on 31 July 1957 for 150. Mrs Compton may have been the owner of Chalk Dell for the longest time, as after 34 years she sold it to Mr & Mrs Portsmouth in census, piece 1254, folio 10; 1881 census, piece 1273, folio 108; 1891 census, piece 972, folio 7. 2 John Hoare was called an agricultural labourer in the 1901 census but had become a gamekeeper by This photograph, of unknown date, was kindly provided by his grandson Michael Hoare. He died in Winchester Hospital on 28th December 1915 from septicaemia caused by an untreated tooth abscess. Emma Hoare died in 1951 at the age of 82. Leslie Arthur, born He served with G Troop, 239 Battery of 44 Light Anti-Aircraft Unit. Commanded by Major J. C. Worcester, the Battery guarded many important areas from German air attack, including Portland Naval Docks and Corsham (Box tunnel). When prime minister Winston Churchill was at Chequers, 239 Battery placed guns on the lawns. Having left England on 26 May 1942 aboard HMT Cathay, they arrived in India on July 17 having stayed three days in Cape Town. Various duties were performed in Delhi and Calcutta before, on 15 December 1942, now under the command of 14th Indian Infantry Division, 239 Battery moved into the Chittagong area as part of Sir Archibald Wavell's first Arakan offensive to stop the Japanese advance through Burma to India. G Troop found themselves near Kodingauk, north of Donbaik, supporting 130 Field Regiment, which had been under enemy air attack on a regular basis. One of the gun sites received a direct hit, killing Bombadier Painter and Gunners Amphlett and Smith, and wounding Gunner Hoare and Gunner Marrable, who subsequently died of their wounds. At 1800 hours the five were buried by Major Worcester. 6 ii. CHARLES GEORGE, born 1892 in Barton Stacey, second son of John and Emma (Rolfe) Hoare. Charles married Bessie Smart in Mrs Hoare died in 1929 aged only 41 and the family moved from Wades Cottages to Chalk Dell to live with Emma Hoare. Peggy Hoare became the teacher at Barton Stacey school and in 1970 produced what she modestly called a Brief History of Barton Stacey. v. Nancy Betty Doris, born She married Charles S. Compton.
