1 ADOPTED PROGRAM DIRECTOR POLICY The Department of Sustainable Technology and the Built Environment (STBE) shall have directors to provide leadership for the undergraduate and graduate programs. It is the general responsibility of a program director to work with the department chairperson and with other program faculty to guide the department toward its goals. This Program Director Policy statement outlines the responsibilities of these positions, the process for selection, the terms of service, and the process for evaluating performance of program directors. According to the ASU Faculty Handbook ( Edition; p. 23): 2.10 The Departmental Graduate Program Director If a department has a graduate program director, that person will receive an initial term of two or more years in accordance with the departmental graduate program director policy. Subsequent terms may be approved in accordance with the departmental graduate program director policy. Review of the graduate program director will follow the departmental graduate program director policy. Every department with a graduate program director must develop a departmental graduate program director policy, approved by the department, specifying how this position will be filled, evaluated for effectiveness, reviewed, renewed, and dismissed (see Article II, Section 2 of the Faculty Constitution). It is the general responsibility of the graduate program director to work with the departmental chair, graduate faculty, and the graduate school to guide the department toward its goals. The graduate program director is the main liaison with the graduate school and is responsible for ensuring that key tasks are completed in a timely manner. It is the general responsibility of the graduate program director to work with the departmental chair and graduate faculty to guide the department toward its goals The Departmental Undergraduate Program Director If a department has an undergraduate program director, that person will receive an initial term of two or more years in accordance with the departmental undergraduate program director policy. Subsequent terms may be approved in accordance with the departmental undergraduate program director policy. Review of the undergraduate program director will follow the departmental undergraduate program director policy.

2 ADOPTED Every department with an undergraduate program director must develop a departmental undergraduate program director policy, approved by the department, specifying how this position will be filled, evaluated for effectiveness, reviewed, renewed, and dismissed (see Article II, Section 2 of the Faculty Constitution). It is the general responsibility of the undergraduate program director to work with the departmental chair and faculty to guide the department toward its goals. RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE STBE GRADUATE PROGRAM DIRECTOR Outside the duties addressed in the ASU Faculty Handbook, it is the specific responsibility of the graduate program director to: Provide leadership and vision for guiding the development of the program curriculum and related initiatives, as a representative voice of the departmental graduate faculty. Align the program with departmental, college, and university vision/mission statements and strategic plans. Manage program budgets, resources, equipment, classrooms, studios, and laboratories. Serve on the STBE department Advisory Committee along with the chairperson, assistant chairperson, coordinators/directors, and others to identify and achieve departmental goals through shared decision-making. Advocate for the graduate program within the department, college, and university to develop continued support and expanded resources for the program. Actively recruit new students for the program via ongoing outreach and promotional activities. Assist with recruitment and hiring of adjunct faculty to teach graduate courses within the department and provide feedback to the DPC regarding the recruitment of tenure-track faculty who have potential to serve as graduate faculty. Assess the teaching effectiveness of adjunct faculty teaching graduate courses. Serve as the primary academic advisor for STBE graduate students. Foster graduate student and faculty connections and collaborations for research projects, Program of Study committees, and thesis committees. Encourage development of innovative research projects that lead to publication and/or funding. Serve as chairperson of the departmental graduate faculty, including facilitating review for graduate faculty status, convening regular meetings of the graduate faculty committee

3 ADOPTED (comprising all members of the STBE graduate faculty), and keeping graduate faculty members informed about graduate program policies, news, and events. Coordinate academic year and summer course scheduling with the assistant chairperson. Serve as the primary liaison to the Graduate School. Manage assignment of graduate assistantships, including completing all appointment paperwork, monitoring assistantship hours, and evaluating graduate assistant performance. Develop positive relationships with external advisors and employers via formal advisory committees and/or informal collaborations for the purpose of fundraising, identifying internship and employment opportunities for students, and consultation regarding program curricula, facilities, equipment, research, and other activities. Provide oversight of various tasks delegated to graduate program faculty, including: program assessment, curriculum and policy changes, academic advising, internships, accreditation, orientation sessions, scholarships, alumni relations, website/social media, new student recruitment, building tours, and industry relations RESPONSIBILITIES OF STBE UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM DIRECTOR Within the STBE department, undergraduate program directors are those individuals specifically identified to oversee the various functions of the undergraduate Sustainable Technology or Building Sciences programs. It is the specific responsibility of the undergraduate program directors to: Provide leadership and vision for guiding the development of the program curriculum and related initiatives, as a representative voice of the program area faculty. Align the program with departmental, college, and university vision/mission statements and strategic plans. Manage program budgets, resources, equipment, classrooms, studios, and laboratories. Serve on the STBE department Advisory Committee along with the chairperson, assistant chairperson, coordinators/directors, and others to identify and achieve departmental goals through shared decision-making. Advocate for his/her program within the department, college, and university to develop continued support and expanded resources for the program. Actively recruit new students for the program via ongoing outreach and promotional activities. Assist with recruitment and hiring of high quality tenure-track and adjunct faculty.

4 ADOPTED Assess the teaching effectiveness of adjunct faculty teaching program area courses. Advise incoming transfer students and develop community college articulation agreements. Coordinate academic year and summer course scheduling with the assistant chairperson. Develop positive relationships with external advisors and employers via formal advisory committees and/or informal collaborations for the purpose of fundraising, identifying internship and employment opportunities for students, and consultation regarding program curricula, facilities, equipment, research, and other activities. Provide oversight of various tasks delegated to program faculty, such as: program assessment, curriculum changes, academic advising, internships, accreditation, orientation sessions, Senior Portfolio Review, student competitions, graduation awards, service-learning initiatives, sponsored studios/projects, scholarships, alumni relations, website/social media, new student recruitment, building tours, ASU Open House, and industry relations. SELECTION OF PROGRAM DIRECTORS Individuals serving in the role of undergraduate program directors are usually drawn from among members of the departmental faculty who are in a tenure-track position or line (including Practitioner-in-Residence). The graduate program director will be drawn from among members of the department s graduate faculty. Selection of undergraduate and graduate program directors will be made by the departmental chairperson, in consultation with program faculty. Every effort will be made to select program directors with the following characteristics and qualities. They should: 1. Possess a thorough knowledge of the program, including its history, curriculum structure, faculty and staff; student capabilities and learning goals; relationships with other programs within the department; and personnel, space, equipment and other resources needs. 2. Be regularly available throughout the week to carry out assigned tasks in support of departmental and program goals. 3. Be knowledgeable regarding current University regulations and resources. 4. Demonstrate the capability and willingness to actively engage with students, staff, faculty, and administrators to promote the goals of the department and the program. UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM DIRECTOR TERM OF SERVICE Undergraduate program directors will receive an initial one-year appointment made by the department chairperson, in accordance with this Departmental Program Director policy. Appointment to subsequent terms will be determined by the department chairperson, with renewable multi-year appointments of up to three years each possible. This appointment may be terminated by the department chairperson regardless of whether the program director has served the full term. This position is not one of those positions for which persons occupying them may be considered for permanent tenure in that role. Course releases or monetary stipends associated with the position of undergraduate program director are subject to negotiation and available resources.

5 ADOPTED GRADUATE PROGRAM DIRECTOR TERM OF SERVICE The graduate program director will receive an initial term of two years, made by the department chairperson in accordance with this Departmental Program Director policy. Appointment to subsequent terms will be determined by the department chairperson, with renewable multi-year appointments of up to three years each possible. This position is not one of those positions for which persons occupying them may be considered for permanent tenure in that role. Monetary stipends associated with the position of graduate program director adhere to standard University practices. REVIEW OF PROGRAM DIRECTORS Review of all program directors will be initiated by the department chairperson annually during the Spring semester, to occur sometime before April 15 th. The review process will consist of a set of questions developed by the department chairperson. All members of the program faculty will be given an opportunity to evaluate the program director. The department chairperson will compile and review the evaluation responses and prepare a short, summary report. This will be discussed at an annual review meeting between the department chairperson and the director. The annual review for the program director will be in addition to his/her annual review as a regular faculty member, and should focus on performance in the role of program director.
