11 Focus on some hot W3C topics Linked data and semantic Web Digital Publishing Open data; e-gov HTML5 as an integration platform Web & TV Web Payment Web of Things 11

12 WHAT WE DO W3C Data Activity (1/2) DATA ON THE WEB : to develop the open data ecosystem, facilitating better communication between developers and publishers; to provide guidance to publishers that will improve consistency in the way data is managed, thus promoting the re-use of data; to foster trust in the data among developers, whatever technology they choose to use, increasing the potential for genuine innovation. The guidance will take two forms: a set of best practices that apply to multiple technologies, and vocabularies currently missing but that are needed to support the data ecosystem on the Web. 12

13 WHAT WE DO W3C Data Activity (2/2) CSV ON THE WEB : Provide technologies whereby data dependent applications on the Web can provide higher interoperability when working with datasets using the CSV format : mechanisms for interpreting a set of CSVs as relational data (definition of a vocabulary for describing tables expressed as CSV, and the relationships between them) Objective: CSVs as 5 star data - a format that allows data to be linked to other sources - using the Web as an intelligent data platform rather than as a simple distribution system for files containing inaccessible data 13

14 HOW WE CAN HELP Focus on semantic web Provides a common framework to share Linked Data across applications, enterprises, and communities Participation from a large number of researchers and industrial partners Semantic Web Based on the Resource Description Framework RDF, OWL, SPARQL Several active groups (RDF, SPARQL, Linked Data Platform ) involving worldwide leaders (Google, Baidu, Yandex ) 14
