2 Ⅰ. Introduction This program is designed foreigners who intend to learn Korean language and culture at Dong-A University. Foreigners can learn the Korean language while increasing their knowledge of Korea through various programs on traditional and popular Korean culture. It offers as well a wealth of information needed for their stay in Korea. For both undergraduate and graduate students about to undertake course work in their respective schools, this program offers an introduction to the various academic fields in Korea, providing a stepping-stone on their way to advanced studies. 1. Course Information A. Schedule of classes: First quarter (14 weeks), Summer Quarter (8 weeks), Second quarter (14 weeks), and Winter Quarter (8 weeks) B. Depending on the assessment, students are assigned to one of the following classes: Beginner 1, Beginner 2, Intermediate 1, Intermediate 2, Advanced 1, and Advanced 2. Each class is composed of about 15 students. (The classes may be cancelled if the number of students is less than 10.) C. Classes are held 4 hours a day, 5 days a week. Lessons on the Korean language and Korean culture are the major subjects. D. Course Schedule Quarter First Summer Second Winter Period March 16, 2009 (Mon.) - June 19, 2009 (Fri.) 3 Ⅰ. Introduction 2. Curriculum Level Beginning 1 Beginning 2 Intermediate 1 Intermediate 2 Advance 1 Advance 2 Course Objective Korean letters, pronunciation, basic vocabulary, and grammar Acquisition of basic information for various situations and knowledge of personal and informal affairs including family and work Various grammar elements including auxiliary verbs as well as causative and passive verbs; idioms, abstract and general expressions Korean culture including legend, myth, holidays, etc. Korean situation (economy, society, politics, etc.) and various business language and knowledge Formal expression in various situations Lessons to encourage natural communication capacity while facilitating the understanding of Korean way of thinking through idiomatic expressions, proverbs, etc. Understanding the wide range of Korean culture including high and low culture, sports, and entertainment Various vocabulary changes, discourse to make new sentences Understanding the news in the newspapers while taking graduate and undergraduate courses Discussion and debate while practicing special expressions to improve vocabulary Promotion of vision for the future and professionalism through research on various topics and preparation of reports
4 3. Learning Assessment A. Academic results are based on the midterm exam, final exam, and class assignments. Midterm Final Assignment Total 45 points 45 points 10 points 100 points B. Tardiness and absences are strictly managed (2 tardys equal 1 absence). C. Completion of the course, the prerequisite for the next level, is based on more than 80% of attendance and more than 70 points of the total grade. Students who have completed the two intermediate courses are qualified to enter Dong-A University.

Special Activities Through special activities such as exercise materials in real settings, students have an opportunity to experience Korean culture and derive the maximum benefit from Korean education. A. Special activities 1) Korean Speech Contest: It encourages the logical expression of Korean. 2) Summer camp: Through 1 night and 2 day-camps, the students build friendship. 3) Composition Contest in Korean: This competition held in the fall quarter. 4) Cooking Korean dishes: The students are challenged to cook Korean dishes including kimchi and pajeon (green onion pancake). B. Curricular activities 1) Experiencing traditional culture: Students experience traditional Korean culture by wearing Hanbok (traditional Korean costume), practicing taekwondo, dancing, watching and listening to performances of Samulnori (folk music accompanied by four percussion instruments), etc. 2) Sports competition: Through sports, the students build friendships, while understanding various cultures. 3) Cultural exploration: It is an opportunity for the students to understand Korean culture and learn about the regional characteristics in Korea by touring Busan, Gyeongju, and Andong. 4) Play Festival: The students are encouraged to enhance their Korean capacity by directly preparing a scenario on stage and performing. From folk tales to comedy, they learn about various aspects of Korean culture. C. Support activities : Korean assistants, home-stay, walking tour, visiting a rural community, participation in various festivals held in Dong-A and other universities, etc.

Applicants Qualification A. Graduates from high school or its equivalent (Only for those who enter university as freshmen) B. Those who are able to acquire qualifications to stay for the purpose of undertaking language courses or overseas study according to the Immigration Control Law
7 3. Application Process Submission of documents related to admission and payment of fees (Mail or drop-in) Screening the document; notice is given to individual applicants. Paying for the total tuition fee under the applicant s name; inform the school (FAX or phone) of payment status. Confirming the payment; send the certificate of admission and receipt of the tuition to the applicant. Visa application with the received documents (The school takes charge of the visa request of Chinese students). Entry to Korea after getting visa Placement test 4. Documents for application A. Required documents Documents An application form for the Korean Course in Dong-A University A certificate of graduation from the final academic institution and transcript of record Copy of passport Photos Fee: W 50,000 Note global.donga.ac.kr (download) Notarized document is mandatory. 2 photos (3cm x 4cm) Not refunded B. Additional documents (For Chinese students) 1) Certificate of guardian s financial status and proof of income (original copy) 2) Original copy of the certificate of family relationship (Issued by the State Administration of Public Security) 3) A copy of family s register 4) A copy of parents and the applicant s license 5) A letter of recommendation by the principal of the applicant s high school
8 6) A certificate of graduation and transcript of elementary, middle, and high schools (Notarized documents issued from final academic institution is mandatory.) Ⅱ. Admission 5. How to deposit A. The fee has to be wire-transferred using bank on-line service in Korean won. B. The deposit has to be made under the applicant s name; otherwise, the remittance receipt must be submitted indicating the applicant s name. 6. Registration Cancellation and Refund * Applicants who want to cancel their registration have to fill out the refund application form and submit it to the Office of International Affairs, Office of Administration, International Education Team, Dong-A University. * The tuition is refunded according to the condition stated below and the dormitory fee is subject to differential refund depending on the date of entry to the dormitory. Other miscellaneous charges are not refunded. * After the acquisition of the visa, the cancellation of admission is reported to the Korean Immigration Service. A. Conditions for refund 1) 100% refund in the event that the applicant is unable to get a visa to enter Korea 2) 100% refund in the event that none of the classes is suitable for the applicant 3) Refer to the following in the event of requesting refund for personal reasons (But the wire-transfer is charged to the applicant) Period Amount Before starting the course 95% of the total tuition Two weeks after starting the course 70% of the total tuition More than two weeks after starting the course No refund B. Documents to submit 1) Applicants without a visa: Application of refund, copy of bank book, standard certificate of admission
9 2) Applicants with a visa: Application of refund, copy of bank book * The bank book should be under the applicant s name and when applicant requests the refund to a bank account of another person, a copy of the person s license, copy of bank book, and power of attorney must be submitted.
10 Ⅲ. Miscellaneous Information 1. Visa Information A. Kinds of visa 1) C-3 - Short-term, general / Less than 90 days stay Subject: Those who intend to stay for the short-term only with the purpose of touring, visiting relatives, participating in various events or conferences related to culture and art, general training, lesson, and other similar purposes (excluding those with commercial purposes) 2) D-4 - General training / More than 91 days stay Subject: Those who participate in a Korean language program, study in an academic institute besides educational institutions with D-1 (Overseas study) status or scientific research institutions, and technical and skills programs in a national/public research institution (Training center organization), etc. B. Issue of Alien Registration Card 1) Documents to submit: An application form of Alien Registration, passport, 1 photo (3 x 4cm), certificate of enrollment, Fee: W10, 000 (Official seal) 2) Issuing organization: Korean Immigration Service C. Extension of stay 1) From 2 months before the expiration of the period stated in the visa to the date of visa expiration (Fine is charged when exceeding the period) 2) Submission of required documents with the applicant s current address by the applicant or a third person to the immigration service (Unable to extend other than Korea) 3) Documents needed for each applicant * Common fee: W 30,000 for official seal * C-3: Passport, application form *D-4: Passport and Alien Registration Card, application form, copy of bank balance, certificate of enrollment (Period of language course participation and record regarding attendance)
