3 Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan. A Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP) is required for all staff and students unable to self-evacuate in an emergency. Provision for staff/students/visitors who are unable to selfevacuate is the responsibility of the organiser of the class/lecture/event/meeting. 5 Disabled Access Guide for Numbers Buccleuch Place. These buildings have not been designed for, but in part have been adapted for the use of persons in wheelchairs, persons who have difficulty with mobility or are infirm. Seating is available. Accessible and standard toilets are also available. Introduction. Numbers Buccleuch Place were constructed in the year 1800 and currently house various departments including the Economics Department. See Department Locations for more details. Location. Numbers Buccleuch Place are located on Buccleuch Place in central Edinburgh. The building is located within the city centre and is within two miles of the main halls of residence at Pollock Halls. The nearest railway line is at Waverley Station in the city centre. The nearest bus stops are located on Buccleuch Street approximately 160 metres from this block of buildings. Numerous bus services stop on Buccleuch Street. Details of timetables are available from Lothian Buses, from their offices within the city and online from Persons with mobility difficulties arriving by vehicle can access this block of buildings from George Square, Chapel Street and Buccleuch Street. 7 Parking. There are numerous parking bays located around Numbers Buccleuch Place but no free parking; all parking bays being permit or pay and display. Pay and Display Parking. City of Edinburgh Council pay and display parking is available along Buccleuch Place. All pay and display parking is situated on a cobbled surface and is not recommended for wheelchair users without assistance. Please note that there are limited dropped kerbs along Buccleuch place. See Location Map. Disabled Parking Bays. There is one disabled parking bay located close to Numbers Buccleuch Place and ample parking to the front of the building for Blue Badge Holders. Please note that this disabled parking bay is not recommended for wheelchair users without assistance. The disabled parking bay has an uneven granite sett surface and is located to the rear of the George Square Theatre. There are currently no dropped kerbs leading from this disabled parking bay to the adjacent footpath. George Square Theatre disabled parking bay image. University Parking. There closest University car park is located to the rear of Number 13 Buccleuch Place. This car park has an uneven stone chip surface and a limited number of parking bays. There are additional University car parks located around George Square and Buccleuch Place. See Location Map. If you do not hold a valid permit and require use of a University parking bay, it is recommended that contact is made with your host or the Transport & Parking Office prior to making your journey. 8 Outside Access. There are four entrances to Numbers Buccleuch Place. If you require access to Number 32 Buccleuch Place please enter via Entrance 3. Entrance 3 is the only entrance which incorporates a platform lift and offers level access to this block of buildings. See Internal Access for more information. Entrance 1. This entrance is located on a level stone surface to the front of Number 30 Buccleuch Place. Entrance 1 provides access to the Ground Floor of the building and can be accessed from the adjacent footpath via a flight of stone steps. Steps leading to this entrance incorporate handrails to both sides but do not incorporate contrasting nosings or tactile coverings. Entrance 1 consists of a single step and a heavy single width timber door. This door leads to a small vestibule area and a large single width glazed door. All doors open inward, are operated manually and incorporate door handles at an accessible height. Entrance 1image. Entrance 2. This entrance is located on a level stone surface to the front of Number 31 Buccleuch Place. Entrance 2 provides access to the Ground Floor stairwell and can be accessed from the adjacent footpath via a flight of stone steps. Steps leading to this entrance incorporate handrails to both sides but do not incorporate contrasting nosings or tactile coverings. Entrance 2 consists of a single step and a heavy single width timber door. This door opens inward, is operated manually and incorporates door handles at an accessible height. Entrance 2image. Page 7.
9 Entrance 3. This entrance is located on a level stone surface to the front of Number 33 Buccleuch Place. Entrance 3 can be accessed from the adjacent footpath via a flight of stone steps or a stair lift. Steps leading to this entrance incorporate handrails to both sides but do not incorporate contrasting nosings or tactile coverings. There is a door bell located to the right of the stair lift which is within comfortable reach of a wheelchair user and is linked to the reception. See Stair Lifts for more details. Entrance 3 consists of a small tactile ramp and a manually operated single width timber door. This is a fairly heavy door which leads to a vestibule area and a single width glazed door. The internal door is operated manually and incorporates a viewing panel at a wheelchair accessible height. Please note that the external door is held open during normal building opening hours to promote ease of access. All doors open inward, will permit the passage of a wheelchair and incorporate door handles at an accessible height. Entrance 3image. Entrance 4. This entrance is located on a level stone surface to the front of Number 34 Buccleuch Place. Entrance 4 provides access to the Ground Floor stairwell and can be accessed from the adjacent footpath via a flight of stone steps. Steps leading to this entrance incorporate handrails to both sides but do not incorporate contrasting nosings or tactile coverings. Entrance 4 consists of a single step and a heavy single width timber door. This door opens inward, is operated manually and incorporates door handles at an accessible height. There is an intercom located on the railings to the left of the steps. The intercom is linked to different departments within the building and is within comfortable reach of a wheelchair user. 10 Internal Access. There is good level access between Numbers Buccleuch Place on the Ground Floor of the buildings. There is currently no level access to the upper or lower floors of these buildings and no level access to Number 34 Buccleuch Place. The majority of doors within Numbers are wide single width doors which will permit the passage of a wheelchair and incorporate door handles at an accessible height. Please note that all combination locks located throughout this block of buildings are above an accessible height. Level Access to Number 30 Buccleuch Place. Please note that this access route is only recommended for wheelchair users with assistance. The level access route to the Ground Floor of Number 30 Buccleuch Place starts from the platform lift at Entrance 3. From the Entrance 3 lobby it is necessary to negotiate two single width doors, a short corridor and an additional single width door. See Ground Floor Plan for more details. All doors along this access route will permit the passage of a wheelchair but incorporate combination locks above the recommended wheelchair accessible height. If you require level access to Number 30 Buccleuch Place it is recommended that contact is made with your host or the buildings reception prior to making your journey. International Office Reception. This reception is located on the Ground Floor of Number 33 Buccleuch Place. See Ground Floor Plan for Location. The reception can be accessed from the building lobby via a manually operated single width timber door. This door opens inward, will permit the passage of a wheelchair and incorporates door handles at an accessible height. There is standard seating located within the reception and good circulation space for wheelchair users. The reception desk does not incorporate a lowered section within comfortable reach of a wheelchair user and it is currently not equipped with an induction loop system. The reception can answer general enquires and provide information on departments within the building. Please note that this reception can also provide access to the external stair lift. If you require the use of the stair lift it is recommended that contact is made with your host of the reception prior to making your journey. See Contact Information for more details. 11 Economics Reception. The reception is located on the Ground Floor of Number 30 Buccleuch Place. See Ground Floor Plan for location. There is level access to this reception via Number 33 Buccleuch Place. The reception can be accessed via a single width manual glazed door from the Entrance 1 lobby. This door opens inward, will permit the passage of a wheelchair and incorporates a door knob at a wheelchair accessible height. There is good circulation space throughout the reception and all desks are within comfortable reach of a wheelchair user. Please note that the reception is currently not equipped with and induction loop system. The reception can provide directions and information on departments within the building. Lifts. There are no lifts within Numbers Buccleuch Place. Stair Lift. There is one stair lift located to the front of Number 33 Buccleuch Place. This stair lift provides level access to the Ground Floor of Number 33 and can also be used to gain access to Numbers See Internal Access for more information. Please note that the stair lift is not left active at all times and that it requires a key from the reception to operate it. The lift controls are located on the lift and at the top/ bottom of the stairs. 12 Stairs. There are six main staircases located within Numbers Buccleuch Place. The majority of staircases within this block of buildings incorporate contrasting nosings on steps and handrails to one or both sides. See Ground Floor Plan for locations. The six staircases are listed below: Staircase 1. This staircase is located within Number 30 Buccleuch Place. Staircase 1 provides access between the Ground Floor of Number 30 and the First Floor of Number 31. Staircase 2. This staircase is located within Number 30 Buccleuch Place. Staircase 2 provides access between the Basement Floor and the Ground Floor of Number 30. Staircase 3. This staircase is located within Number 31 Buccleuch Place. Staircase 3 provides access between the Basement Floor and the Fourth Floor of Number 31. Staircase 4. This staircase is located within Number 32 Buccleuch Place. Staircase 4 provides access between the Basement Floor and the Ground Floor of Number 32. Staircase 5. This staircase is located within Number 33 Buccleuch Place. Staircase 5 provides access between the Basement Floor and the Ground Floor of Number 33. Staircase 6. This staircase is located within Number 34 Buccleuch Place. 13 Toilets. There are standard Male, Female and Unisex toilets located throughout this block of buildings. There is a single accessible toilet located within Number 33 Buccleuch Place. See Floor Plans for locations. Toilets are available as follows: Number 30 Buccleuch Place. Standard Male and Female toilets are located on the Basement Floor. Number 31 Buccleuch Place. Unisex toilets are located on the First, Second, Third and Fourth Floors. Please note that the toilets on the upper floors incorporate a raised threshold. Number 33 Buccleuch Place. There is one accessible toilet located on the Ground Floor. The accessible toilet incorporates the following: There is left hand lateral transfer space. There is good manoeuvring space. There is an emergency pull chord. The door opens inward. The width of the accessible toilet door is suitable for wheelchairs. There are suitable dropdown and support rails for transfer. The tap type is lever operation. There are no coat hooks. The contrast between the grab rails and wall is fair. The contrast between the walls and floor is good. Lighting levels are good. Number 34 Buccleuch Place. Standard Male and Female toilets are located on the First Floor. Unisex toilets are located on the Second, Third and Fourth Floors. Page 12.
