2 My research... The poster format is an effective and popular method for communicating information and we are excited to offer a poster session as part of the 2017 No Frills program. Poster presentations are a versatile method for displaying information, and we encourage you to make use of graphics such as maps, photographs, and charts in addition to your poster text. The poster format leaves you available for more personal interaction and in-depth discussion with colleagues about your research. The benefits of a poster presentation include: Creative and innovative visual elements More intimate, less formal interaction with audience More opportunity for discussion and networking with delegates A chance to win the Judge s Choice and People s Choice awards for the best poster presentation. The National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) and TasTAFE are calling for abstracts for presentations and poster sessions for the 26th National Vocational Education and Training Research Conference No Frills. We invite industry, practitioners, policymakers and researchers to share their work relevant to the vocational education and training (VET) sector. Abstract submissions We are now accepting abstracts for posters via the online submission form. Only submissions made using the poster submission form will be considered. The title must clearly reflect the content of the abstract. The abstract should consist of a concise, self-contained description that clearly summarises the work (500 words maximum). All presenters (both oral and poster) must register for the conference as a paying delegate. Typically people will be accepted for only one oral and one poster presentation. Selection criteria Selection will be based on the following criteria: Clarity and quality of the abstract Originality of the work Alignment with the conference themes The selection panel will be seeking a breadth of views and perspectives from across the sector. 2 NCVER

3 Key dates Monday, 20 February 2017 Monday, 6 March 2017 Monday, 13 March 2017 Late March 2017 Friday, 2 June 2017 Friday, 2 June 2017 Wednesday, 5 July 2017 Abstract submissions due Abstract acceptance notifications Deadline for presenters to accept offer Program release and registration opens Deadline for abstract changes or updates Deadline for presenter to register as conference delegate Conference begins Poster specifications Size: Minimum of 840mm and maximum of 1190mm along their longest edge (e.g. A1 or A0). Weight: No more than 1.5 kilograms to enable it to be affixed to a display panel with long pins (which NCVER will supply). Poster layout How you present your research is up to you. Your poster can comprise any combination of: Many smaller pages (A3 or A4 size, for example); or 1 or 2 larger poster(s), which can be professionally printed You are also welcome to bring copies of handouts for your audience. NB: Electrical outlets, projection equipment and tape recorders will not be provided in the poster session area. Set up It is your responsibility to print your own poster. You will be allocated a display panel on which to mount your poster. All materials must be attached to the display panel (with assistance from conference organisers) by 4:00pm on Wednesday, 5 July for display at the welcome reception and during the dedicated poster session on Thursday. If you are unable to attend the welcome reception, please contact the organisers to arrange delivery of your poster material. Prior to the conference, NCVER will provide a landscape-oriented A3 sign with the title of your poster and your name (as listed in the conference program). This will be attached to the top right-hand-corner of your display panel. Please nofrillsabstracts@ncver.edu.au by 2 June if your poster title or listed presenter do not match what is listed in the conference program. Poster session times The poster session will be held on Thursday, 6 July, and will run for approximately 45 minutes (concurrently with morning tea). Where possible, posters should remain on display until 12:30pm on Friday, 7 July. Any material not removed by 3:30pm on Friday, 7 July will be disposed of by conference organisers. 4 Poster tips and tricks Posters should include: An abstract or summary of the research (optional) A background and/or purpose section Information about your methodology Key messages (if the research has been completed/or is nearing completion) Arrows, numbers or letters, as required, to indicate the reading order Clear headings for each section of the poster Lettering that can be read from two metres away, e.g. Arial, bold font, 20 point Posters should be: Made from fabric, paper or cardboard; posters may be laminated Eye-catching and engaging to the audience (keep in mind when preparing your poster that your audience may be up to two metres away, so it should be easy to read and understand from that distance) Final checklist Is the poster reader-friendly, clear and concise? Ask yourself the following questions: Am I drawn to this poster? Can colleagues quickly examine the poster and understand major points? Have I used plain English? Would an interested reader learn enough to ask informed questions? Does it stimulate interest and conversation? (use of pictures and colour) Does the poster point readers to my most important findings? Set up your poster by 4:00pm on Wednesday, 5 July or organise alternate arrangements with the conference organisers. Poster session will be held on Thursday, 6 July and will run for approximately 45 minutes. Remove poster after 12:30pm on Friday, 7 July (noting that your poster will be disposed of at 3:30pm by conference organisers should this not occur). The Judge s Choice and People s Choice awards for best posters will be presented during the conference close on Friday, 7July NCVER

5 Poster examples and resources There are many resources available online with tips and examples of good poster designs, and what to avoid. Some key resources are listed below. Below are two examples of posters: the top is a bad poster that is difficult to read and may not draw people to the poster; the second is a good poster that clearly displays the required information.
