Use D2L for that purpose. NOTE: Students are responsible for all information contained herein. Professing a lack of knowledge of this information will not suffice as an excuse for not following course guidelines. 2. Syllabus Changes: Your instructor reserves the right to change the syllabus at any time. The contents of this syllabus are subject to revision 24 hours a day, seven days a week, throughout the entirety of the semester. If changes are made to the syllabus, changes will be posted under announcements in the course site, so check announcements often. 3. Contacting the Instructor: Do not contact the department office for matters pertaining to class. Use the function in the D2L course site and select only your instructor s name from the recipient list. Put the course name and CRN (found on your syllabus) in the subject line (for example, SPAN1114 CRN##### ). Mail sent from non-d2l addresses and without the course name and CRN won t be opened or receive a reply. Use your instructor s professional title (found above on your syllabus) in all course correspondence. Instructors check at least once a day M-F and will make every effort to respond within 48 hours of receipt, excluding Saturdays and Sundays, university holidays, and leave for professional travel. 4. Course Description: This course is an introduction to Spanish grammar and vocabulary and emphasizes the development of speaking, writing, reading and listening in the language. Content vocabulary and grammar-- and assessments are tailored to meet the needs of law enforcement personnel, but the course is the equivalent of Elementary SPAN1114 at UCO and fulfills one semester of the foreign language requirement for UCO Criminal Justice majors and minors to whom enrollment is restricted. Credit may not be earned for both SPAN1114 and SPAN1243. Heritage speakers of Spanish and students with 2 or more years of Spanish study in high school may not enroll in this course. 5. Course Objectives: Successful completion of the course will enable students to use novice-level Spanish vocabulary and grammatical structures and to employ that knowledge to develop reading, writing, listening and speaking skills in the target language. The course also enables students to develop a basic working vocabulary useful in situations encountered in law enforcement settings. Material will be presented through text assignments, practical application of grammar and vocabulary topics through the lab and workbook exercises, and other activities as assigned. This course specifically advances the UCO Central Six goals of global & cultural competency and discipline knowledge, and indirectly promotes those of leadership, problem solving, and engagement with the community. 3 3 6. Prerequisites: No course prerequisites, but enrollment is restricted to Criminal Justice majors and minors. This course is designed for beginning students of Spanish, defined as those with little or no prior study of the language. If you have had 4 or more semesters of high school Spanish (2 years), you are not eligible to take this course. You may take the CLEP test to receive credit for SPAN1114 and possibly 1224 or 2113, depending on your score. To arrange this test, call It is recommended that online students have previous experience with an online course and at least minimum computer skills, strong independent learning skills, and excellent organization and time management skills. 7. Accessing the Course: Access the course through using your UCONNECT username and password. If you are unable to login, contact UCO Technology Support at (405) Required Texts and Technology: These must be purchased by the first day of class. An edition other than the one specified may not be used. Work missed because you are not able to purchase texts by then-- whatever the reason--cannot be made up. If you cannot purchase the required texts and YouSeeU code by the first day of classes, do not remain enrolled in this course. To use financial aid for texts and codes, they must be purchased through the university bookstore. Point System: Grading Criteria: Chapter Exams 33% Daily Work 20% Connect Exercises: 10% Lab/WB/LearnSmart/Practice Spanish Video Tests 7% Culture Activities 12% Short Writing Assignments 8% Entrevista Final (Oral Exam) 10% Grading Scale: A: B: C: D: F: 59-0 Grading Feedback: Grading times are 7 business days (M-F) after the due date for shorter assignments like DW and Chapter exams and 14 days after the due date for longer assignments like CAs and SWAs. Faster feedback is available for Connect exercises which provide immediate responses. D2L quizzes provide some immediate feedback if you review your submission. Instructors will review all work in D2L. See orientation modules and D2L FAQ for additional grading details. Use the instructions in the course FAQ to calculate your grade at any point in the semester. 10. Late Work: No late work will be accepted. Whether a minute, an hour, or a day, late is late. This isn t a challenge if you re organized and plan ahead. Review the syllabus calendar on day one and do whatever it takes to remind yourself of upcoming due dates. All assignments are available for extended periods ranging from a few days to the entire semester until the assignment s due date. As such, the only events that excuse missing a due date are: 1) a personal illness meaning your own, not somebody else s documented by your physician and stating that you were unable to study and work at a computer for the time leading up to and including the assignment s due date; and, 2) a death in your family for which you may be asked to verifying information. If you have extenuating circumstances that you wish to have considered, you must notify the instructor ASAP through course immediately. Unexpected circumstances like technology problems unrelated to UCO s system, job conflicts, the weather, undocumented personal illness, family illness, and so on will not excuse missed work. Plan ahead and submit assignments early so unforeseen circumstances won t prevent you from submitting work on time. 11. Orientation Assignments: The orientation modules, Introduce yourself to the class video, and the preassessment test must be completed by the designated due date in order to continue in the course, no exceptions. Students who miss the due date will not be able to continue in the course and will be administratively withdrawn from it.

5 5 12. Release Criteria: Chapters and most assessments in this course have release criteria. This means that if you don t read and complete chapter sections and assignments in order you will not be able to access chapter daily work, exams, et cetera. If you cannot view an assessment because you did not complete all work in order and then you miss the assessment s due date, you will not be allowed to make up the work. OJO!: Instructors will not respond to about why an assessment link isn t visible to you when tracking shows you haven t completed the chapter work to release it. View the video in course FAQ about release criteria for more information. 13. Daily Work: There will be one graded Daily Work assignment for each chapter. Do not confuse the graded Daily Work with the graded lab manual, workbook, and other exercises that are done through in McGraw-Hill Connect (and do not confuse Connect with UCONNECT). Complete vocabulary and grammar readings in the textbook and related Connect exercises before attempting a chapter s graded daily work. Access Daily Work through the link in the learning module in D2L for the corresponding chapter. 14. Exams: Exams will be taken after each chapter. The format will vary depending on the material from the chapter being tested and may consist of a combination of short answer, true-false, multiple choice, and translation from English to Spanish. Other formats may be employed when needed to suit the course component being tested. Tests will include listening and reading passages along with vocabulary and grammar sections. If you are suspected of using an on-line translator or any other resource including the textbook for a test, on the first incident, you will receive a zero for the particular section or the entire test. If the problem recurs, you will fail the test and your instructor may exercise the option of failing you for the course. Access exams through the link provided in the learning module for the corresponding chapter. 15. Connect Exercises: Lab, workbook, LearnSmart, grammar tutorials, pronunciation, Salu2 videos, and culture exercises located in Connect comprise a graded course component. This work is for a grade but also will help improve your grades on Daily Work, Chapter Tests, and Video tests. Complete the exercises each week from the assigned chapter by midnight the day before the chapter test. Detailed information for accessing these exercises and specific guidelines are available in the Connect orientation module. Access these exercises through the Connect website, not D2L. One grade will be entered in the D2L grade book for this work at the end of the semester. 16. Video Tests: Access and watch the Telepuntos Salu2 video segments for a chapter through the CONNECT chapter module and then take a brief test about the segments accessed by a link in D2L for the corresponding chapter. 17. Culture Activities: A detailed description of each activity and submission guidelines is available in the chapter module where an activity is located. To see an activity description ahead of time, recommended for working ahead, an activity s description can be accessed by selecting its Dropbox, quiz, or YouSeeU link. These take time to research so work on them well in advance of their due dates. 18. Short Writing Assignments: These are short essays to demonstrate proficiency in communicating in Spanish in a clear and logical manner using vocabulary and grammar covered up to a given point in the semester. If you are suspected of using an on-line translator or having someone else write an essay for you, you

6 6 will fail the assignment and your instructor may exercise the option of failing you for the course. Access these through the learning module for the chapter during which they are due. 19. Practice Spanish Study Abroad: This 3D Immersive game for practicing your Spanish skills in an authentic context is part of your textbook purchase. Playing it is optional, but doing so gives you the opportunity to earn additional points toward the Connect portion of your course grade. The game is accessed through a module in Connect. 20. Entrevista final (Oral/Final Exam): This is a comprehensive oral exam that serves as the course final exam. It s an individual exam requiring you to answer questions in Spanish. A study guide is available in the Entrevista Final module, which you will see once you have completed all preceding modules. If a list of possible questions is provided in the study guide, the instructor, not the student, will choose the questions for the exam, so study all possible questions. Instructions for and a link to this exam are located in the learning module labeled Entrevista Final. YouSeeU will be used to submit this exam. Follow all submission guidelines provided or you will receive a zero on this exam. This exam is required for successful completion of the course. 21. Attendance: Access our course site a minimum of 4 times per week. You may work at your own pace to an extent, but this course has a fixed calendar with specific deadlines for assignments and no late work will be accepted. Assessments are open several days to allow for flexibility and planning ahead, but that flexibility means that there is little excuse for submitting work late. Plan ahead and submit work 1-2 days before it s due. 22. Due Dates: Due dates for all graded work are indicated on the first page of the syllabus, the course calendar. All work must be submitted through the links provided in D2L or through Connect. Work ed to your instructor as attachments will not be graded. If work is due on a holiday and you don t want to work on that holiday, submit the assignment early. Travel or circumstances that leave you without Internet or computer access will not excuse missed work. Assessments will not be opened for an individual to complete before the work is scheduled to be released. If you need a course with more flexible due dates than this course allows because of anticipated work or travel situations or other circumstances, Self-Paced Online Spanish through UCO--also offered online, but without the set due dates of this course--offers a more suitable learning option. 23. Extra Credit: No extra credit will be assigned. There might be opportunities for bonus points made available to all students, but the best plan for success is to study and complete all work so you don t need extra credit. 24. Note that using work from past or other courses constitutes dishonesty. In addition, note course-specific policies indicated in the orientation modules. Students that violate the course or university policy on academic integrity will face serious consequences, which may include failure of the course, as outlined in the course orientation.
