1 NAME DATE LAYERED CURRICULUM PROJECT: FINAL DATE DUE ANCIENT ROME, ITALIAN RENAISSANCE, AND MODERN ITALY The student will demonstrate an understanding of life in ancient Rome, the Italian Renaissance, and the contributions made to the culture of the modern world. EXCELLENT AND NEAT work is required at all levels. Final grade on this layered unit is TWO TEST GRADES. This is an assignment with three layers. The first two will be done completely at school. For completion of both B and C levels of work, you will earn a final grade of B. You will earn a final grade of A if you choose to add an excellent A level project. YOU MAY ONLY TURN IN AN A LEVEL PROJECT IF YOU HAVE DONE B AND C LEVEL WORK. You will receive a grade of A ONLY if you have earned enough points!! Your grade will be the total of earned points. C Level: All activities in this layer are required. 75 points possible 1. Complete Packet about ancient Rome. This includes basic Roman information, the Italian Renaissance and modern Italy. Students may use the textbook as well as their ipads for this packet. Must be complete and correct to earn 50 pts. 2. Note taking: Video on ancient Rome. 10 pts. 3. Latin root words: 10 pts. 4. 2 B : You must complete TWO of these successfully before A level project may be turned in. You choose the two you want to do. This layer will also be required, and all work at this level will be done in class. Excellent work on two projects will earn 10 points. 1. Create a Roman mosaic. (5 points) In class, view PowerPoint of examples of ancient Roman mosaics. Then go to the following site and create your own mosaic or maze. Create a mosaic just like the Romans did! There you will create a mosaic of your own. Your mosaic must represent some form of Roman culture or it will receive no credit. Show your teacher the completed mosaic for your 5 points. 2.Where do the names of the months come from? What month were you born? (5 pts) Create a Pages document, with a title. Type five good sentences about your birthday, and include the information and meaning of your birth month found on these websites. Of course, this must be in your own words and in correct grammatical form. Add a safe to use and share image about ancient Rome. Make certain your spelling, punctuation, and capitalization are all correct to earn all 5 points. 3. The Romans also gave us quotes that are still used today. Ancient Roman writers were the first to use these expressions. Have you ever heard any of these? (5 points) Better late than never. Absence makes the heart grow fonder. There is no place more delightful than home. Choose ONE of the statements above. Choose an app to explain the statement and what the statement means in your own words. Use words and images. Also, tell if you think the statement is true or not, and why. This must be in your own words and in correct grammatical form. Make certain your spelling, punctuation, and capitalization are all correct for 5 pts. 2

3 A Level: CHOOSE ONLY ONE!! Only high quality work will be accepted for grading. Some class time will be designated for research, but much of this assignment will be done outside the classroom. If you plan to do an A level assignment, however, you should begin to plan work on it now, so that when all other work is done, you can turn it in when due. A significant part of the A level grade will be your knowledge of the subject and ability to discuss your project with the class. Do not print out Internet information that you don t understand. YOUR OWN WORDS!! Excellent work will earn up to 15 more points. 1.Complete a 3-D (three dimensional) informational poster about one of the following topics. Your teacher will show you examples of 3-D posters. You must be able to discuss the information on the poster with the class. Use of index cards a great idea. a. Julius Caesar (who was he, life, death, Shakespeare connection?) b. Modern Italian culture (people, cities, food, agriculture, tourism) c. Galileo Galilei (who was he, life, scientific accomplishments) d. The Colosseum in Rome (what, where, significance, gladiators, animals) e. Timeline and map of the spread of Christianity in the Roman Empire f. Roman architecture (arch, dome, examples such as aqueduct, Rome s Pantheon) g. Roman government (republic, Senate, leaders, SPQR, impact on U.S. government) h. World War II Italy (friend or foe?) (Mussolini, Ponte Vecchio, Anzio, Audie Murphy) i. Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius (when, what, where, significance to our understanding of ancient Roman life) j. Artists of the Italian Renaissance (Michelangelo, da Vinci, Raphael, Donatello) (their important works, why important in the Renaissance, where buried) 2. Make a model of a Roman Structure. Research and find illustrations of Roman architecture. Find a particular example, such as an aqueduct, the Colosseum, the Roman Pantheon, Arch of Constantine, or other, etc. Choose sturdy material to make a model of your structure. Required: Use of index cards with talking points of information as you describe your project to the class. 3. Research and write a five-paragraph description of a day at the Roman Forum. Write your story as if you are a Roman Senator, a shopper, or a merchant. Use many descriptive details (adjectives) to tell what the Forum was like. All work must be in your own words, and it may be handwritten or typed on your ipad. Remember to add a title. You may find more information at the links below or other sites or sources. Read aloud to the class

4 4. Draw or paint a picture about a Roman/Italian topic (ancient or modern) approved by your teacher. Work must be done on unlined, neat art paper or canvas, size 8 x 10 or larger. Rumpled papers not accepted. Be able to discuss your artwork, your topic, how you made your choice, how many hours of work it took you to complete. Be honest. Do your own art work. Don t commission art work from someone else. Practice your presentation. 5. Complete a 20 slide Keynote about a Roman/Italian topic that interests you. Make sure to clear the topic with your teacher. Each slide should include an image and bulleted points of information. The first slide is a title slide; the final slide should state the sources you used, alphabetically. Presentation must include much more information than simply reading each slide. Practice your presentation. 6. Design and make a travel booklet. Convince your classmates that Italy would be a great place to visit. You will be required to discuss and explain the information in the booklet. There should be images as well as important factual information in the booklet. Practice your presentation. 7. Dress in Renaissance style clothing and discuss with the class an aspect of the Italian Renaissance (art, science, education, spread of culture) that interests you. You should use numbered index cards for this presentation. Practice your presentation. The presentation should include information in your own words. 8. Have an idea of your own? Let s chat about it. NEAT AND COMPLETE WORK IS REQUIRED AT ALL LEVELS. FINAL POINT TOTAL WILL COUNT AS TWO TEST GRADES. YOU WILL EARN A GRADE OF 100 ONLY IF YOU DO EXCELLENT WORK AT EACH LEVEL.
