1 Avaya Solution and Interoperability Test Lab Application Notes for Configuring Avaya IP Softphone as a Thin Client with Citrix Presentation Server Issue 1.0 Abstract These Application Notes describe the steps required to configure Avaya IP Softphone as a thin client with a Citrix Presentation Server. The Citrix Presentation Server is an application server utilized to host applications, such as Avaya IP Softphone, so the application does not have to be installed locally on the desktop of every user in a large enterprise environment. 1 of 39

2 1. Introduction These Application Notes describe the steps required to configure Avaya IP Softphone as a thin client with a Citrix Presentation Server. The Citrix Presentation Server is an application server utilized to host applications, such as Avaya IP Softphone, so the application does not have to be installed locally on the desktop of every user in a large enterprise environment. Avaya IP Softphone is a software application that provides Avaya customers a PC-based IP-connected endpoint, with capabilities that are similar to traditional analog and digital terminals. Citrix Presentation Server utilizes the Terminal Services component of Windows to allow users to access the Avaya IP Softphone application remotely. For these Application Notes, the Citrix Presentation Server is installed on a Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition Server. The Citrix ICA Client is installed on a Windows XP PC that will access Avaya IP Softphone via the Citrix Presentation Server. This Windows 2003 server was also configured as a Windows Application server. Avaya IP Softphone only supports telecommuter mode for Citrix environments. In the telecommuter mode, Avaya IP Softphone connects to Avaya Communication Manager for call control, and voice communications are performed through a telephone as shown in. It is important to note that Avaya IP Softphone and Avaya IP Agent follow the same installation rules for Citrix as they do for PCs and laptops (i.e., only one of the products can be installed in any environment at a given time). Figure 2 illustrates the configuration that was used to verify these Application Notes. An on-site user at an enterprise site was able to use the Avaya IP Softphone application on the Citrix Presentation Server to handle calls using an Avaya 4621SW IP Telephone in the telecommuter mode. Two additional IP phones (Avaya 9630 and Avaya 4625SW) will be used to conference and transfer calls to and from the Avaya IP Softphone. The administration of the network infrastructure shown in Figure 2 is not the focus of these Application Notes and will not be covered. Instead, the focus of these Application Notes is on configuring Avaya IP Softphone as a thin client using a Citrix Presentation Server. 2 of 39

6 3. Assumptions and Limitations It is assumed that all telephones have been defined in Avaya Communication Manager. It is also assumed that Windows user IDs (e.g., agent1 as referenced in Step 11 of Section 5 and Step 8 of Section 5.1) are defined in Active Directory and added to the Remote Desktop Users group on the Citrix Presentation Server. Members in the Remote Desktop Users group are granted the right to log on remotely. Finally, it is assumed that the Citrix ICA client software has already been installed on the user s PC. 4. Avaya IP Softphone Installation on the Citrix Presentation Server The steps in this section describe the installation of Avaya IP Softphone on the Citrix Presentation Server. Step Description 1. Obtain the Avaya IP Softphone self-extracting executable by contacting an Avaya Sales Representative, Authorized Business Partner, or Dealer. 2. Launch the executable on the Citrix Presentation Server. Select Next on the Welcome to the Avaya IP Softphone R6 Installation Wizard screen. 6 of 39

7 3. Click I accept the license agreement button and click Next to continue. 4. Read the contents of the Readme file. When complete, click Next to continue. 7 of 39

8 5. Select the desired program shortcuts to be created. Click Next to continue. 6. Select a destination folder where Avaya IP Softphone files will be installed. For these Application Notes, the default directory at C:\Program Files\Avaya\Avaya IP Softphone\ is used. Click Next to continue. 8 of 39

9 7. Select IP Softphone for Citrix when selecting features to install. Click Next to Continue. 8. Select any additional sub-features to install. None were selected for these Application Notes. Click Next to continue. 9 of 39

10 9. Click Next to install the Citrix version of IP Softphone. A success message is displayed after the installation is complete (not shown). 10 of 39

11 5. Citrix Presentation Server Configuration The following section describes how to publish the Avaya IP Softphone application, installed in Section 4, on the Citrix Presentation Server. Step Description 1. Log in as a user with administrator privileges. 2. Navigate to Start All Programs Citrix Management Console Presentation Server Console. The Management Console for MetaFrame Presentation Server 4.0 window is displayed. Right-click Applications in the left window pane and select the option to Publish Application (not shown). 11 of 39

12 3. The Welcome to the Application Publishing Wizard window is displayed as shown below. Enter descriptive names for Display Name and Application Description. Click Next to continue. 12 of 39

13 4. Select Application as the Application Type. Enter the command to run Avaya IP Softphone in the Command Line field. The Browse button can be used to locate the Avaya IP Softphone executable installed in Step 6 of Section 4. Enter the directory for Avaya IP Softphone in the Working Directory field. Click Next to continue. 13 of 39

14 5. Accept the default values shown below. Click Next to continue. 14 of 39

15 6. Select the desired window size, number of colors, and startup settings for the Avaya IP Softphone application. Click Next to continue. 15 of 39

17 8. Select the Allow only one instance of application for each user checkbox. Accept the other default values shown below. Click Next to continue. 17 of 39

19 10. Select the name of the Citrix Presentation Server from the Available Servers list and click the Add button to add it to the Configured Servers list. These Application Notes use a Citrix Presentation Server name of TF-CITRIX. Click Next to continue. 19 of 39

20 11. The Specify Users window shown below is used to grant Windows user IDs access to the Avaya IP Softphone application. Select the users from the Look in list and click the Add button to add them to the Configured Accounts list. Click Next to continue. 20 of 39

Citrix ICA Client Configuration This section describes the configuration of the Citrix ICA client on the user s desktop, to access the Avaya IP Softphone application on the Citrix Presentation Server. Step Description 1. Navigate to Start All Programs Citrix Metaframe Access Clients Program Neighborhood to open the Citrix Program Neighborhood application shown below. Doubleclick the Add ICA Connection icon. 23 of 39

24 2. The Add New ICA Connection window is displayed. Select Local Area Network for the connection type as shown below. Click Next to continue. 24 of 39

25 3. Uncheck the Use Default check box. Default values are used for the remaining fields. Click Add to add the IP address of the Citrix Presentation Server. 4. The Add Server Location Address window is displayed. Enter the IP address of the Citrix Presentation Server and accept the default port. Click OK to continue. The user is returned to the Locate Server or Published Application window. Click OK to continue (not shown). 25 of 39

26 5. The user is returned to the Add New ICA Connection window. Enter Avaya IP Softphone as the description for the new ICA connection. Select TCP/IP + HTTP as the network protocol in the drop-down list. Select Published Application and the Avaya IP Softphone application published in Section 5 from the drop-down list. Click Next to continue. 26 of 39

27 6. Accept the default setting to view the application in a separate window. Click Next to continue. 27 of 39

29 8. Enter a valid User name, Password, and Domain for the ICA connection. Click Next to continue. 29 of 39

32 7. Configure IP Softphone This section describes the configuration of the IP Softphone on the users desktop once access to the Avaya IP Softphone application is granted. Step Description 1. From the users PC, navigate to Start Programs Citrix Metaframe Access Clients Program Neighborhood to open the Citrix Program Neighborhood application shown below. Double-click the Avaya IP Softphone icon. 2. The Avaya IP Softphone application will launch if authentication to the Citrix Presentation Server is successful. The following warning message is displayed if this is the first time that the user is logging in. Press Yes to continue. 32 of 39

33 3. Select the default location to store the database. The database file uses a fixed name of softphone.mdb and is stored in the user s default directory for Avaya IP Softphone at: C:\Documents and Settings\<user-name>\Application Data\Avaya\Avaya IP Softphone. Click Save to continue. 4. After creating the default Avaya IP Softphone database, the following warning message is displayed. Click OK to continue. 33 of 39

34 5. Select Log into Avaya call server and Control an Avaya telephone. As a result of these settings, the users Avaya telephone will be used for voice talkpath. Click Next to continue. 6. Enter the Extension and Password of the telephone. Select Remember password for next login session to avoid entering the password in future sessions. Click Next to continue. 34 of 39

35 7. Enter the Primary Server Address, and any additional Alternate Server Addresses, if any exist. Press Next to continue. 8. Enter all required information based on the dial plan in Avaya Communication Manager. Press Next to continue. 35 of 39

36 9. Read the warning message pertaining to emergency call handling features. Press I Agree to continue. 10. Select Enable Emercency Call Handing feature and Your extension number to enable this feature. Press Next to continue. A confirmation message is displayed indicating login setting are configured (not shown). 36 of 39

37 11. The following window is displayed after a user logs in successfully. 8. Verification Steps The following steps can be used to verify that the Avaya IP Softphone thin client configuration is functioning properly. 1. Place a call from the Avaya IP Softphone to an Avaya IP station. Answer the call and verify two way talk path exists with good voice quality. 2. Repeat Step 1, then transfer the call to another Avaya IP station. Answer the call at the new station and verify two way talk path exists with good voice quality. 3. Transfer the call back to the Avaya IP Softphone. Answer the call at the Avaya IP Softphone and verify two way talk path exists with good voice quality. 4. From the Avaya IP Softphone, initiate a three party conference. Verify two way talk path in all directions will good voice quality. 37 of 39
