1 Basketball Test # Alternating Possession 1. If B1 commits a common foul during the jump to start the game, alternatingpossession control is established when thrower A1 has the ball at his/her disposal. 2. It is an alternating-possession procedure following a simultaneous free-throw violation. 3. If the optional coaching box is being utilized, the first technical foul charged directly or indirectly to the head coach results in loss of the coaching box privileges for the rest of the game. 11. A head coach is permitted to be outside the optional coaching box to give instructions to players. 12. The head coach is assessed a direct technical foul if a disqualified player is removed and is subsequently discovered participating in the game. Court and Equipment 13. The net shall be constructed so it will momentarily check the ball as it passes through. 14. The basketball shall be spherical and its color shall be of the approved orange shade or natural color. 15. When the referee tests the ball for proper air pressure, the test shall be conducted on the surface of the playing court. 16. The visiting team has its choice of baskets for pregame practice and for the first half of play. 17. The 2-inch wide coaching box lines shall be off the playing court and need not contrast with the boundary lines. 18. State associations may alter the length and placement of the 14-foot (maximum) coaching box. Definitions 19. A dribble may be started by pushing, throwing or batting the ball to the floor before the pivot foot is lifted.

2 20. A player-control foul may occur during an interrupted dribble. 21. Point of interruption is a method of resuming play after a double personal or technical foul. 22. When play is resumed by a throw-in after a double foul occurs, it takes place at the spot closest to the fouls. 23. A bonus is the second free throw awarded for a common foul, except a player-control of team-control foul. 24. When a technical foul is also charged indirectly to the head coach, it counts only as one team foul. Fouls 25. A multiple foul is a situation in which two or more teammates commit personal fouls against the same opponent at approximately the same time. 26. All common fouls in the last two minutes of the game are automatically intentional. 27. If a foul is committed to neutralize an opponent s obvious advantageous position, it is an intentional foul. 28. An intentional foul may be either personal or technical. 29. An intentional foul is judged solely by the severity of the act. 30. An intentional foul can only occur during a live ball. 31. An intentional foul should always be called when illegal contact occurs away from the ball. 32. Contact away from the ball or when not making a legitimate attempt to play the ball, specifically designed to stop or keep the clock from starting, shall be intentional. 33. A team control foul is a common foul committed foul committed by a player while his/her team is in control of the ball. 34. In a false double foul, the fouls are committed by the same team. Free Throws 35. There are five marked lane spaces on each lane boundary line. 36. Restrictions on players in marked lane spaces apply until the ball is released by the free thrower. 37. If prior to A1 s release of the ball, B1, in a marked space, fakes and causes A2 to violate, it is a simultaneous violation. 38. A substitute throw is awarded if B1 disconcerts free thrower A1 but the attempt is successful. 39. Players in the first marked lane space may step on the block (neutral zone). 40. A player occupying a marked lane space may not have any part of his/her body beyond the vertical plane of the lane boundary or edge of any space. Live Ball Dead Ball 41. The ball becomes dead when an official s whistle sounds for a player-control foul by an airborne shooter even though the ball is in the air on a try for a field goal. 42. The ball becomes dead when a personal foul by A2 occurs while the ball is in flight during a try for a field goal by A The ball is live and continuous motion applies if a defensive foul is committed against someone other than the shooter.

3 44. The ball becomes dead if B1 disconcerts A1 just before A1 releases the ball on a freethrow attempt. 45. The ball does not become dead until the try or tap ends, or until the airborne shooter returns to the floor when the defense commits an excessively swinging elbow violation. 46. The ball becomes dead when a throw-in by A1 enters the basket before it touches or is touched by another player. Official s Duties 47. Any official may recognize and correct the error of failing to award a merited free throw. 48. The officials jurisdiction prior to the game begins when they arrive on the floor. 49. The officials jurisdiction ends when the referee leaves the visual confines of the playing area, even if he/she has not approved the final score. 50. The referee is responsible for ensuring each team is notified three minutes before each half begins. 51. Any official has the authority to penalize team followers for unsporting conduct. 52. When team supporters interfere with the orderly progress of a game, officials may stop the game until host management resolves the situation and the game can proceed in an orderly manner. Out of Bounds Inbounds 53. The ball is out of bounds if it touches an official who has either one or both feet contacting a boundary line. 54. The vertical plane of the boundary line is used to determine if a live ball goes out of bounds. 55. When a rectangular backboard is used, the ball is out of bounds if it passes over the backboard. 56. The ball is out of bounds if it rolls along the top edge of the backboard without touching any supports. 57. A1 causes the ball to go out of bounds when a pass by A1 touches B1, who is standing on the sideline. Penalty Administration 58. No penalty is assessed if a coach uses inappropriate language that is not directed toward an opponent or an official. 59. If bench personnel A6, A7, and A8 leave the confines of the bench when a fight may break out, only one technical foul penalty is administered and one indirect technical foul is charged to the head coach. 60. No free throws are awarded when opponents commit simultaneous personal fouls. 61. The throw-in spot following a flagrant or an intentional personal foul is the division line opposite the table, regardless of where the foul occurred. 62. A2 commits an illegal screen on B1 while A1 attempts to dribble by the screen, which is Team A s eighth team foul. The official awards B1 a bonus free-throw situation. 63. The ball is put in play at the point of interruption if the last foul of a false double foul was a double personal foul.

4 64. While the ball is being passed between A1 and A2, an official calls a double foul on A5 and B5. The ball will be awarded to the team entitled to the alternatingpossession arrow. Scoring 65. A field goal may be scored by an errant pass going through either basket. 66. During a throw-in by A1, a goal is scored if the ball is thrown directly into A s basket. 67. Score three points if A1 throws the ball from behind the three-point line and the ball is legally touched by A2, who is also behind the three-point line and the ball goes through A s basket. 68. If A1 throws the ball through B s basket, two points are scored for Team B. 69. When play is resumed with a throw-in or free throw and three-tenths of a second or less remains on the clock, a player may not gain control of the ball and try for a field goal. 70. If a game is forfeited to the team ahead in the score, the score shall be recorded as 2-0 in that team s favor. Technical Fouls 71. It is a technical foul if thrower A1 delays returning to the court after being out of bounds for the throw-in. 72. It is not a technical foul for a player to purposely obstruct the vision of an opponent with the ball. 73. It is a technical foul if a player removes his/her jersey within the confines of the playing area. 74. It is a technical foul for bench personnel to incite undesirable crowd reactions. 75. A technical foul shall be charged whenever bench personnel are standing while the clock is running. 76. It is a technical foul if a player leaves the court for an unauthorized reason. Throw-ins 77. The ball is awarded for a throw-in at a designated spot nearest the foul after a playercontrol or team-control foul. 78. If a throw-in is to follow simultaneous personal fouls, the throw-in spot is determined by the location of the ball when the fouls occurred. 79. After a double technical foul, the alternating-possession throw-in shall be from the division line opposite the scorer s and timer s table. 80. When the throw-in team violates the provisions of the throw-in, the opponents are awarded the ball for a throw-in at the original throw-in spot. 81. Once the ball has been released by the thrower, opponents may break the throw-in boundary plane. 82. Once a designated spot throw-in begins, the original thrower may be replaced by a teammate to attempt the throw-in. Time-outs

5 83. The team charged with the time-out can dictate whether the time-out will be reduced in length. 84. If one minutes and 30 seconds are used for discussing a correctable error situation with a coach, one 60- and one 30- second time-out are charged to the team if no correction is made. 85. Only one unused time-out from regulation may be carried over to an overtime period. 86. Players may sit of stand during a 60-second time-out, but must remain in their bench area. 87. Only a player or head coach may request and be granted a time-out. 88. A time-out request should only be granted after a player directed to leave the game has been replaced. Uniforms Player Equipment 89. If a player s shirt is not properly tucked inside the pants, the official shall direct him or her to leave the game unless the team is subsequently granted a time-out. 90. If a player wears the uniform pants below the hips, he or she shall be directed to leave the game. 91. A player may remove his/her jersey after being disqualified from the game. 92. Provided both players do not play at the same time, both 0 and 00 are legal numbers for team members. 93. If worn, an undershirt must be similar in color to the torso of the shirt. 94. Only one visible manufacturer s logo/trademark/reference is permitted on the pants, compression shorts and sweatbands/headbands. Violations 95. No violation occurs if dribbler A1 steps on a boundary line when the hand is not in contact with the ball. 96. It is a violation if A1 leaves the floor for an unauthorized reason. 97. No violation occurs when B1 uses his/her thigh to intentionally deflect a pass by A It is a violation if A1 dribbles a second time after losing control of the first dribble because an opponent batted the ball. 99. It is a violation if, in A s frontcourt, A1 passes to A2 but A2 fumbles the ball into A s backcourt where it remains untouched for 10 seconds It is a violation if A1 on a throw-in, passes to A2 who deflects the ball from A s frontcourt to A s backcourt, and it is first touched by A3.
