Groups 1 & 2 - find a partner and read chapter 7 Focusing on the question below, highlight and take notes that give clues that will help answer the question. How does the setting impact Cole's life on the island? 6

7 How does the setting impact Cole's life on the island? Setting Clues Unable to find dry wood, Cole broke branches right off the trees. (page 58) "He needed more than a knife....he walked up to the trees to find a thin, straight sapling to make a spear." (page 59) "..black nothingness of the shrouded woods." (page 60) "...he opened his eyes to an eerie stillness. The sounds that normally filled the night air had quieted. Cole sat up and peered toward the blackness of the tree cover." (page 60 61) How the setting impacted Cole. Fire was smokey because the wood was not dry, smoke burned Cole's eyes but kept the mosquitos away. Since Cole saw the Spirit Bear, he needed a weapon to kill the bear. He used a tree branch to make a spear since he did not have anything else to use. He did not have any weapons in his supplies except for the knife. He had to use what the island provided. Cole could not sleep, he was restless, scared, he felt empty. He began to think about his escape. Cole was afraid that the Spirit Bear was back. He could not sleep. He woke in the morning feeling numb and tired. Cole was feeling scared. 7

8 Critical Thinking Questions 1. Describe Spirit Bear and its characteriscs. 2. What weapon does Cole create and how does he make it? What does he intend to use it for? 3. Cole plans on escaping the island, yet sll aempts to kill Spirit Bear. What does this say about Cole, and his respect for life? 4. As Cole inches towards Spirit Bear, he stops, looks around, and becomes aware that nobody is watching and he could easily back away. 5. What compels him to keep approaching Spirit Bear? 6. As chapter seven begins, Cole finds himself needing to clear the anger and pressure from his mind. Does this bode well for Cole s healing process? Why or why not? 8

9 9
