1 Save the Date Calendar Event Description Save the Date! Willowwind is looking forward to these important events in the school year. Read below for details about each event. Specific details will be further communicated as each event approaches. Please note, Willowwind has the right to change any date, but will provide advance notice of changes. Work Day Saturday, August 9 Parent Work Days are a great time to come together for a common goal and to take care of our building, grounds, and community. They are also the perfect way to earn service hours for the school year. Teachers, faculty, and staff greatly appreciate parents dedication to the school, so mark your calendars for the four Work Days that occur throughout the school year (see additional dates below). Meet and Greet & Ice Cream Social Thursday, August 14 Meet your child s teacher at this open-house styled event. Stay and celebrate the beginning of the school year at WW s Ice Cream Social. Meet new and old Willowwind families and enjoy a bowl of ice cream First Day of School Tuesday, August 19 Required All Day Event Enjoy the first day of school and another year of fun. PreK-6 BSP (Before School Program) is available daily beginning at 7:30 am. K-6 classes begin daily at 8:15 am and dismiss at 3:15 pm on M, T, W, and F. K-6 classes release each Thursday at 2:00 for Early Dismissal. Full Day and AM Preschool begins daily at 8:30 am. AM Preschool dismisses daily at 11:30 and PM Preschool begins daily at 12:30. Full Day and PM Preschool releases daily at 3:30 pm. PreK-6 ASP (After School Program) is available daily until 6:00 pm. Back to School Parent Coffee Tuesday, August 19 The first day of school is a day of celebration as we commence with a new school year of learning and growing. The first Parent Coffee will be serve as a chance to discuss ways of working together to support children, school, growth, and development. Parent Coffees will occur in the GD Space from 8:30 9:15 am. See information below about monthly Parent Coffee dates. Curriculum Night Thursday, September 4 Attendants: ALL PreK-6 Parents Required
2 Join classroom teachers as they discuss Willowwind s yearlong essential question and focus and share information about classrooms curricular adventures for the coming year. Also learn more about the Willowwind Friends and Family committee, after school enrichment classes, and Specials curriculum. September Parent Coffee Friday, October 3 Parent Coffees are a time for parents to come together and engage in what Willowwind does best learning! Willowwind Friends and Family (WFF) will sponsor speakers throughout the year to talk about interesting and challenging topics familiar to parents and families. Mark your calendars for these monthly coffee talks (see additional dates below). Parent Coffees occur on the first Friday of each month, after drop off. PEP Conferences Thursday, September 11 & Thursday, September 18 Attendants: K-6 Parents Required Upon completing a Parent Survey distributed by classroom teachers, K-6 parents schedule a 20-minute PEP conference to discuss potential academic and social goals for individual students. The conference also highlights children s strengths and how to use these strengths to further benefit their academic year. PEP goals are then used to personalize and differentiate each child s instruction. Costume for Kids Drive Monday, September 15 Wednesday, October 1 Ongoing Event In conjunction with Iowa City s Coats for Kids project, Willowwind will be collecting new or gently used costumes for Iowa City children. Donations may include costumes, unopened makeup, wigs, and accessories. A drop off bin will be located near the Front Desk. International Peace Day Friday, September 19 International Peace Day is observed around the world each year on September 21. It is a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace among all nations and peoples. Willowwind students will commemorate the day through education and awareness off issues related to peace. Work Day Saturday, September 20 October Parent Coffee Friday, October 3 Harvest Festival Saturday, October 4 Attendants: PreK-6 Families and Broader Community Encouraged An annual celebration of the bounty of Fall and a wonderful school year. Past activities have included squash bowling, decorating pumpkins, Book Walk, bobbing for apples and Fall harvest snacks.
3 UI Homecoming Parade Friday, October 10 Show your Willowwind spirit and be a part of the University of Iowa s homecoming tradition. Gather your family, dress up in your navy and yellow Willowwind gear and prepare for a great celebration. Willowwind's participation in the UI Homecoming Parade marks a fun, annual tradition for our families. Run for the Schools Sunday, October 19 Join the area community in running for local schools. Register to be a part of Iowa City s annual Run for the Schools where you can participate in a ½ mile or 1 mile fun run, 5K, 10K or half marathon. Halloween Parade Friday, October 31 Students are welcomed to bring their costumes to school where they will participate in Willowwind s Halloween Parade and other events. Parents are invited to watch the Halloween Parade as students excitingly show off their Halloween costumes and gear up for Halloween night. November Parent Coffee Friday, November 7 Parent-Teacher Conferences No School Friday, November 14 Meet with your child s teacher to talk about student development and further areas of focus. Parent-Teacher Evening Conferences Thursday, November 21 Thanksgiving Feast Tuesday, November 25 Attendants: PreK Families; K-6 Students Preschool families will participate in a potluck Thanksgiving Feast. Look for what to bring sign ups. K-6 students and teachers will gather together to give thanks and enjoy traditional foods prepared by the students. Parents are invited to volunteer based on needs communicated by classroom teachers. Performing Arts Night Thursday, December 4 On behalf of Willowwind s after school enrichment programs, join our community to celebrate the arts at Willowwind and congratulate Willowwind s hardworking students. December Parent Coffee Friday, December 5
4 Saturday Preschool Story Time Saturday, December 6 Bring your child (ages 2-5) to this regular interactive story time where children will use their mind, bodies, and imaginations to tell stories, read books and create a fun craft. See additional dates below. Authors Cocoa Thursday, December 18 & Friday, December 19 Attendants: K-6 Families Required Authors Cocoa invites children to read a variety of their own original writing pieces to the Willowwind community. Listen to how students writing grows as K-6 students share their literary talent. Authors Cocoa builds self-confidence and empowers students to use their voice. This event is a milestone for many students, providing them with the confidence to participate in bigger presentations in the future. January Parent Coffee Friday, January 9 Saturday Preschool Story Time Saturday, January 10 One Book Two Book Community Event Date TBD Weekend Event Willowwind will host a booth at Iowa City s 3 rd annual literary festival. This event occurs throughout Iowa City and may include book fairs, reading and writing workshops, awards, games, and prices. Enjoy this community opportunity to help your child build their love for reading and writing. Preschool to Kindergarten Classroom Visit Thursday, January 15 & Friday, January 16 Attendants: Age Eligible PreK entering K Fall 2015 Preschoolers entering Kindergarten in the Fall of 2015 will have the opportunity to visit the Willowwind Kindergarten classrooms. During their visit, they will participate in Kindergarten activities that provide them an opportunity to take a sneak peek into the Kindergarten year, meet the Kindergarten teachers, get to know better Willowwind s Kindergarten community. MLK Day of Service School in Session Monday, January 19 Daytime event Dr. King once said, Life s most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others? Students will answer this question by participating in the National Day of Service. Willowwind s Day of Service events further Dr. King s legacy, converting his life mission into community action. The day will empower students, strengthen communities, and bring Dr. King s dream of a unified community to life. January Curriculum Transition Night Tuesday, January 20
5 This evening event provides you the opportunity to learn more about Willowwind's hands-on, project-based curriculum as teachers discuss intentions and desires for the school year. Come and see why Willowwind's programs are so successful and further children s love for learning. February Parent Coffee Friday, February 6 Saturday Preschool Story Time Saturday, February 7 Book Fair Sunday, February 8 Friday, February 13 Ongoing Event Shop for fiction and nonfiction books for all ages where Willowwind will receive credit for future book and classroom purchases based on total sales. Parent-Teacher Evening Conferences Thursday, February 19 Parent-Teacher Conferences No School Friday, February 27 DEAR Day Monday, March 2 In honor of Dr. Seuss s birthday, Willowwind students will DEAR! (Drop Everything and Read) DEAR Day is an activity that students all over the world participate in. Willowwind students select books of their choosing and find a cozy spot to curl up and enjoy the adventures their books take them on. Where will you DEAR? March Parent Coffee Friday, March 6 Mulch Work Day Date TBD Join Willowwind parents and staff as we prepare the K-6 playground for springtime fun. Wood chip mulch needs to be spread around the playground to provide a safe landscape for running, climbing, and jumping. Mulch Work Day is a great way to earn Family Service Hours. Community Night Thursday, March 12 Attendants: ALL PreK-6 Families Required Join your child and their peers as classes present their culminating projects highlighting their present works and studies. This event allows students to accept challenges and take risks as they perform and work on public speaking. Students also build other skills such as character, self-acceptance, and resiliency.
6 Work Day Date TBD April Parent Coffee Friday, April 3 This month, join the Burrowing Owl students (3/4 grade) as they host April s Parent Coffee and sell baked goods and morning beverages to raise money for their Spring class trip. Grab a coffee and a baked good and enjoy the start of the school day with your child, their friends, and parents. Bring your dollars to support our Owl friends. VIP Day Monday, April 6 Attendants: PreK-6 Families Required Willowwind students invite a special VIP to Willowwind where they are welcome to enjoy an afternoon of fun. VIPs include grandparents, family members, parents, caregivers, family friends. Traditionally, VIP Day begins with a special lunch and includes an extended GD or PreK Line Time and time in the classroom where students share their afternoon activities with their VIPs. Who will be your child s Very Important Person? Spring Music Program Monday, April 6 Attendants: PreK-6 Families Required Cultural Festival Saturday, April 18 Willowwind families bring unique stories to our community. Join our community in it s first Cultural Festival where all families are invited to share their stories with others. Host a booth where students can learn more about the culture and diversity that fill our walls. Holidays, food, celebrations, stories and more you re invite to travel around the world. Willowwind Birthday Celebration Monday, April 20 In 2008, Iowa City Mayor dedicated this day to Willowwind for establishing "a unique learning environment, with emphasis on nurturing the love of learning, building an appreciation of the natural world, and seeking excellence in the acquisition of academic skills while fostering creativity." Read the Mayor's full proclamation at the Front Desk. May Parent Coffee Friday, May 1 Class Plays Thursday, May 7 Attendants: PreK-2 Families Encouraged; 3-6 Families Required Enjoy a night as Willowwind as the 3-6 students entertain our community with their class plays. This evening is the culminating evening for our 3/4 and 5/6 grade classes as their share their Spring studies with you their eager audience. Students choose class play topics as they work together to write, produce, and perform.
7 Piano Recital Tuesday, May 12 Attendants: Piano Students Required; PreK-6 Families Encouraged Enjoy an afternoon of music! Celebrate Willowwind s piano students as they share their piano talent with our community. Congratulate them on their hard work and beautiful music. Solo / Ensemble Band Thursday, May 14 Attendants: Band Students Required; PreK-6 Families Encouraged Enjoy an afternoon of music! Celebrate Willowwind s band students as they share their musical talent with our community. Students will play individual pieces and pieces together as a whole ensemble band. Portfolio Night Wednesday, May 20 Attendants: ALL PreK-6 Families Required Portfolio Night allows children to become expert presenters of their lives at school and the work they do here. It is a time for each student to share with family and friends their love for and successes in school. It is a chance for parents to listen to their child as they make connections between the work of school and their own sense of growth. End of School Picnic Dinner Thursday, May 28 Attendants: PreK-6 Encouraged Join families, faculty, & staff as you bring your own picnic dinner and enjoy a final evening together full of laughter, conversation, food, and play. Celebrate the end of another successful year with your child and their schoolmates. Boxed picnic dinners may be available for purchase. 6 th Grade Graduation Thursday, May 28 Attendants: PreK-5 Encouraged; 6 th Grade Required Graduation Day is a time for celebration. 6 th grade students look forward to this date from the moment they begin school. Join our community as we celebrate our oldest students and encourage them for the future. Students success comes with community and familial support. Show them your support and give them your congratulations.
