Gypframe C Studs are fitted vertically to friction-fit within the channel sections and to abutments, to form the framework. This allows for adjustment during boarding. Studs should be fitted to face the same way and extended by splicing to the specified height. Additional framing is installed as required to support heavy fixtures. Where specified, mineral wool is installed into the cavity-formed frameworks. The frames are braced using Gypframe GAB3 Acoustic Braces or solid braces formed from Gypframe 99 FC 50 Fixing Channel at specified centres. Gyproc Sealant is applied to the frame perimeters to seal airpaths. Boards are screw-fixed to framing members to form the lining. Horizontal board-end joints in face layer boards should be backed with Gypframe GFS1 Fixing Strap. 174 For full installation details, refer to the Installation Guide at

The quoted performances are achieved only if Gypsum Industries components are used and the Company s fixing recommendations are strictly observed. Any variations required to the specification should be checked with Gypsum Industries. 2 All the wall specifications given in the table achieve a Severe duty rating. Refer to PERFORMANCE, Partition duty, for further details. 3 Laboratory tests were carried out on walls without bracing. Refer to DESIGN, Cross-bracing. 4 For partition heights up to 4200mm 94 C 70 should be used at head and base. For heights between 4200mm and 8000mm use 94 DC 60. For heights >8000mm use 94 EDC Brace centres reduced to 3300mm, refer to DESIGN, Cross bracing. 6 Board joints must be reinforced with Gyproc Paper Joint Tape for the quoted fire resistance periods to be achieved. Please refer to section for full details

5 Environmental Gyproc GypWall AUDIO is unsuitable for use in areas subject to continuously damp or humid conditions. Plasterboards are not suitable for use in temperatures above 49ºC but can be subjected to freezing conditions without risk of damage. Fire protection For reaction to fire classifications of Gyproc Plasterboards, please refer to section 2.1. Fire resistance The fire resistances given in Table 2 are for imperforate walls tested to BS 476: Part 8: 1972 or BS 476: Part 22: 1987 or assessments based on these tests. Sound insulation The R w ratings given in Table 2 are for imperforate partitions and have been tested in accordance with BS EN ISO 140-3: 1995, and rated in accordance with BS EN ISO 717-1: Airtightness is essential for optimum sound insulation. While most junctions will be sealed by standard jointing materials, gaps at the base of the wall and other small airpaths can be sealed using Gyproc Sealant. For specific applications, the sound insulation performance at certain frequencies may be important. Contact the Technical Sales Department for guidance. Other high performance acoustic wall specifications are possible with masonry construction lined with Gyproc plasterboards. Contact the Technical Sales Department for details. Gyproc GypWall AUDIO provides up to 120 minutes fire protection to structural steel dependant upon the lining specification and steel section factor. Table 3 gives the fire protection periods for different configurations. Table 3 Fire protection to structural steel... Partition duty strength and robustness All the wall specifications given in Table 2 achieve a Severe duty rating calculated in accordance with BS 5234: Parts 1 & 2: The rating is a measure of the ability of the wall to meet the requirements of four strength and robustness tests: door slam, soft body impact, hard body impact, and stiffness. The Duty grade relates to the level of activity in adjacent areas and the degree of care likely to be exercised in them. Severe duty is appropriate where the adjacent space is intensively used by the public and others with little incentive to exercise care. It could be prone to vandalism and abnormally rough use. The requirements are for walls complete with their surface finishes where these are part of the wall specification. Other optional tests may also apply. Using the duty of a particular wall the designer can select a wall for its area of use (with due consideration for fire, sound, or thermal requirements). Refer to Gyproc GypWall, PERFORMANCE, for further information on duty rating. 176

DESIGN Refer to section 3.1 Introduction, for general considerations. Maximum heights The criteria to determine the recommended maximum partition heights given in Table 2 are based on limiting deflections of L/240 and L/125 at 200Pa, together with criteria within BS 5234: Parts 1 & 2: Cross-bracing Laboratory tests were carried out on walls without bracing. The results, however, are a realistic representation to site conditions in which Gyproc Fixing Channel cross-braces are fitted at the recommended 3600mm maximum centres, provided that appropriate measures are taken on site to eliminate flanking sound transmission. Test evidence is provided by British Gypsum report ATR 1299 where site tests on a large Multiplex cinema wall achieved comparable performance to the equivalent specification tested in the laboratory without bracing. Some acoustic designers prefer the option of a resilient acoustic brace. The Gyproc GAB3 Acoustic Brace has been shown by test not to downgrade acoustic performance in laboratory conditions. As a result of the mechanics of this brace, however, fixing centres should be reduced from 3600mm to 3300mm, staggered by 1200mm. Maximum recommended wall heights will be reduced refer to Table 2. Cavity barriers Stone mineral wool cut neatly to fit across the cavity will form a suitable closure. Service penetrations Penetrations of fire resistant or sound insulating constructions for services need careful consideration to ensure that the performance of the element is not downgraded, and also that the services themselves do not act as the mechanism of fire spread or sound transmission. Deflection heads Performance details apply to fixed head constructions. If deflection is required to be accommodated, contact the Technical Sales Department for suitable detailing. Deflection heads, by definition, must be able to move and therefore, achieving an airtight seal is difficult. Inevitably, this will have a detrimental effect on the acoustic performance of any wall which incorporates deflection at the head. The approach shown in section 4.1 Gyproc GypWall STAGGERED could be considered to minimise loss of performance. In most cases, a suspended ceiling will also assist in minimising loss of performance. Fixing floor and ceiling channels The channels must be securely fixed with two rows of staggered fixings (fixings at 600mm maximum centres and 25mm in from the flange in each row). If the floor is uneven a 38mm thick timber sole plate equal to the width of the channel should be used. If the concrete or screeded floor is new, consideration should be given to the installation of a damp proof membrane between the floor surface and the channel or sole plate. 177

7 Control joints Control joints may be required in the partition to relieve stresses induced by expansion and contraction of the structure. The location of control joints is at the discretion of the specifier. It is recommended that they coincide with movement joints within the surrounding structure. Installation of services The installation of services should be carried out in accordance with all available standards, guidelines and recommendations. Cables should be protected by conduit, or other suitable precautions taken, to prevent abrasion when they pass through the metal frame. Switch boxes or socket outlets should be avoided - however, where this is not possible contact the Technical Sales Department for further guidance. Door openings Any openings will require careful detailing if the acoustic performance is to be maintained. Specialist heavy acoustic doorsets may require additional support. Contact the Technical Sales Department for guidance. Fixtures Lightweight fixtures can be made directly to the linings. Medium weight fixtures can be made to Gyproc Fixing Channel. Heavy fixtures should be made to independent framing with the extra supports installed at the frame erection stage. Ceramic tiling Ceramic tiles up to 12.5mm thick with a maximum weight of 32kg/m 2 can be applied using thin bed adhesives (usually 3mm thick). Stud centres will normally require closing down. Refer to section Ceramic tiling. Board finishing Refer to section Finishing Coat Plasters, section Jointing, and section Decorative effects. Estimating The estimated construction time is 0.5m 2 / man hour (nominal 6m high wall) ready for finishing. CONSTRUCTION DETAILS For detailing to suit project requirements, contact the Technical Sales Department. The stud bracing details are shown below (see Figs 1a and 1b).
