3 Name: Course: Global Literacy Mr. Irvan Date: Partner Practice As the population of Greece began growing around 1000 BC, villages started to band together to form strong trading centers. These groups of villages that banded together were called city-states. Since there were so many tall, rugged mountains separating parts of Greece, city-states stayed independent instead of joining as one country. Soon, hundreds of separate city-states had formed in ancient Greece. 1. What does the word population mean in the first sentence? 2. What is the main idea of the passage? 3. Circle the city-states of Sparta and Athens on the map. 4. Turn and Talk - Do you think they would share a similar culture, based on map evidence? Explain your thinking. 3

4 Name: Course: Global Literacy Mr. Irvan Date: Greece Day 4 Homework TO BE A CITIZEN OF A CITY-STATE: The ancient Greeks referred to themselves as citizens of their individual city-states. Each city-state (polis) had its own personality, goals, laws and customs. Ancient Greeks were very loyal to their city-state. The city-states had many things in common. They all believed in the same gods. They all spoke the same language. But if you asked an ancient Greek where he was from, he would not say, "I live in Greece." If he was from Sparta, he would say, "I am a Spartan." If he lived in Athens, he would say, "I am Athenian." The city-states might band together to fight a common foe. They also went to war with each other. Greece was not yet one country. Ancient Greece was a collection of Greek city-states. 1. Which vocabulary word tells you that ancient Greeks cared more about the city-state they were from than Greece in general? 2. What are two similarities shared by Greek city-states? 3. If you were from Sparta, would you fight to protect someone from Athens in war? Explain why or why not. 4

Each city-state had its own form of government. Some city-states, like Corinth, were ruled by kings. Some, like Sparta, were ruled by a small group of men (called an oligopoly). Athens started the world s first democracy, allowing its citizens to vote in government. Sometimes these city-states cooperated, but sometimes they went to war with each other. However, they would always come together to compete in the Olympics. Complete the chart below to show the types of governments found in different city- states. What can you infer about the importance of the Olympics from this statement? 5

Give two examples of Greek city- states separated by mountains. How does Greek geography differ from Egyptian geography? (Think about the land, climate, resources, etc.) Egypt was one unified (connected) country, and it was flat and easily traveled along the Nile River. Describe how geography led Greece to develop a different kind of government system. 6
