Deluxe Victorian Playhouse Assembly Manual Showing both the standard asphalt shingle assembly, and also the optional cedar shingle assembly...
Deluxe Victorian Playhouse Assembly Manual revised 11/22/00 Dear Customer, Thank you for your purchase of our playhouse. The craftsmanship and detail in this playhouse is unmatched. We are proud to bring this playhouse to you from our amish friends and neighbors who build such remarkable products. This manual is designed to simplify the assembly process, however we strongly recommend having an experienced carpenter involved in the project. Please read through the entire manual before starting!! The actual playhouse that was put together for this manual was 8 feet wide and 10 feet long. This manual can also be used for smaller or larger models. It took 2 men, 4 hours and 30 minutes, using the air tools shown in the picture, to assemble this playhouse. However, it will probably take you a little longer since it will be a new project for you. Take a deep breath and get at it, the satisfaction and enjoyment of this playhouse is only a few hours away. Have Fun!!!!! Remember, it is very important that you have a level site for your playhouse, and that the playhouse floor is perfectly level prior to setting the walls. You have purchased a product that consists of heavy, bulky pieces. With your purchase, you assume full responsibility to have the necessary manpower and/or equipment available to unload the items. You also agree that any damage that happens to the equipment, product, or individuals during the unloading process, or during the entire construction process, is your responsibility, and neither the seller, nor the manufacturer, will be held liable for any such damage. 21 Use this section only if you are installing cedar shingles on your playhouse... Note: Installing cedar shingles requires a roofer or carpenter that has cedar shingle experience. These instructions are written for an experienced person. Step Cedar 1: This is what the back of the playhouse will look like after you are finished with the next steps... Step Cedar 2: Start with placing 1-1x2 along the very top, keeping the top of the 1x2 flush with the point of the rafter. Step Cedar 3: Using 2 inch staples, attach the 1x2, keeping the end flush with the outside edge of the rafter. Need help? call page 20
Step Cedar 4: Measure across 24 inches from the end of the 1x2 to the first edge of the rafter and staple. Keep both ends of the 1x2 flush with the outside edge of the rafter. Install another 1x2 directly below the first one and staple. Continue stapling both 1x2 s the entire length of the building. Step Cedar 5: Use spacers provided to space the next 1x2 exactly 5 1/2 inches below the first 1x2. Step Cedar 6: Continue until the entire back is complete, keeping all 1x2 s 5 1/2 inches apart. Step Cedar 7: Space the last 1x2 halfway between the bottom of the last 1x2, and the top of the face board. Need help? call page 21
Step Cedar 8: These are the cedar sections, and the two aluminum valley pieces for the front of the playhouse... Step Cedar 9: Place roof section on the rafters. Step Cedar 10: Keep top of shingles flush with the point of the side trim. Position section so that the 1x2 s are centered on the valley rafter Step Cedar 11: Insure that the overhang is the same on the end and staple thru the shingles and into the rafter on every shingle row. Need help? call page 22
Step Cedar 12: Repeat the same steps on opposite side... Step Cedar 13: Step Cedar 14: Install doormer roof section, keeping the shingles flush with the top point and overhanging about 3/4 inch. DO NOT nail bottom of dormer section until flashing has been put in later... Step Cedar 15: Line up ends of 1x2 s on the valley rafter and butt against the other 1x2 s. Repeat on the other side of the dormer. Need help? call page 23
Step Cedar 16: Keep the wider side of the aluminum toward the main roof section. Clip off the corners of the flashing to allow it to slide better. Step Cedar 17: Insert flashing in valley, directly under the shingles and slowly slide up into the valley. Slide all the way up until 6 to 8 inches of flashing sticks up past the top of the valley. There should also be 4 to 6 inches sticking out of the bottom... Step Cedar 18: Trace the edge of the flashing with a pencil and pull down and cut off with a snips... Step Cedar 19: Using a pliers, (caution-the cut aluminum is VERY sharp), slide the flashing up until it is about 1 inch past the bottom of the shingles... Push valley down tight and nail shingles. Need help? call page 24
Step Cedar 20: This is what the valley should look like... Step Cedar 21: This shows the flashing sticking up past the peak. It also shows what the valley looks like from the inside... Step Cedar 22: Using a tin snips, cut down the center of the flashing. Step Cedar 23: Fold and staple flashing. Need help? call page 25
The bundles of cedar shingles are for the back side. Step Cedar 24: Start at the bottom left corner. Measure to allow shingles to overhang 1 inch. Measure the front end overhang and make the back overhang the same. Step Cedar 25: Staple, using 1 1/8 inch staples thru the shingles into the lathe. Continue with two layers across the entire back. Step Cedar 26: Measure up 8 1/2 inches from the bottom and snap a chalk line across the back. Need help? call page 26
Step Cedar 27: Using standard shingle application techniques, shingle the entire back. Step Cedar 28: Allow shingles to stick up past the peak. Step Cedar 29: Using a saw, cut the excess shingles off, keeping the top flush with the front shingles. Step Cedar 30: Cut a fancy design on 2 of the capping shingles and staple onto peak. Need help? call page 27
Step Cedar 31: Continue across to valley, keeping capping shingles 8 1/2 inches apart. Step Cedar 32: Break shingles at the valley and begin capping from the front of the dormer, repeating exactly what you did on the main roof. Step Cedar 33: Cut capping shingles on an angle and fit snug against capping on main roof. Need help? call page 28
Step Cedar 34: Begin at opposite end, and repeat. This is what the completed back should look like. Step Cedar 35: Go inside the playhouse and inserting one trim piece between each lathe strip. This step only applies to the front of the roof only. Staple as shown. This concludes the section on how to apply the cedar shingles... Need help? call page 29
After completing the roof, finish the playhouse as shown below... Step 59: Insert bottom siding piece into grooved piece at bottom of building as shown. Nail into floor around entire building. Make sure bottom piece fits tightly into grooved piece, as shown. Need help? call page 30
