3 Aims Holy Trinity is a learning community providing Catholic and Church of England education for all. Our mission is to celebrate the uniqueness of every person as a child of God. We seek to create an inclusive and supportive learning community, based on Gospel values, that nurtures each individual in order that they reach their full potential. Holy Trinity is quite unique being the only 3 to 16+ voluntary aided Catholic and Church of England school in the country. Spiritual life As a Catholic and Church of England school we offer a unique opportunity for students to explore their spiritual lives through the Christian faith as expressed in the Catholic and Church of England traditions. Students are encouraged to develop awareness of their spiritual needs and to take part in a range of experiences and activities to guide them. Christian worship lies at the heart of the school and is developed within the context of the students lives. Students attend worship every morning; this is underpinned by the liturgical calendar and coordinated by our chaplain. They are invited to create worship themes and participate in them, expressing their ideas through the arts and technical media. We are supported by clergy and parishes in both the Catholic and Church of England Barnsley deaneries. The Diocesan Youth Teams from both dioceses are actively involved with all our students, often leading them in annual retreat days. All our students are involved at some point in community projects linked to the Archbishop of York s Youth Trust Award. Holy Trinity has a full-time chaplaincy provision in school, available to all. The Mass is central to the Christian faith and is regularly celebrated in school through both traditions. Throughout their school lives, students are nurtured in their spiritual life exploring their relationship with God from where they are discovering God in the everyday. Ethos Holy Trinity is a caring school with a family atmosphere. We know our students well. This is reflected in our pastoral support systems which are widely recognised as being of the highest quality. We underpin our caring environment with high expectations of behaviour and achievement. Everyone is encouraged to treat each another with respect and courtesy, and our uniform and behaviour policies are strongly supported by students, parents and staff. We work hard to develop the potential of each individual and to ensure that our students are happy, safe and successful. We want all our students to be the best they can be, academically, socially, physically and spiritually. Religious Education Religious Education occupies a special place in the curriculum at Holy Trinity; all students are taught Religious Education for 10% of the time throughout the Primary Phase and it is taught to GCSE level throughout the Secondary Phase.

4 Assessment and reporting It is vitally important that children make the right amount of progress through all Key Stages. Holy Trinity strongly emphasises the continuous monitoring of student progress and class and subject teachers regularly assess and monitor every student s progress so that they can reach their potential. Students also assess and review their own progress and set targets for their future work, in consultation with their teachers. Parents receive regular progress reports and have access to an on-line facility, which provides them with up-to-date data on progress, attendance and attitude to learning. The school is committed to challenging all pupils to achieve their full academic potential and where barriers to learning are identified parents are invited into school to discuss strategies to remove those barriers. Students making the best progress are identified and celebrated. Parents evenings take place during the year for each year group and class where parents can discuss progress with class and subject teachers. Care Guidance and Support Holy Trinity inherits a very good reputation for the care, guidance and support it offers to students. Students respond well to the school s emphasis on repentance, forgiveness and reconciliation and we encourage the value and potential of all students by promoting an inclusive and supportive atmosphere. Our policies and practice reflect a desire to see that all students are encouraged to develop mutual respect, and ensure that positive relationships between students, staff, and parents form the basis of a successful and happy experience for all members of our school community. Our approach to this critically important part of our work with your children is detailed in the separate sheet at the back of this prospectus.

5 Organisation At Holy Trinity, we ensure that high quality learning and teaching is at the heart of our work with each individual student. We create a positive learning environment by: Offering a varied curriculum to cater for the learning styles and varied abilities and interests of our students Setting homework to consolidate and extend the learning which has taken place in the classroom Trying to establish links between teachers, parents and students to the benefit of the students Aiming to raise students self-esteem to enable them to be enquiring learners and to take growing responsibility for their own learning Encouraging the development of skills which will enable students to continue, and use, their learning beyond the classroom Encouraging students to be tolerant and understanding with respect for the rights, views and property of others. Homework We believe that children should be encouraged to extend their studies at home by following up their schoolwork or by preparing for some forthcoming work. Primary phase parents will receive communication regarding the expectations of homework from their child s class teacher. In the Secondary phase homework is an integral part of a child s work in school and is required in all year groups. Students should record all homework set in their Student Planner. Any concerns about homework can be written in the Student Planner and will be picked up quickly by the child s form tutor or subject teacher.

6 Uniform Students are expected to be clean and tidy at all times and to wear the school uniform. Parents will receive a detailed list of the uniform annually. Briefly the uniform is as follows: Secondary Phase Navy blue blazer with pocket logo Mid grey trousers or knee length skirt Grey long sleeved v neck jumper with logo (optional) White shirt, Clip-on school tie Grey or black socks Plain grey or plain black tights Plain black shoes Primary Phase Mid-grey trousers, shorts or skirt. Long or short sleeved white shirt Clip-on or elastic school tie Navy blue v-neck sweatshirt, jumper or cardigan with school logo. Black shoes Grey or white socks or grey tights. We would like the children to wear soft black plimsolls when inside so that we do not damage the carpets in the primary wing. Please Note: Jewellery (including earrings) and make up are not allowed in school. In your own interests please ensure that all clothing, particularly coats and shoes, are clearly marked with your child s name. Parental Visits Holy Trinity s policy on arrangements for parents to visit the school is set out in the separate sheet in the back of this prospectus Further Information Information about school policies, staff, governors and other aspects of the management of the school are either on the separate sheets in the back of this pack or may obtained from the Primary or Secondary reception desks or by contacting the school on

7 Session Times Primary phase Nursery - Children are able to start in the Nursery from the age of 3 years and 3 months. When the demand for places exceeds the number available, the School s Admission Policy will be implemented. Nursery morning session: 8.30am 11.30am Nursery afternoon session: 12.15pm 3.15pm The times of the Primary phase sessions are: Day: 9.00am to 3.15pm Lunch: Reception and Key Stage 1: 12.15pm to 1.15pm Key Stage 2: 12.30pm to 1.30pm Class teachers make every effort to form strong relationships with every child so that they can offer guidance and support for all. Admission to the building Children are not permitted into the classrooms until 8.50 am and the school cannot assume responsibility for the safety of those who arrive on the premises before then. Outside doors are unlocked at this time and children are allowed to go into their classrooms to start the morning activity. Parents should collect their children at 3.15 pm from their designated area.* Pupils in Reception to Year 2 will be handed over by staff. Pupils in Key Stage 2 will meet parents in the playground. As the primary and secondary phases finish at different times, the school will supervise, from 3.15 pm to 3.30 pm, those primary phase pupils whose parents would prefer to pick them up at 3.30 pm or who want them to go home with a secondary phase sibling. Please inform the school if you wish your child to be allowed to go home without an appropriate adult. Please note: Access to the Nursery / Foundation stage is down the main pathway, through the wooden gates outside Key Stage 1 and into the Early Years playground for both morning and afternoon sessions. Please be aware that the main drive is used as a bus route / vehicular access both before and after school and therefore it is not safe for children to cross the drive unsupervised. *Nursery: through the Foundation playground Reception: Foundation playground doors Classes 1,2,3,4: Key Stage 1 playground Classes 5,6,7,8: Junior playground Classes 9,10,11,12: Junior playground Secondary phase School starts at 9.00am and finishes at 3.30pm Monday to Friday The times of the Secondary phase sessions are: Morning: 9.00am to 12.30pm Lunch: 12.30pm to 1.30pm Afternoon: 1.30pm to 3.30pm Students are free to enter the building before school starts via the designated entrance leading from the playground.

8 Our new facilities are state of the art The Primary Phase has a purpose built Foundation Stage unit and two classrooms for each Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 year group as well as activity spaces. There are up to 470 pupils in the primary phase. In the secondary phase we have specialist facilities in Science, the Performing Arts, Physical Education and Technology, including post 16 facilities in Engineering. Holy Trinity has 140 students in each year group, a total of 700 secondary aged pupils.

9 Charging and remissions Policy Holy Trinity has adopted the Barnsley Local Authority Policy, which states that all education provided wholly or mainly during school hours shall be free. Whilst the Local Authority must provide free education within the demands of the law this can only be achieved within its finite resources. As a result it is clear that many valuable educational out of school experiences, which in the past have been funded by parents, will not take place in future unless funded by voluntary contributions or subsidised from another source. Whilst every effort is made to ensure that the costs of visits do not place too much of a financial burden on families, we do offer flexible payment plans. Please speak to any member of the Senior Leadership Team if you have any questions regarding educational visits. A charge is made for instrumental music tuition, which is available within school. Fees vary depending on the size of the group and the length of the lesson. Barnsley Music Services does have a supply of instruments that are available for hire at a minimal charge.

10 Parents If a child is happy at home, at school and at play this will be reflected in his/her attitude to learning. We therefore try to build supportive links at all times with parents and the home and try to inspire the confidence, co-operation and support of parents in all that the school does for their children. We want parents to feel involved in the life of the school and for communication to feel natural. We welcome contact with parents and we encourage parents who might have concerns about their children or about any aspect of the running of the school to contact us to make an appointment to see an appropriate member of staff. Our reception team are only too happy to help in this regard. PTA We have a Parents Association at Holy Trinity, which not only organises fund-raising events to provide extra equipment for school but also arranges activities through which parents, teachers and all other Friends of the School may get to know each other better. Pupil s voice is also taken into consideration when deciding on how to use these funds. If you would be interested in joining the Association, please contact the school.
