Overhand Passing & Catching CRITICAL ELEMENTS to mastering overhand passing and catching: PASSING: Fingertip control, proper balance, and distribution of body weight should be used for a more accurate pass. Weight should be shifted from the back to the front foot and you should step forward with the opposite leg of your throwing arm. Wrist should be snap on release. The speed of the receiver and the distance being passed will determine how hard the ball should be thrown. CATCHING: Players should catch the ball with two hands and fingertips should be spread for more control. The ball should not be allowed to make contact with the palms. Elbows should be flexed and the body relaxed to absorb the impact of the ball. Players should move forward to meet the ball and keep an eye on the ball as it comes into the hands. The player should be ready to shoot, dribble, or pass the ball. 1. Overhand Pass to Partner - Purpose: To improve passing & catching technique utilized in the game of team handball. Description: Two players will stand side by side on the sideline. Player A will give Player B a signal or yell Go. Player B will run towards the other sideline stopping halfway and will turnaround to receive the pass. Players can alternate passing and receiving until each has received 7-10 passes. Player B Player A Sideline 1 Sideline 2 2. Star Drill - Purpose: To work on effective passing & catching skills while in motion. Description: 5 cones are set up in a star pattern approximately meters apart. Teammates should be split up equally behind all of the cones. Start the drill at the tip of the star. Player A will take 3 steps towards a diagonal player (B) and make the first pass. At the same time Player B should be moving in the direction of the next diagonal (C). When Player B receives the ball, they should take 3 steps before they pass. Each player should follow their pass and go to the end of the same line they pass to. Drill can be modified to include other types of passes. A D 1 C B 2 3. Additional Drill: Hit the Ball Purpose: To work on throwing accuracy. Description: A big ball (such as a medicine ball) is placed on the centerline of the court. 2 goal lines and 2 rear lines are made using cones and the players are divided into 2 teams with an equal number of balls. The teams shoot at the medicine ball to make it roll over the opponent's goal line. The shooters are not allowed to run into the medicine ball area but each team can select a teammate who can return balls lying in the area. Source: E 4

5 III. Wrist Pass CRITICAL ELEMENTS to mastering the wrist pass: Feet should be shoulder width apart. Step laterally toward target. Raise and point elbow toward target. Transfer weight, extend elbow, and flip wrist. The ball should be pushed toward target with the thumb. 1. Wrist Pass to Partner - Purpose: To improve accuracy and technique on the wrist pass. Description: Partners will stand 4-6 meters apart and will turn their throwing side towards their partner. Players will complete a wrist pass back and forth to each other. Goal is to complete 10 passes. 4-6m Player A Player B 2. Circle Drill - Purpose: Will help players develop accuracy for wrist pass and overhand pass. Description: Players will form a circle 10 m in diameter. The ball can be passed across the circle or to the person standing next to you. When waiting to receive the ball, players should keep feet moving and have two hands up and ready to catch the ball. Players should execute proper footwork and upper body position while throwing the pass. Wrist passes can be made to the person next to you and overhand passes across the circle. 3. Additional Drill: Full Court Passing Drill - Purpose: To increase efficiency in the wrist pass (side pass), as well as other types of passing. Description: A and B facing same direction - jog length of hall exchanging passes. Types of passes: Two handed over head pass Standard shoulder pass - ensure full twist of body Repeat with shoulder pass - using other hand Use side pass Pass from behind the back Pass between the legs Use bounce pass Source: 1.html 5

6 IV. Shooting- Set Shot CRITICAL ELEMENTS to mastering the set shot: Players should run to receive the ball. Ball is held behind head with arm cocked to hide ball from goalie. Elbow should be flexed 90 degrees and you should lead with the elbow. Forearm whips forward and wrist snaps for more power. Follow through with the arm across the body. Non- shooting arm should remain forward for balance and to ward off defenders. Step forward on opposite foot. Momentum of shooter should always be toward or perpendicular to goal. 1. Target Practice - Purpose: To work on proper footwork and technique used for the set shot. Description: Players should start at a point 12 meters from a wall target. The player should toss the ball in front of them. 3 steps should be used to catch the ball and shoot a set shot. The player should aim for the corners of the target. The goal is to make 5 out of 8 attempts. 3steps 2. Combination Shooting Drill: Attack, Pass, and Shoot Purpose: To work on receiving a pass and preparing footwork for a set shot. Description: 1. Targets should be placed in the corners of the goal. 2. One line should be in the left backcourt position and one line should be in the right backcourt position 12 meters from the goal. 3. The coach will stand in the center backcourt position and act as a passer. 4. The first player in the right back court (A) runs to receive a pass from the coach (C), attacks the goal using three steps. They then will pass laterally to the left backcourt player (B). This player will receive the pass and attack the goal using three steps into their set shot from the 9 meter line. The two players will switch lines. Shooting line can be switched to the right side. A 12 m wall C B 12 m 3. Additional Drill: Purpose: Description: Player A passes the ball to Coach C who returns the pass. Player A takes the return pass on the run and shoots for goal. After shooting Player A takes up position as defender against Player B, who repeats the drill (i.e. pass to coach, take return pass and shoot). After shooting, Player B defends against next player (Player C). Player A returns to end of line. Repeat drill using variety of shots. Maintain high temp of shooting. Player B should pass to Coach and start moving as Player A shoots at goal. Source: 3.html 2 1 C A B 6

7 V. Shooting Wing Shot CRITICAL ELEMENTS to mastering the wing shot: Player should be in motion to receive the ball and should utilize their three steps toward 6 meter line. Plant the foot opposite of their shooting arm and drive shooting arm leg forward and up. The player should jump toward the 7 meter line and bring the ball to shooting position. The shoulders should be held perpendicular to the goal and locate goalie position. Player should then rotate shoulders to face the goal and should lead the shot with their elbow. Extend elbow, whip arm around and snap wrist for follow through. 1. Wing Shot Drill - Purpose: To work on footwork and angling for the wing shot. Description: The goal will be positioned away from the goal line at a 45 degree angle. The player will start in the left wing position (LW) where the 9 meter line meets the sideline. They will toss the ball ahead so they are moving forward when they catch the ball. The player will take 3 steps, jump towards the 7 meter line, and will aim for the outside corners. The drill can then be repeated with the goal in the correct position. LW 2. Combination Shooting Drill: Attack, Pass, and Shoot Purpose: To work on receiving a pass and preparing footwork for a wing shot. Description: 1. Targets should be placed in the corners of the goal. 2. One line should be in the left wing position and one line should be in the center backcourt position 12 meters from the goal. 3. The coach will stand in between the two lines and act as a passer. 4. The first player in the center back court (A) runs to receive a pass from the coach, attacks the goal using three steps. They then will pass laterally to the left wing player (B). This player will receive the pass and attack the goal using three steps into their wing shot from the 6 meter line. The two players will switch lines. Shooting line can be switched to the right wing. C A B 3. Additional Drill: Wing Shooting Drill Purpose: This is good for getting familiar with the floor space with a wing shot. Description: Start on the left wing if you are right handed and take three dribbles to the right and jump shoot at the goal. 1. Add a goalie, 2. Add a pass from a teammate, 3. Add pass and goalie, 4. Add a teammate, goalie, and 1 defender. Progress from more in the middle to more to the wing. Source: Diagram: LW 7

8 VI. Shooting Jump Shot CRITICAL ELEMENTS to mastering the jump shot: This shot involves the use of the shoulder throw (mechanics similar to set shot) in which the ball is released at the height of the jump. Momentum of the body should be directed at the goal. Plant the foot opposite of their shooting arm and drive shooting arm leg forward and up. Jumping in the air will allow the player to see the goal more clearly and determine direction of the shot. 1. Target Practice - Purpose: To work on proper footwork, timing, and technique used in the jump shot. Description: Players should start at a point 12 meters from a wall target. The player should toss the ball in front of them. 3 steps should be used to catch the ball and shoot a jump shot, landing as close to the target as possible. The player should aim for the corners of the target. The goal is to make 5 out of 8 attempts. wall 2. Jump Shot Footwork 12m Purpose: To work on the progression of footwork necessary to execute a solid jump shot. Description: 1. Start 5 meters from partner. Stand on right foot and throw to partner. 2. Stand one step from a line on the floor opposite your partner, who is 6 meters from the line. Take one step on left leg, jump over the line, and throw to your partner before landing. Step left, jump, throw. 3. Stand three steps away from the 6 meter line. Take three steps, jump over the line into the goal area, hang in the area, and shoot at the goal. Step left, right, left, jump, and shoot. 4. Start about 12 meters from the goal. Toss the ball slightly in front of you and catch it. Take three steps, jump as high as possible, hang, and shoot at corners of goal. 5. Stand parallel to partner 12 meters from the goal. Run to receive a pass from your partner at the 9 meter line. Catch the ball, take three steps, jump over the 6 meter line into the goal area. The player should hang as long as possible, look at the goalie, and aim the shot away from goalie. Additional Drill: Jump Shot Over Rope Purpose: To work on shooting at the highest point of the jump shot. Description: Practice the jump shot. Right- handed throwers should push off from the left foot and land on the left foot. Left- handed throwers do the opposite. When in the air, the body should be stretched and the throwing shoulder drawn back. Throw from the highest point of the jump. Suspend a rope so players must jump and shoot over the rope. 9 VII. Dribbling CRITICAL ELEMENTS to mastering the dribble: The dribble is used to advance the ball for purposes of attacking the goal or setting up a possible scoring play. There are three main situations in which the dribble is used - 1) fast break/open goal dribble, 2) player has already used 3 steps, 3) unable to pass or shoot. Ball should be kept at waist height and the player should push the ball in front of them. 1. Fast Break Dribble (full speed) - Purpose: To improve dribbling skills while attempting to run at full speed game pace. Description: Players will start on the endline and dribble full speed to center court. They will rest 10 seconds and then return to the endline at full speed. The players will repeat the drill 5 times using their dominant hand and 5 times using their non- dominant hand. Center line Endline 2. Dribble Shoot Relay - Purpose: To improve dribbling skills at a game pace, while simultaneously working on shooting. Description: Teams are divided evenly. A line is measured 6 meters from the wall. Each team lines up about meters from the wall. A 1 meter square is made into a target on the wall directly in front of the line. The first player from each group dribbles to the 6 meter line, shoots at the wall target, retrieves the rebound of the shot, and dribbles back to the next player in line. The first team to have each player hit the target three times wins the relay. 6m m 3. Additional Drill: Full Court Dribble Purpose: To work on general ball handling skills and control necessary for an effective dribble. Description: Each player jogs up / down hall with a ball : o Dribble ball - keeping head up o Repeat above - using alternate hand o Jog while passing ball from hand to hand around body o Throw ball up in air, jump up and catch in both hands o Throw ball up in front of body, catch behind back o Throw ball up from behind back, catch in front o Roll ball on ground, stop ball by kneeling on it - then repeat o Roll ball on ground, stop ball by sitting on it - then repeat o Roll ball on ground, stop ball with chest (in push up position - then repeat ) Source: 1.html 9
