2 Number Corner Tuesday Challenge 1 (cont.) August/September Finally, show your students the cardstock clocks you ve run for each of them. Distribute the clocks and ask youngsters to write their names at the top and trace the numbers very carefully. Before next Tuesday you may want to laminate the children s clocks, and, you ll also need to add cardstock or poster board hands. We suggest that you do these in two colors so that you can describe them as the (blue) long hand and the (yellow) short hand as you challenge children to set the time in future lessons. Cut poster board strips (for the minute hands) and strips (for the hour hands) on the paper cutter and then use scissors to cut the points. Use a sharp nail or school compass to punch a hole near the base of each hand as well as in the center of each clock in order to attach both hands with a brass fastener. These clocks will be used the entire year. Blackline NC.2 NAME Student Clock DATE Bridges in Mathematics, Grade 1 43
3 Number Corner Tuesday Challenge 2 (cont.) August/September Blackline NC.2 NAME Student Clock DATE Continue to have children move the hands on their clocks in this fashion all the way through the 12 hours. Then play Paper Clocks. Sing the song along with the tape as students move the hands on their clocks. The children will enjoy singing this song often. When the activity is finished, be sure to collect the student clocks in a basket where you can safely store them for future lessons. Bridges in Mathematics, Grade 1 45
4 August/September Number Corner Tuesday Challenge 4 (cont.) Blackline NC.6 September 70 Once everyone is back in class and settled, glue the cut strip to the temperature chart and record the appropriate number. You ll want to take a moment to record the time and the name of the month on the sheet as well. Can the children predict how the strips will look by Thanksgiving Day? by New Year s Day? Given that this is the fourth Tuesday in September, you may not be recording any more temperatures for this month. However, you will be collecting temperatures on many Tuesdays the rest of the year. If September does have five Tuesdays, you might want to revisit this temperature activity or one of the other Tuesday challenges described in the last few pages. 50 Bridges in Mathematics, Grade 1

6 Number Corner October Assessment & Student Support Assessment This month s assessment (page 119) takes the form of a check-up worksheet designed to be administered to all the students in your class at the same time. While worksheet assessments of this type are much faster to conduct than individual interviews, the information you get may not be as accurate, especially if students are usually encouraged to help each other with common tasks. Nevertheless, this assessment should give you some sense of how well children are handling some of the skills you ve been teaching this month telling time to the hour, counting objects that have been organized in tally formation, and using standard notation to write addition sentences. 7 Number Corner October Tuesday Challenge 1 TUESDAY S TIME, TALLY & TEMPERATURE Time to the Hour on the Student Clocks Overview In today s session children review telling time to the hour and begin collecting temperature data for October. Skills H exploring the numbers and their positions on a clock face H telling time to the hour H measuring the outdoor temperature H comparing temperatures: warmer or cooler H predicting future temperatures You ll need H Number cards, 1 12 (Use the cards you made for September s Time, Tally & Temperature Challenge 1, or see Blacklines NC 3 4 to make a new set.) H a ladybug from the bucket of bugs or a paper ladybug (Blackline NC 5) H student clocks H Hap Palmer tape set to play Paper Clocks H outdoor thermometer H Tuesday s Temperature chart (Blackline NC 6, run a new copy) H a strip of red construction paper H temperature chart your class kept in September In the first time challenge this month children re-create the human clock they made last month (see below). Hand out the number cards, one per student, and ask students holding the cards to arrange themselves in a circle with the top of the clock by the ladybug on the rug. Ask students to use the classroom clock to check their arrangement. Are the numbers sequenced correctly around the circle? Is the 6 across the circle from the 12? Is the 3 across from the 9? If the remaining children are eager to have a turn, hand out the cards again and repeat the activity. Bridges in Mathematics, Grade 1 91
8 October Number Corner Tuesday Challenge 1 (cont.) Distribute students clocks and have children set them to various times on the hour. Where do they need to point the long (minute) hand each time? Demonstrate how the minute hand would need to go all the way around the clock for the hour hand to move to the next number. If your wall clock has a second hand, have the children watch for 60 seconds. They ll be quite amazed to find that they would have to watch the second hand go around 60 times for an hour to pass. Finally, play Paper Clocks and encourage children to sing along as they set their clocks to the hour. TUESDAY S TIME, TALLY & TEMPERATURE After recess today, gather children around the outdoor thermometer. Give all of them a chance to look at the height of the mercury and show them how you re reading the numbers. Have one of the children cut a red strip to match the height of the mercury and glue it to a new. Compare it to the September chart. Is the temperature about the same or is it warmer or cooler than it was on the last Tuesday in September? Blackline NC.6 Blackline NC.6 September 70 October 68 It s about the same. 92 Bridges in Mathematics, Grade 1
9 Number Corner October Tuesday Challenge 2 TUESDAY S TIME, TALLY & TEMPERATURE Clocks & Time Cards A Matching Game Overview In this lesson, the teacher introduces a set of 12 clock cards that show time to the hour. After children have examined a few cards and determined the times, the teacher introduces a set of matching time cards. Children then play a game to match the 2 sets of cards, and finally display the pairs on the pocket chart. Students also take a temperature reading after morning recess. You ll need H Clock cards H Time cards H pocket chart H your key ring H outdoor thermometer H October temperature chart and a red construction paper strip Skills H telling time to the hour H matching clock faces to time cards H measuring the temperature H comparing temperature: warmer or cooler H predicting future temperatures Begin the session by showing children the clock cards. What time is it on each clock? Show them a couple of the time cards. Can they read what these cards say? 12:00 twelve o clock 2:00 two o clock Once they re familiar with the clock cards and time cards, hand out both sets to students and jingle your keys while they each find their match. Once they ve located their partners, have students bring the cards, a pair at a time, to the pocket chart. Bridges in Mathematics, Grade 1 93
10 October Number Corner Tuesday Challenge 2 (cont.) 3:00 three o clock 4:00 four o clock Is everything correct? Mix up the clocks and ask students who didn t get a turn earlier to match the pairs one more time in the pocket chart. TUESDAY S TIME, TALLY & TEMPERATURE It s Tuesday again, so gather the children outside after morning recess to read the thermometer and record the data on the temperature chart. Is this Tuesday warmer or cooler than last Tuesday? 94 Bridges in Mathematics, Grade 1

Have a student cut the strip to match the mercury and post the data on the October Temperature chart. Is this Tuesday warmer or cooler than the other Tuesdays have been this month? October Blackline NC If there are five Tuesdays in the month, think about your students. What is their area of greatest need? Review an activity that will help meet that need. 100 Bridges in Mathematics, Grade 1
15 Number Corner October October Assessment & Student Support ASSESSMENT 3 Check-Up Overview A check-up given to all your students helps assess their facility with the skills listed below. The 3 match games included help students who need to strengthen these skills. For use Near the end of the month You ll need H Assessment 3: check-up (Blackline NC A.10 A.11, run a class set) H a hard writing surface and a pencil for each child Skills assessed H telling time to the hour H recognizing groups of 5 H counting in chunks H recognizing and adding doubles and neighbors H writing number sentences October Assessment When you ve worked for weeks to establish a community of learners who help one another, a written test may feel threatening to some children. We explain to our students that we want them to complete this check-up by themselves. This lets us know if they need more help with a particular skill. After explaining the two sheets, spread the children out in the room. Make sure each student has a hard writing surface. Blackline NC A.10 NAME Assessment 3 check-up Time: What time is it? 16 October Number Corner October Assessment & Student Support (cont.) Strategies To Watch For If your students have had Bridges in Mathematics in kindergarten, recognizing time to the hour should be comfortable for most of them. How are they doing with tally groups? They ve worked on grouping popsicle sticks and playing tally bingo games in kindergarten and you ve presented additional challenges this month. Can they see groups of 5? Do they know that two groups of 5 make 10 or are they counting each group one by one? Keep an eye on the students whose skills you question. How about the doubles and neighbors? Can they see the quantities in each row of the ten-frames? Can they add those quantities? Can they write an accurate number sentence for each of the pictured addition combinations? Support for Targeted Children You ll find three match games pictured and described below to play at school with children who need more instruction in telling time to the hour, teen number tallying, and matching doubles and neighbors pictures to number sentences. In all of the games below, we have our targeted students cut up the playing cards and put them in an envelope. Send the games home once students know how to play the games well enough to teach their families. Once they ve prepared a set of cards for a needed skill, we work with the children to be certain they understand the game. We often start with the easier version and have children work in pairs or alone matching the cards. That way, they become familiar with the sets of cards before playing the challenging version. STUDENT SUPPORT 3A Clocks & Time Cards A Match Game You ll need for teaching the game H a set of Clocks Match Game clock cards and time cards borrowed from a student Each targeted student takes home H Clocks Match Game clock cards (Blackline NC A.12, run on cardstock, cut apart) H scissors 11 o clock H Clocks Match Game time cards (Blackline NC A.13, run on cardstock, cut apart, and store in an envelope with Clock cards) 120 Bridges in Mathematics, Grade 1

19 Number Corner November Continuing with Temperature TUESDAY S TIME, TALLY & TEMPERATURE The four Tuesday challenge lessons this month revolve around time, but you ll want to gather temperature data each week as well. We recommend that you continue with the temperature routine you introduced in September and October. Be sure to have a couple of helpers (or the whole group if that seems more appropriate) check the thermometer each Tuesday and enter the data on a new record sheet (Blackline NC 6). Is it warmer or cooler than last Tuesday? How do the November temperatures compare with October? September? 20 Number Corner November Tuesday Challenge 1 TUESDAY S TIME, TALLY & TEMPERATURE Tell the Time Overview In this activity, children tell time to the hour on their student clocks as they sing Hap Palmer s song. They work at the overhead then on their worksheets to practice this skill. You ll need H student clocks H Paper Clocks song H Tell the Time (Overhead NC 5) H Student Book, page 15 Skills H telling time to the hour H drawing hands on clock faces for a given time (to the hour) work SAMPLE Begin this lesson by distributing students clocks. Turn on the tape recorder and let them sing along with Hap Palmer as they turn the hands on their clocks. This song serves as an excellent review of time on the hour, and most children really enjoy singing it. Once the song is finished, collect the clocks and show students your Tell the Time overhead. Call on a student to come and draw in a minute hand pointing to the 12 and an hour hand pointing to an other number on the first clock. Once the hands are drawn, ask children if they can tell which is the short hand and which is the long hand. If not, have your volunteer make any needed adjustments. What time does the clock show? Record it in the box below the clock. Overhead NC.5 Tell the Time Draw a long hand pointing to the 12. Draw a short hand pointing to one of the other numbers. Finally, hand out copies of the student worksheet and ask children to draw the hands on each clock and write the time underneath. Circulate and help as needed. If your students don t have individual student books, you may want to collect these papers and save them in work folders as another indication of student progress. Blackline NC.2 NAME Robbie 11/9 Student Clock DATE Teacher When the minute hand has gone halfway around the clock and the hour hand has moved halfway between 2 numbers, we say it s half past. Right now, our clocks show half past 4. Children I did it. Me too. My little hand keeps falling down. I ll have to hold onto it. Maybe you should make that fastener tighter on the back. Teacher Good job, everybody! Can you make your clocks say half past 8? Continue in this manner for a few minutes working with time to the half hour. As children become comfortable with the Hour or Bust! game that s in the Bridges Work Places, many will realize that their clocks picture five minute intervals, and they ll figure out that when the minute hand is on the 6, thirty minutes have passed. 140 Bridges in Mathematics, Grade 1
23 November Number Corner Tuesday Challenge 4 TUESDAY S TIME, TALLY & TEMPERATURE Clocks & Cards A Match Game Overview The teacher leads children in a review of setting time to the half hour on their student clocks and then hands out the half past clock and time cards for a round or two of a match game. You ll need H student clocks H Half Hour Clocks H Half Hour time cards H your key ring or some other auditory signal H pocket chart Skills H reading half hour time cards and setting clocks to the indicated time H matching half hour clock faces and time cards Begin today s session with a quick review of time to the half hour using your Half Hour Clocks and student clocks. Hold up one clock card at a time and have children set their clocks to match. Then switch to the time cards. Can children set their clocks to the correct time that way? Finally, hand out the Half Hour Clocks and time cards and jingle your keys while children find the correct matches.
