MAP/100P - Front View The LEDs associated with the failed hard disk drive will usually not be lit or flashing. However, there are some instances where a failed hard disk drive will have a lit or flashing LED. 3 Recovering from a Single Hard Disk Drive Failure To recover from a hard disk drive failure: Recovering from a Single Hard Disk Drive Failure AT T E NT ION OBSERVE PR ECAUTIONS FOR HANDLING ELECTROSTATIC SENSIT IVE DEVICES 1. Identify the failed hard disk drive. 2. Remove the failed hard disk drive. NOTE: If you removed the wrong hard disk drive, the system will crash immediately. See Recovering from Removing the Wrong Hard Disk Drive. 3. Install a new hard disk drive. The system should automatically rebuild the hard disk drive. The hard disk drive LED will flash to indicate the rebuild activity. 4. If the system does not automatically rebuild the hard disk drive, contact your remote maintenance center. Procedure completed. 4 Recovering from a Multiple Hard Disk Drive Failure Recovering from a Multiple Hard Disk Drive Failure To attempt to recover from multiple hard disk drives being listed as DED: NOTE: If this procedure fails, the system will have to be restored from backup. 1. Reboot the system. 2. Press ALT+R after the POST. The system displays the RAID Controller Settings Main Menu. 3. Select: Tools The system displays a diagram showing all of the drives and there status. Two or more of the drives will be marked DED. NOTE: If only one drive, or no drives, is marked DED, exit the utility by pressing ESCAPE. The system should successfully boot. CAUTION: Do not complete Step 4 on the first hard disk drive to have failed. Continue, press PAGE DOWN. MAP/100P RAID System Recovery - 4 Issue 2

For one of the hard disk drives marked DED, select: Make Online The system displays the following message: Recovering from a Multiple Hard Disk Drive Failure This procedure could corrupt system data. Do you want to continue? Yes No If the system is unable to complete this step for the hard disk drives: a. Check the RAID cable connectivity. b. Check the hard disk drive carriage power cable connectivity. c. If both cables are properly connected, contact your remote maintenance center. 5. Select: Yes 6. Repeat Step 4 and Step 5 for each hard disk drive, other than the first hard disk drive to fail, marked DED. 7. Press ESCAPE. Continue, press PAGE DOWN. MAP/100P RAID System Recovery - 5 Issue 2

7 Recovering from Removing the Wrong Hard Disk Drive Recovering from Removing the Wrong Hard Disk Drive If, while attempting to replace a failed hard disk drive, you remove the wrong hard disk drive, the system will crash. To recover from removing the wrong hard disk drive: 1. Remove power from the system. 2. Replace the incorrectly removed hard disk drive. 3. Remove the failed hard disk drive. 4. Place the empty hard disk drive assembly bracket back into the MAP/100P. NOTE: Do not install the replacement hard disk drive at this point. 5. Reboot the system. 6. Press ALT-R after the POST. The system displays the RAID Controller Settings Main Menu. 7. Select: Tools Continue, press PAGE DOWN. MAP/100P RAID System Recovery - 7 Issue 2

8 Recovering from Removing the Wrong Hard Disk Drive The system displays a diagram showing all of the drives and there status. Two or more of the drives will be marked DED. NOTE: If the hard disk drive you incorrectly removed is not marked DED, exit the utility by pressing ESCAPE. The system should successfully boot. 8. Select: Make Online The system displays the following message: This procedure could corrupt system data. Do you want to continue? Yes No 9. Select: Yes 10. Press ESCAPE. 11. Reboot the system. 9 Recovering from Removing the Wrong Hard Disk Drive 12. Remove the empty hard disk drive assembly bracket you inserted in Step Install a new hard disk drive. The system should automatically rebuild the hard disk drive. The hard disk drive LED will flash to indicate the rebuild activity. 14.
