2 BME at Eindhoven Biomedical Engineering education for a research environment. Bachelor Biomedical Engineering. Master Medical Engineering (ME). Four specific courses are required for admission to the postgraduate training of clinical physicist. Master Biomedical Engineering (BME). Three tracks.

3 BME Master Tracks 1. Biomechanics and Tissue Engineering. 2. Molecular Bioengineering and Molecular Imaging. 3. Biomedical Imaging and Modeling.

4 University Education (WO) in the Netherlands The final qualifications are based on requirements made by the academic discipline, the international academic practice and, if applicable to the course, the relevant practice in the prospective professional field. A University Bachelor possesses the qualifications that allow access to a minimum of one further degree course at the University master s level as well as the option to enter the labor market.

5 University Education (WO) in the Netherlands Almost every Dutch University student takes a Master after his Bachelor degree. A University Master possesses the qualification to conduct independent academic research or to solve multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary questions in a professional practice for which the University degree is required or useful.

6 University of Professional Education (HBO; Formerly School of Higher Vocational Education) Is Similar to University of Applied Sciences

7 University of Professional Education (HBO) The final qualifications are partly based on the professional profiles and/or professional competencies drawn up by or in conjunction with the relevant professional field. A HBO Bachelor is qualified at the level of a starting professional in a specific profession or related professional field for which a degree of HBO is required or useful.

8 University of Professional Education (HBO) A HBO Master is qualified at the level of an independent and/or managing professional in a particular profession or professional field, or the level required to function adequately in a multidisciplinary environment in which a degree from a HBO is required or useful.

9 Objectives of Our University BME Curriculum Develop the ability of students to: - Integrate and synthesize knowledge of mathematics, physics, and chemistry in solving problems in the biomedical field. - Function in Research&Development environment - Transform the solution into a design. - Keep up with new developments. - Communicate. Our objectives comply with ABET requirements.

10 Language Education in principle in Dutch. Master phase education: All material in English. Lectures in English if foreign student(s) present. Reports and presentations generally in English. As of , all teaching material of the Bachelor phase will be in English.

11 Student Mobility While Enrolled in Eindhoven Students are encouraged to collaborate with students from other universities in the Netherlands and abroad. Students may do their internships in other countries, provided a standing collaboration exists between faculties on both sides.

12 Student Mobility Within the Netherlands Mobility between programs if courses fit. ECTS system in effect. Free mobility towards BME Master: University BME Bachelor degree (Twente). Bachelor of Life Science & Technology (Delft). Mobility after completion of 30 ECTS transition program. Many engineering disciplines. A Bachelor is not awarded

14 Mobility from HBO to University BME Master program Admission possible for bachelors from: Electrotechnology. Physics. Chemistry. Mechanical Engineering. Biometrics. Higher Laboratory Education.

15 Aim of Transition Year Test academic level of candidate. Abstraction level. Thinking in models. Pace of acquiring knowledge. Skills. DCL (specific of our program) has already been adapted in part by HBO.

16 HBO to University Transition Year The transition year comprises 40 ECTS and has to be finished (including reexaminations) within 3 trimesters. No exceptions. 8 Courses (lectures) of 3 ECTS. First and second trimester. 5 compulsory, 3 electives. 4 skills labs of 4 ECTS. Third trimester.

21 HBO to University Transition Year To be completed in maximally one year Upon successful completion of the transition program, students are admitted to the Master program. Note: A bachelor degree from our University is NOT obtained.

22 International Student Mobility International Bachelor and Master degrees are evaluated at the national level (NUFFIC). Our applications are generally from Asia. Usually equivalent of 2 years Dutch Bachelor. If general level requirements are met, often: Lack of life sciences. Narrow education.

23 International Student Mobility Some candidates would probably qualify for a specific Master track. Dutch law prohibits acceptance within a single Master track. Transition programs for foreign Bachelors with a level evaluated at an equivalents of 3 years Dutch Bachelor are under development.

24 New Developments At Eindhoven University of Technology a so-called Broad Bachelor program is under development, with a major and minor structure. This will allow for more flexibility and mobility for our students to move from one discipline to another.

25 Conclusions Harmonization of (BME) Engineering programs results in increased student mobility. The more specific professional qualifications are required, as for instance in clinical engineering, the less flexible the system may (have to) be.
