Why ArchiMate 2.0? What is the added value? How does it compare to TOGAF 9.1? An Enterprise Architecture Capability TOGAF 9.1 provides a method TOGAF 9.1 provides a way of managing portfolios, programmes and projects TOGAF 9.1 supports strategies TOGAF 9.1 supports Strategic and Business Planning SLIDE 7 of 76
Why ArchiMate 2.0? What is the added value? How does it compare to TOGAF 9.1? An Enterprise Architecture Capability TOGAF 9.1 initiates an architecture cycle with a business problem and a vision to solve that problem with a solution The business problem is solved by a TOGAF 9.1 architecture project TOGAF 9.1 creates projects TOGAF 9.1 efficiency is measured bay a set of KPIs TOGAF 9.1 monitors the results of its own efforts in terms of a business outcome or realized KPI s SLIDE 8 of 76
TOGAF 9.1 ADM and Enterprise Architecture Defining and maintaining the architecture framework Developping the architectures Defining and governing projects portfolios SLIDE 9 of 76
Why ArchiMate 2.0? What is the added value? How does it compare to TOGAF 9.1? An Enterprise Architecture Capability ArchiMate 2.0 meets the need for a visual modeling language for Enterprise Architects ArchiMate 2.0 also provides a content framework It is specifically designed to model the architecture domains (Business, Data, Application, Technology) Languages like UML and BPMN are ideal for modeling solutions However they do not scale well to Enterprise Architecture SLIDE 10 of 76
Why ArchiMate 2.0? What is the added value? How does it compare to TOGAF 9.1? An Enterprise Architecture Capability By comparison ArchiMate 2.0 is lightweight and scalable such that ArchiMate 2.0 enables the Enterprise Architect to articulate enterprise architecture so that the business can understand the future state SLIDE 11 of 76
ArchiMate 2.0 and Enterprise Architecture The role of the ArchiMate standard is to provide language to represent enterprise architectures over time including Their Motivation And Rationale Their Design Their Transformation Their Migration Planning The ArchiMate modeling language Provides a uniform representation for diagrams that describe EA Offers an integrated approach to describe and visualize the different architecture domains SLIDE 12 of 76
What using ArchiMate 2.0 with UML and BPMN means.. Formally relating ArchiMate with UML & BPMN will help business teams to accelerate enterprise transformation using Enterprise Architecture UML is an extremely important standard used in a broad range of analysis, planning and development efforts by the IT world Similarly BPMN is used by business architects and business teams to model business processes and provide the business operations with easy to understand business processes Using ArchiMate and Enterprise Architecture SOA will benefit the business services teams to influence process and software development and enable them to integrate their capability with UML & BPMN models UML users will be able to produce enterprise-level views of their work for executive management and other stakeholders, to produce skeletal software architectures from enterprise-level models Systems and business architects will be able to evaluate alignment between enterprise and software architectures SLIDE 13 of 76

ArchiMate ArchiMate is The Open Group Standard for architecture modeling open and independent modeling language for enterprise architecture supported by various tool vendors and consulting firms Provides a notation to enable enterprise architects to describe, analyze, and visualize the relationships among architectural domains Offers a common language for describing the construction and operation of business processes organizational structures information flows IT systems technical infrastructure SLIDE 16 of 76
Language Structure ArchiMate is a modeling language that Addresses the issue of consistent alignment Facilitates a coherent modeling of enterprise architectures Allows unambiguous specification and description of enterprise architecture s components relationships SLIDE 17 of 76
Language Structure - Design Approach Design of the ArchiMate language started from relatively generic concepts SLIDE 18 of 76
Language Structure - Design Approach Design of the ArchiMate language started from relatively generic concepts Developed the ArchiMate language to focus on the Enterprise Architecture challenges SLIDE 19 of 76
Language Structure - Design Approach Developed the ArchiMate language to focus on the Enterprise Architecture challenges Design of the ArchiMate language started from relatively generic concepts These have been specialized towards application at different architectural layers - TOGAF domains Design Driven Enterprise Architecture Approach SLIDE 20 of 76
Language Structure - Design Approach The most important design constraints for the ArchiMate language are To maximize the usage So it has been explicitly designed to be as small as possible Highly useable for most EA modelling tasks ArchiMate has been limited to the concepts that suffice for modeling the proverbial 80% of practical cases The core language consists of three main types of elements Active Structure elements Passive Structure elements Behaviour elements SLIDE 21 of 76
Core Concepts Have been inspired by natural language Sentences have a subject - active structure a verb - behavior object - passive structure Reflects the basic structure of all human languages even back to our caveman pictures! SLIDE 22 of 76

ArchiMate definition - Viewpoints ArchiMate has a very extensive Viewpoint Classification 27 in all!! These distinguish ArchiMate from a simple modeling notation Viewpoints are a means to focus on particular aspects of the architecture These aspects are determined by the concerns of a stakeholder with whom communication takes place What should be visible from a specific viewpoint is dependent on a stakeholder s concerns Main Concepts and Relationships Introductory Viewpoint TOGAF Domains SLIDE 43 of 76

Motivation Extension The Motivation extension of ArchiMate adds motivational concepts such as Goal Principle Requirement Addresses the way the enterprise architecture is aligned to its context, as described by motivational elements A motivational element - an element that provides the context or reason lying behind the architecture of an enterprise Goals and principles have to be translated into requirements before core elements can be assigned that realize them Services Processes Applications SLIDE 60 of 76
Implementation and Migration Extension The Implementation and Migration extension of ArchiMate adds concepts to support the late ADM phases, related to architecture Implementation migration These ADM phases are Phase E (Opportunities and Solutions) Phase F (Migration Planning) Phase G (Implementation Governance) This extension includes concepts for modeling implementation programs projects to support management of Programs Portfolio projects a plateau concept to support migration planning SLIDE 61 of 76
ArchiMate Viewpoints & TOGAF ArchiMate 2.0 complements TOGAF in that it provides a vendor-independent set of concepts that helps to create a model which can be depicted in the form of TOGAF views and is consistent Integrated The structure of the core ArchiMate language closely corresponds with the three main architectures as addressed in the TOGAF ADM Some of the viewpoints defined in TOGAF cannot easily be mapped onto ArchiMate viewpoints ArchiMate does support the concepts addressed in these viewpoints Although corresponding viewpoints from ArchiMate and TOGAF do not necessarily have identical coverage many viewpoints from both methods address largely the same issues SLIDE 62 of 76
ArchiMate Viewpoints & TOGAF SLIDE 63 of 76
ArchiMate & TOGAF Matching Viewpoints SLIDE 64 of 76
ArchiMate and TOGAF TOGAF 9.1 has more detailed viewpoints and therefore adds value to ArchiMate 2.0 TOGAF 9.1 and ArchiMate 2.0 can easily be used in conjunction appear to cover much of the same ground although with some differences in scope and approach Main issue between the two frameworks in the distinction between Logical and Physical But other concepts do match quite well This is caused by the fact that ArchiMate and TOGAF Architecture Content Framework are coming from different Architecture traditions SLIDE 65 of 76
