2 Curriculum Common Core Standards The Common Core State Standards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them.

3 Homework Expectations Nightly homework is to reinforce concepts taught and to allow extra practice time with one on one adult help! The homework is very important to your child s reading and math development. The homework sheet needs an adult signature each night otherwise your child has not completed the homework. Please only sign the homework sheet if your child has done the work! If there is a difficult night please write a note on the homework sheet and you can complete the work the following night or us with problems/concerns.

4 This year the spelling words will follow the weekly phonetic rule. You will find the week s spelling words on the bottom of the homework sheet each week. A pretest is given on Monday and if your child has 100% he/she will be given the option of taking a challenge list instead of the regular list found on the homework sheet. The challenge note will come home on Monday attached to the homework sheet along with the 100% pretest. It is your decision whether your child takes the regular words or the challenge words for the test on Friday. The homework sheet also gives important reminders about gym days (gym shoes required) and media center days (books need to be returned).

5 Please leave the homework sheet in the nightly folder and return to school each day. Homework PINK sheets: Sight word log Sight words are an important part of your child s reading success. The expectation is that you will keep all the sight words in one place and each night practice the new weekly words and some of the older sight words. Each week there will be 6 new sight words. There are 220 kindergarten and first grade sight words in all! It is vitally important to practice the new words and review the older words every night. Please leave the pink sight word log in the homework folder and return to school, signed, each day.

6 Other Weekly homework Each Monday, your child will bring home a math check list page. Please have your child do the oral math activities and initial each activity. Return the check list on Tuesday. Purple sight word sentences. Each Tuesday, your child will bring home a sheet with six purple sentences. These are another way to reinforce sight words and improve your child s reading fluency and comprehension. Please cut these sentences apart, practice them often, and keep them in a safe place. Each week 6 new purple sentences will come home on Tuesday. Make-a-word activity is part of Wednesday night s homework. This is one way to reinforce the phonics rule and practice the spelling words for the week. Keep the letters at home but return the empty zip lock baggie the next day.

7 Friday Folders On Friday, the homework folder will not come home. A Friday folder will come home instead. Inside you will find all your child s weekly work, school/community handouts, and a weekly first grade newsletter. On the back of the newsletter you will find the 6 new sight words for the following week. Please read the newsletter and then cut the words off the back and add them to your sight word pile and keep them all in a safe place. On Thursday your child will be tested on those same 6 sight words from the newsletter and will bring a blue set of these words home. A stamp next to the word means they knew the word when tested. Please add these to the sight word pile you are keeping. After reading the newsletter, take all the papers out, sign next to the appropriate date and return the empty folder on Monday.
