General Objectives: To acquaint the pupil with importance of water conservation. Instructional Objectives: 1. Knowledge: The pupil acquires the knowledge of importance of water conservation. 2. Understanding: The pupil develops an understanding of identifying different ways to save water. 3. Application: The pupil applies gained knowledge and understanding of importance of water conservation, in new and unfamiliar situations. 4. Skill: The pupil develops the skill of using different ways to save water. Teaching Aids: A handout of the story, Medak the frog. Teachers Resource on tips to save water. Method: Inductive Method Steps to be followed for the Lesson. Step 1: The importance of water conservation may be introduced to the children through a story Medak the frog. The teacher reads out the story of Medak the frog and initiates a discussion with the students on the following points: Where does Medak find the water he drinks? (The discussion leads to sources of water) What happens to India after Medak the frog drinks all the water? (a discussion on water scarcity) 1

2 What happens after Medak laughs and lets out all the water? (a discussion on flood situation / returning back to normal conditions after drought). Step 2: The children are also made to think about the effects of water scarcity on the environment through the following questions asked by the teacher: 1) Have you ever- experienced water shortage in your house or when you went to your village for holidays? If so, what was it like? (2) What was the cause of the shortage? (3) What did you do to conserve water? (4) If students have not experienced a water shortage, the Teacher will ask them what they think they would have to do in such a situation? (5) Think of some ways to save/ conserve water. The teacher collects students responses on the blackboard and also provides them with suggestions, if any of them have not come up in the discussion. Assessment POSTER: The students may be asked to make a poster on Save Water. Attachments (See next page) 2

3 Story -- Medak the Frog India is a beautiful country. The early inhabitants of India referred to India as a land, where the rivers, lakes, ponds shimmered in many shades of blue. It was also a green land where many trees grew. The legend tells of a frog called Medak, who lived in India. The frog was always thirsty. One morning, Medak woke up feeling very thirsty. In fact, he was so thirsty that he started drinking and drinking and drinking until he drank up all the water of the rivers, streams, lakes, ponds, wells and springs. He drank so much that he left the land without a drop of fresh water. As you can imagine, the land just got drier and drier until there was nothing left but desert. The trees lost all their leaves. Since there was no water, all the animals were very thirsty. It looked as though Medak would be the only one to survive the terrible drought. His belly had enough water in it to last him for years! One day, the wise old jackal announced that he had an answer to the problem. His idea was to make Medak the frog laugh so that he would cough up all the water he had drunk. Then all the rivers, streams, lakes, pond, wells and springs would fill up again with water. The animals all agreed that it was a very good idea. Peacock a very proud and determined bird was the first to try to make Medak laugh. Peacock began telling funny stories of his early days as a chick. He described his attempts to fly like other birds and how he fell into a hole and was covered with dirt and how nobody could recognize him. Peacock story was so funny that everyone split their sides laughing. Everyone laughed, except Medak the frog. Then it was the turn of the Deer The Deer started leaping and bouncing around like a ball. He leapt high in the air and did somersaults like a circus acrobat. The deer s antics soon had all the animals clapping and cheering. Well done, well done! they shouted. But it did not seem funny to Medak. Worn out by so much leaping and jumping around, the Deer let the Crane take over. Crane started imitating the clown. He made some really funny faces and contorted his long neck. The animals laughed looking at the Crane s twists and turns. But it was to no avail. 3

4 The fact is, Medak the frog looked as bored as he could be and there wasn t a flicker of a smile on his lips. The animals were now desperate. They had no idea how to make Medak laugh. They knew that none of them would survive long without water. Soon, they started talking and cribbing among themselves about the best way to get Medak laugh. Then it was the turn of the Mongoose with his long face, short legs and long tapering tail. The mongoose began a snake dance. He was a wonderful dancer. He stretched out and shriveled up like a party streamer. Medak the frog gazed attentively at him. But he didn t even let out a giggle. It was just then, when the mongoose was really getting his snake routine, that he got so close to the frog that the tip of his tail tickled Medak s belly. Ha, ha, ha.. laughed Medak. Ha, ha, ha.. Stop it! You re tickling me! begged the frog. Finally, Medak the frog burst into side- splitting laughter. He laughed so hard that water started pouring out of his mouth. Soon it became a torrent. And that was how the rivers, ponds, lakes, streams, springs and wells got filled up again. The sap rose in the trees and soon they were covered with green leaves. India went back to being as beautiful as it had always been. Medak the frog shrank and shrank as the water gushed out of his mouth. He ended up being just this tiny. That s why in the olden days, it was believed by many, that every time there is a flood it s because Medak the frog is having a good laugh. 4

5 Teachers Resource Conservation of water There are things you can do to help make sure that there will always be water for everyone: 1. Instead of taking showers use bucket for bathing. 2. When you turn on the tap, do not turn it on full flow but maintain a slow flow. 3. While brushing your teeth, close the tap and do not let the water run. This will save water. The same should be kept in mind while washing clothes or dishes. 4. A lot of water is lost from dripping taps. Check for leaked taps and repair them at the earliest. 5. When you fill a glass of drinking water, take only as much as you need. 6. If you store water in the house, use the unused stored water for soaking clothes, mopping the floors, watering the plants etc. Wash vegetables, fruits, etc. in a bowl of water, rather than under running water. 7. Keep a large bucket in the kitchen and pour water used for washing food items into this. This could be used for watering plants. 8. Collect and store as much rain- water as possible. Also known as rain water harvesting. 9. Since the rate of evaporation is less in the early morning and late evening, it is advisable to water the garden then. Loss of water by evaporation can be reduced. 10. Remove weeds from your garden. This helps to cut down on excess water consumption. 11. If you have a stream or pond near your home, spend few hours cleaning up the area with the help of your community. 12. Tell all your friends and family about how important it is to save water. Conserving water means we will have enough water for everyone. 5
