Students who successfully complete the program and have sufficient work experience will be eligible to write examinations from nationally recognized certification boards such as the Canadian Addiction Counsellors Certification Federation or the First Nations Wellness/Addictions Counsellor Certification Board. The Addiction Services Worker graduate will work with communities and organizations to set up and operate programs forcused on reducing high levels of alcohol, drug and solvent abuse among onreserve populations. Program participants will be introduced to three key areas of study: prevention, intervention and aftercare. Strong individuals with a broad understanding of mental health are needed to help deal with issues of grief and loss, violence and abuse, addictions, depression and suicide. This program is based on the Aboriginal belief in the interconnection of mind, body, spirit and emotions. The Mental Health Program graduate is a front line worker with the skills to find and fill the gaps in the current support system in order to support the well being of Aboriginal people. The approach taken in the program is to help students understand the history of the people and issues and to use traditional and culturally relevant means of meeting challenges. A diploma in Mental Health from Northern Lakes College will introduce the student to courses in history, human development, interpersonal communications, family and group dynamics, disease and disorder and counseling. The theory is followed by experiential study in order to carry out the activity needed to bring about positive change for all people.
