SUSTAINABILITY CULTURE INDICATOR

Does your organisation have a culture of sustainability? Organisations are increasingly realising the benefits of developing a sustainability focus. To do so, it is vital that they inspire and engage their people to make sustainability a priority in their decisions and actions. The Sustainability Culture Indicator (SCI) is an employee survey which measures the extent to which sustainability is embedded within the culture of an organisation. The importance of measuring sustainability in the culture The first step in any attempt to engage people in sustainability is to find out where they are at currently. This allows you to Set a baseline against which efforts to further embed sustainability can be evaluated Target efforts and resources to address the key barriers which prevent your people from embracing sustainability Identify opportunities to build on current levels of sustainability commitment and engagement Evaluate the impact of sustainability initiatives What is Interface doing for the environment? Without the engagement of all stakeholders, the answer would be nothing Ray Anderson, Chairman of Interface Inc, from Confessions of a Radical Industrialist

What does the SCI measure? The SCI consists of 50 items which measure key enablers of sustainability, and their resulting behaviours. Organisational Enablers of Sustainability Commitment to sustainability Sustainability leadership Activities to embed sustainability Job responsibilities Rewards and recognition Innovation Processes Facilities Individual Enablers of Sustainability Responsibility for sustainability Perceived mandate/support Beliefs about sustainability Sustainability knowledge Perceived control over sustainability issues Behaviours at work Behaviours outside work Comments/Qualitative items Research-based The SCI is based on sound research into the elements which define a culture of sustainability. Each of the organisational enablers measured are critical for creating an environment which supports people to embrace sustainability. The individual enablers in the SCI are unique to this tool, and based on research into the psychological and attitudinal predictors of sustainable behaviour. High levels of these enablers is related to strong engagement with sustainability and more frequently performed sustainable behaviours. As a result, the output of the SCI allows you to identify which aspects of the organisation are supporting a culture of sustainability, and which aspects are holding you back.

Comprehensive Report The SCI report presents Clear summary data and conclusions Results presented against models of change and explanations of the relevance. Discussion of individual factors as they relate to research on sustainability and culture Practical, actionable ideas for further engaging employees with the organisation s sustainability goals Summary and qualitative analysis of the written comments Individual Enablers Sustainability know ledge Perceived support Perceived control Beliefs about sustainability Responsibility for sustainability Organisational Enablers Facilities Processes Innovation Rew ards and recognition Job responsibilities Activities to promote sustainability Sustainability leadership Commitment to sustainability Individual and Organisational Enablers Using the SCI at a glance 50-item web-based survey which can be completed by all of your employees, or a representative sample. Customisable we can make it more specific to your organisation, or even brand it for you. Awake supports the entire survey process, including questionnaire customisation, online survey delivery, analysis, reporting and presentation of results.

Pricing The cost of using the SCI depends mainly on the size of the organisation. Prices may also vary according to the size and complexity of the organisation involved, and any specific customisation and reporting requirements. Indicative costs are as follows, in Danish Krone. Small Organisations and Community Groups Large Organisations (100+ employees) kr kr About Awake The SCI is developed by Awake, the consulting business of Tim Cotter, a psychologist specialising in the psychology of sustainability. Awake provides tools and services which support organisations and communities to develop a culture of sustainability. Since 2005, Tim has trained hundreds of sustainability professionals to be more effective at engaging people in sustainability. Awake works with leading organisations to support them in their efforts to embed sustainability more deeply in their culture. Contact Details in Denmark: Lise Maj Jensen Aut.psykolog Psykologhuset i Ry Fredensvej Ry Tlf lisemaj@jensen.mail.dk Psykologhuset is an authorised provider of the SCI in Denmark
