1 CLASS OF 2017 & Beyond Preparing for High School and Your Future Academic and Career Planning
2 High School Graduation Requirements Current 9 th grade class (2014 cohort Class of 2017) and beyond Graduation requirements could change with legislative action Students in high school must earn 24 credits in order to graduate Students in high school must earn a Cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.0 un-weighted or higher on a 4.0 scale Pass the Grade 10 FCAT 2.0 (with a level 3 or higher) Pass the Algebra End of Course Exam (EOC) to receive a standard diploma Complete one complete on-line course within the 24 credits, excluding a driver education course
3 What classes do I have to take? 4 credits in English English 1 English 2 English 3 English 4 English honors, AP, pre-aice, AICE, and dual enrollment may satisfy this requirement Remember - You must pass the Grade 10 FCAT 2.0 (with a level 3 or higher)
4 What classes do I have to take? 4 credits in Algebra I You must take the End of Course Exam (EOC) which counts as 30% of final full-year course grade. You must pass the EOC to receive a high school diploma. Geometry The EOC counts as 30% of final full-year course grade Plus 2 other math courses honors, AP, pre-aice, AICE, and dual enrollment may satisfy this requirement
5 What classes do I have to take? 3 credits in Science Biology The EOC counts as 30% of final full-year course grade Plus 2 other equally rigorous science courses 2 of the 3 science courses must have a laboratory component Science honors, AP, pre-aice, AICE, and dual enrollment may satisfy this requirement
6 What classes do I have to take? 3 credits in Social Studies 1 credit World history 1 credit U.S. History The EOC counts as 30% of final full-year course grade ½ credit U.S. Government ½ credit Economics (must include financial literacy) Social Studies honors, AP, AICE, and dual enrollment may satisfy this requirement
7 How do I get placed into Honors, Advanced Placement, AICE, or Dual Enrollment? A willingness to enthusiastically enter into class discussions Advanced or proficient standardized FCAT test results which correlate to target area(s) of study (Level 3 or higher) An ability to deal with special learning opportunities and some extra demands Consideration will be given to the student's overall academic record (not just one course) Determining factors include language skills, developed writing skills, consistent effort, attitude, and general academic performance Student willingness to meet the rigors of the course Teacher and Counselor recommendation(s) The interest and ability to be self-motivated and self-disciplined in order to work independently to develop their own personal work The student should demonstrate the sustained ability to keep up with all other course work
8 Do I need to take a World Language? A World Language class is not required for high school graduation, but it is required for Bright Futures and state university admissions. At minimum two years of the same world language is recommended.
9 What classes do I have to take? 1 credit in a Fine or Performing Art Examples include: Art classes Music classes Drama classes Speech and Debate classes
10 What classes do I have to take? 1 credit in a Physical Education and Health H.O.P.E. (Health Opportunities in Physical Education) is required. 8 credits of Electives Examples: Art classes Music classes JROTC Career and Technical Education classes (culinary arts, computer technology, etc.)
11 Scholar Diploma Designation In addition to meeting the standard high school diploma requirements, students pursuing this designation are required to: Earn at least one credit in courses identified as AP, IB, AICE or dual enrollment Earn 1 credit in Algebra 2 and Statistics or an equally rigorous mathematics course Earn 1 credit in chemistry or physics and one course equally rigorous to chemistry or physics Pass the EOC s at level 3 or its equivalent in U.S. History and Biology 1 Earn 2 credits in the same world language
12 Merit Diploma Designation In addition to meeting the standard high school diploma requirements, students pursuing this designation are required to: Attain one or more industry certifications from the list established
13 Industry Certifications Top 6 industry certifications earned by Collier County Public Schools high school students: Adobe Photoshop Microsoft Office Specialist Serve Safe Auto Desk Auto CAD Adobe Premiere Pro Certified Internet Business Associate
14 ACCEL Program/Diploma The ACCEL Diploma is a standard diploma that may be earned in 18 credits of the 24 credit diploma requirements: Students must meet all core course requirements Must pass FCAT 2.0 Pass the Algebra 1 EOC at an achievement level of 3 or higher 3 elective credits (rather than the 10 or 8) Physical Education (H.O.P.E.) is not required
