1 FUSION SUPPORT SERVICES, LLC MJ (MECHANICAL JOINT) ADAPTER MJ Adapters are used to connect HDPE pipe to Ductile Iron Pipe, fittings, valves and hydrants. MJ Adapters are used with a ductile iron gland ring which can rotate to line up the gland bolt holes with the existing bolt holes of the pipe, fitting or valve. This gland ring pushes against the adapter shoulder and compresses the rubber gasket between the MJ Adapter shoulder and the pipe/ fitting or valve hub making a water tight, fully restrained connection. Fusion Support Services MJ Adapters are molded in the USA and are available in 4 inch to 24 inch (IPS & DIPS) sizes. Each MJ Adapter is QC inspected including ultra sound scanning to preclude the possibility of voids. Fusion Support Services MJ Adapters are molded to the requirements of ANSI/AWWA C 906 for use with HDPE pipe conforming to ASTM F-714. MJ Adapters are capable of being joined to HDPE pipe or fittings by butt fusion or electro-fusion. The MJ Adapter can be joined to any HDPE pipe or fitting manufactured from a similar or like resin including Cell Classification per ASTM D-3350 of C or C. Fusion Support Services MJ Adapter is molded from a PE 3408/3608 high density polyethylene NSF approved material designed to meet the stringent demands of municipal water systems and is AWWA C-906 compliant. Sizes are from 4 inch to 24 inch in both IPS and DIPS. Fusion Support Services MJ Adapters are fully pressure rated and no pressure de-rating of the fitting is required. The MJ Adapters seal against leaks and restrain against pullout with no external clamps required. Fusion Support Services MJ Adapters are molded in the USA and are not machined from pipe which could have a tendency to neck down on the pipe ends due to pipe memory. Fusion Support Services MJ Adapters have an accessory kit available which includes: extended T-bolts with nuts, a rubber gasket and a full body gland ring. Optional stainless steel stiffeners are available.

4 MJ ADAPTER INSTALLATION Heat fusion creates a leak free joint as strong as the pipe itself that is self restrained and requires no restraints to keep the joint from pulling apart. Mechanical Joint Adapters when installed to pipe or fittings that meet AWWA C11/ANSI A21.11 seal against leaking and restrain against pullout. Fusion Support Services MJ Adapters can be butt fused or electro-fused to HDPE pipe. First slip the gland ring over the HDPE pipe or fitting. The gland projection should fit against the rib of the fitting. Heat fuse the MJ Adapter to the pipeline. Allow the heat fusion to cool completely before handling. Install the gasket over the MJ Adapter and align the MJ Adapter with the socket hub of the ductile iron pipe fitting. All surfaces must be clean. Wipe the hub and the mating end of the MJ Adapter with a clean dry cloth removing all dirt. Be careful to remove all rust and foreign material from the inside of the hub. Lubricate the gasket, the end of MJ Adapter and the inside of the hub with an approved pipe lubricant meeting AWWA C111. Do not use soapy water. The MJ Adapter and the hub must be aligned straight into each other. Insert the MJ Adapter into the socket hub. Make sure it is even and completely inserted into the hub. Install the gland bolts and tighten evenly to 75 to 90 ft-lb in 20 ft-lb increments using a pattern of tightening starting with the bottom bolt, then the top bolt, then the side and remaining bolts in a crossing pattern, maintaining the same gap between the face of the socket hub flange and the gland ring at all points around the joint. Tightening with a torque wrench is recommended. When connecting the MJ Adapter to a valve with an MJ connection, longer T- Bolts may be required or T-Bolts may be lengthened using a coupling nut and Grade 5 all thread to lengthen the bolt. In some cases the MJ Adapter must be beveled to allow the disk of a MJ butterfly valve to clear the inside wall of the MJ Adapter. The MJ Adapter should be field tested for valve disk clearance.
