17 Rudolph Höss Höss was fanatical in his religious belief until his teens, when his priest broke the Seal of the Confessional. When his father died, he turned to the military, being instituted in the SS Totenkopfverbände (Death's Head units) and then being instituted as the leader of a block at Dachau (1934). In 1940, he was made the Commandant of Auschwitz. 17
