3 UNDERGRADUATE Nursing 3 years full-time 6 years part-time M J PROFESSIONAL Graduates are eligible to register as a registered nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia. Nurses are in demand throughout the world because they are vital to the health and well-being of every country and person. As a nurse, you can have a variety of roles or work in a number of specialty areas. The choice is yours! ENTRY PATHWAYS VCE Single unit enrolments through Monash University Open Universities Australia Diploma of Nursing Diploma of Tertiary Studies PREREQUISITES Y12: Units 1 and 2: satisfactory completion in two units (any study combination) of General Mathematics, Mathematical Methods or Specialist Mathematics or Units 3 & 4: Mathematical Methods (any); and a study score of at least 30 in English (EAL) or at least 25 in English other than EAL. If you want to make a real difference in health care with great employment potential and have a career that is varied, challenging, fulfilling and continually developing, then our Nursing is a great place to start. No two days are ever the same! This course offers hands on clinical experience in both rural and metropolitan hospitals in Victoria. Once you have graduated you will have job opportunities in a diverse range of employment settings. The Nursing will provide you with the knowledge and clinical skills to provide high quality nursing care. As a graduate nurse you will be skilled in problem solving and clinical reasoning; competent and safe in practice of clinical nursing skills and able to work within legal and ethical standards of practice. I don t really know how I chose nursing but there were many factors that definitely helped. It was partly for the numerous doors it opens up and the ability to travel with it. Bachelor of Nursing Registration/ employment as a nurse Nursing Scholars Program The Nursing Scholars program course has been designed for high performing prospective students interested in nursing. The point of difference from the Nursing is the additional engagement in an academic support program. Students enrolled in the Nursing Scholars program will have an academic mentor who will provide individual guidance and academic counselling. The focus of the program will be research and leadership development and provides a pathway to more advanced learning and engagement in nursing research. Develop knowledge and skills Pathway to postgraduate studies which will enable you to demonstrate ethical values whilst becoming a critical and creative scholar and to produce innovative solutions through the application of research skills IB: A score of at least 4 in English SL or 3 in English HL or 5 in English B SL or 4 in English B HL, and successful completion of any mathematics subject. NY12: As for Year 12 (or Year 12 equivalent). ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS For successful applicants: Students must complete a National Police Records Check and must hold a valid Working with Children Check before undertaking clinical placements. Students must comply with the Monash University, Nursing and Midwifery Immunisation Policy. Failure to hold satisfactory checks may result in students being unable to complete the course. The course consists of six semesters. Clinical nursing experience will be undertaken in years 1-3. This is a major component of the course and requires placement in a variety of health care settings. Travel to clinical placements will be required. 4 UNDERGRADUATE Nursing and Midwifery Peninsula 4 years full-time M F PROFESSIONAL Graduates can apply to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia as a registered nurse and as a registered midwife. Midwives and nurses hold a special place in communities throughout the world. A combined midwifery and nursing degree provides you with the skills to make a difference in health care outcomes and ensures constant career challenges and diversity. The choice is yours! I chose nursing and midwifery because it is a field in which you can impact on somebody s world everyday by doing the smallest of things - it is very satisfying. 4 5

5 UNDERGRADUATE Master of Nursing If you are a graduate with a non-nursing degree, this intensive program will give you the opportunity to switch careers and reap the rewards of becoming a highly skilled health professional. Clayton 2 years full-time PROFESSIONAL Graduates are eligible to apply for registration as a registered nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia. M G This course is an effective blend of theory and practice, with about half your study week spent in class and the other half in clinical practice, allowing you to apply and reinforce knowledge quickly. Offering hands on clinical experience in metropolitan hospitals in Victoria, once graduated you will have job opportunities in a diverse range of employment settings. The Master of Nursing provides you with the knowledge and clinical skills to provide high quality nursing care. Once graduated you are skilled in problem solving and clinical reasoning; competent and safe in your practice of clinical nursing skills and able to work within legal and ethical standards of practice. The Master of Nursing is an entry to practice degree that offers a professional nursing qualification if you have already gained a non-nursing undergraduate degree. The Master of Nursing is not a postgraduate degree if you are already a nurse and wish to undertake study to advance your practice or wish to pursue a research pathway. Suitable for Graduates with non-nursing degrees who want the opportunity to switch careers and reap the rewards of becoming a highly skilled professional. This intensive program is an entry to practice degree. Benefits Graduates are employed in a wide range of health care environments. First Semester (March) Second Semester (July) Applicants are required to have a prior Bachelor s degree in any discipline as a minimum entry requirement. To be eligible for admission into the Master of Nursing (graduate entry) you will have an undergraduate degree (for example a BSc or BA) from a recognised university. In addition, applicants will need to demonstrate evidence of previous tertiary level study of a minimum of one 6cp unit of study in human anatomy/physiology - if you don t have this you can do a human biology short course via distance education at Monash or equivalent. As well as providing certificate of prior transcript of results and degree certificate, applicants are also required to provide Certified copy of proof of ID Statement of purpose IELTS is required for all students where their degree/s was undertaken in a language other than English. The requirements are: IELTS score of 6.5 overall with 6.5 in each band except for speaking which requires 7.0. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS For successful applicants: Students must complete a National Police Records Check and must hold a valid Working with Children Check before undertaking clinical placements. 6 UNDERGRADUATE Bachelor Of Nursing (Honours) 1 year full-time 2 years part-time M G Provides you with opportunities for specialised and advanced work in your field through development of research skills. It will open up a range of research and other opportunities, including an accelerated pathway to doctoral research degrees (PhD). The Honours degree produces early career nurses and midwives with the research, critical thinking and decision making skills to influence future clinical practice, which benefits the needs of individuals and the community. You may choose to undertake research in an area of interest to you, in line with the Monash Nursing and Midwifery research strategy. Suitable for Registered nurses and registered midwives who wish to develop research and evaluation skills in nursing, midwifery and health care. First Semester (March) Second Semester (July) Nursing (Honours) Increased employment opportunities Accelerated pathway to doctoral research degrees (PhD) Research opportunities in specialist areas eg. midwifery, acute care and mental health Applicants must have completed a Nursing, Bachelor of Midwifery, Nursing (Community Health), Bachelor of Nursing and Midwifery or a Nursing Practice at Monash University, comparable undergraduate qualification in nursing from another approved tertiary institution; and a combined average of 70% or higher for semesters 3, 4, 5 and 6 of the Nursing or Midwifery or equivalent performance in the final two years of nursing degree from another tertiary institution....the course coordinators were always very helpful and encouraging, I didn t have a second thought about selecting the University because I was sure that I would find experienced supervisors who were able to guide me through the research. 8 9

8 POSTGRADUATE Master of Advanced Nursing Off and on campus 1.5 years full-time 3 years part-time M C Graduates of this program use the skills and knowledge developed to undertake advanced roles in clinical nursing, leadership and policy developments, nursing education, management and research. First Semester (March) Second Semester (July) Applicants should hold either a Nursing degree with a high level of achievement and relevant nursing registration (e.g. Registered Nurse with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) or equivalent. Applicants who wish to undertake some specialist pathways of study may be required to have registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency and appropriate clinical employment in an approved clinical agency. Monash University really appealed to me as it provides its students with a great balance between both academic learning and practical nursing experience. The postgraduate course options provide me with all the broad opportunities I need to progress my study into the future. This advanced, highly flexible course is designed to get you, an ambitious registered nurse, where you want to be - whether that s engaging in a senior role as a multiskilled all-rounder, a specialist in a variety of clinical settings, a researcher, Nurse Practitioner, educator, manager or policy leader. You can study by coursework only or combine coursework and research. The all-coursework option may include a choice of a specialist or generic study pathways. Clinical and non-clinical specialisations in the Master of Advanced Nursing include: education; emergency nursing; intensive care nursing; leadership and management; mental health and Nurse Practitioner. To be eligible for clinical specialisations you must be employed in the specialist clinical area. These specialisations are offered at either Clayton or Peninsula campus. This course also offers a number of elective units which will be offered every second year depending on numbers including; palliative care practice; disaster and emergency nursing management; refugee health and wellbeing, and child health to name a few. This wide choice reflects our links to major teaching hospitals and world-class medical research centres across metropolitan and regional Victoria, and throughout Australia. This course will prepare you, a registered nurse with leadership skills, to plan, implement, coordinate and evaluate health care, as well as formulate policy for a diverse and multicultural society. You will be well equipped to contribute to the health of individuals, families, communities and the development of the profession on completion of this Master of Advanced Nursing at Monash. Suitable for Registered nurses wishing to undertake advanced nursing studies. Some specialist pathways of study (emergency, ICU, Nurse Practitioner, mental health) require you to have registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency and appropriate clinical employment in an approved clinical agency. 9 POSTGRADUATE Advanced Clinical Midwifery Specialisation within Master of Advanced Health Care Practice Off and on campus 1.5 years full-time 3 years part-time M G I wanted to go into a career where I was able to help people and make a difference to their lives. I went into the health sector as there are so many different career pathways. Graduates of this program are prepared for appointments to senior midwifery leadership positions and for roles in midwifery education. First Semester (March) Second Semester (July) Applicants should hold either a Midwifery degree with a high level of achievement or a Graduate Diploma of Midwifery with current registration as a midwife in country of origin/residence. Applicants who hold a certificate of Midwifery must undertake the units MID5006 and MID5007 to meet the minimum entry requirements. This course will provide you, an experienced midwife with the opportunity to gain a Masters level qualification that enhances your professional practice and provides the widest range of options for your future. The Advanced Clinical Midwifery course will prepare you for senior management, education and leadership roles in midwifery. The course will also appeal if you are interested in a pathway to higher research degrees. The Master of Advanced Clinical Midwifery offers you the opportunity to customise elements of your learning, allowing you to meet individual, personal, professional and community needs, with the opportunity to explore issues surrounding current midwifery practice by undertaking a minor thesis or research project. Suitable for Experienced midwives seeking senior management, education and leadership roles in midwifery. 10 HIGHER DEGREES BY RESEARCH (HDRS) Master of Philosophy 2 years full-time 4 years part-time 3438/ C The MPhil requires you to submit a thesis which may include published work directly relevant to the argument of the thesis, provided such work has been written during the period of candidature and has not been presented for any other degree or diploma at this university or any other institution. Graduates of the Master of Philosophy are leaders in nursing and midwifery in academic and clinical careers with advanced understanding of research and evidence based practice. You will be able to critically evaluate the work of others, apply relevant research techniques to issues in nursing and midwifery and to provide quality written work, publishable in scholarly journals. Any time of year, subject to the availability of supervision. H1, H2A or upper H2B Honours qualifications (or equivalent) A relevant Master degree with a significant research component; or Other qualifications and experience which, in the opinion of the committee, are equivalent or a satisfactory substitute. Doctor of Philosophy 3 years full-time 6 years part-time 0047/ A The work undertaken as part of this research degree must constitute a significant contribution to the knowledge and understanding of a field of study of direct concern to the faculty, and must demonstrate the capacity of the candidate to carry out independent research. Your degree will consist of a research thesis (or alternative approved outputs) and will require the completion of research training activities or coursework. Your PhD research project should be conceived from the outset as clearly achievable within three years equivalent full-time study. With candidates expected to complete their degree within four years of equivalent full-time study. HIGHER DEGREES BY RESEARCH (HDRS) These are university wide degrees that may be undertaken in any area of research offered by Nursing and Midwifery. Candidature involves the independent investigation of a research problem that has been formulated by you under the direct supervision of members of academic staff. Graduates of the Doctor of Philosophy are leaders in nursing and midwifery in academic and clinical careers with advanced understanding of research and evidence based practice. Once you have completed the course you will have a thorough understanding of relevant research techniques and evidence in your field. You will be able to present highquality written work suitable for publication in appropriate scholarly journals, and be able to critically evaluate both your own and others written work in their chosen field.
