Setting out principles for decorative brickwork Recording work prior to removal Cutting of arches and decorative bricks The use of special bricks Building decorative brickwork features Selection and use of the appropriate lime mortar. This particular course is suitable for anyone interested the conservation of brickwork features and the appropriate specification of such work. The course can be tailored more towards practical training or it can focus on specification and repair principles. It is therefore suitable for professionals and craftspersons alike. on the website. Each course will run with between 5 and 15 students. On request, they can also be tailored to focus on one feature alone such as arches or chimney stacks.
2 AN INTRODUCTION TO GAUGED BRICKWORK Normally a two day course aimed at providing an introduction to the principles of gauged brickwork. The course is largely practically based and will include building a gauged brickwork arch. The setting out and marking of bricks for cutting and rubbing An explanation of the tools and equipment used for cutting and rubbing bricks Building a gauged arch from rubbed bricks using a putty lime mortar. This particular course is suitable for anyone interested the developing a basic understanding and skill in gauged brickwork. The course is tailored more towards practical training but will provide useful information for those who may wish to specify or inspect gauged brickwork. The course is particularly useful to students who have the NVQ3 in brickwork or heritage masonry skills. on the website. Each course will run with between 5 and 15 students.
3 REPAIRING HISTORIC BRICKWORK A two day course aimed at providing a more in depth understanding of the principles involved in repairing historic brickwork, focusing on both the identification and assessment of defects and the appropriate repairs. An explanation of the causes of decay and deterioration of historic brickwork The Inspection and diagnosis of defects in brickwork The selection of appropriate repair techniques including crack stitching, cutting out bricks, reversing bricks, re-pointing, selection of appropriate mortars. An overview of the conservation principles of repair The specification of the repair works. This particular course is suitable for anyone interested the repair of historic brickwork. The course can be tailored towards practical training or it can focus on the specification and repair principles. It is therefore suitable for professionals and craftspersons alike. on the website. 4 LIME MORTAR RE-POINTING 1 A one day introductory course on the basic properties of lime mortar and the principles involved in re-pointing historic brickwork. The course will include some basic theory, demonstrations and a hands on practical session. An overview of the preparation and mixing of lime mortars The selection of the appropriate tools for re-pointing The appropriate methods of cutting out hard cement based mortars The preparation of the wall prior to re-pointing Re-pointing practice Finishing the lime mortar joints. This particular course is suitable for anyone interested in the basics of lime mortar and re-pointing and who have had little or no previous experience of using lime mortar. It provides also a good basis for Lime mortar Re-pointing 2 which looks at lime mortar in much more detail. on the website. Each course will run with between 5 and 15 students. This particular course is suitable for anyone who specifies lime mortar or supervises trades people in repair work involving lime mortar. The course is typically aimed at architects, surveyors, planners along with trades people who require more knowledge and practice of lime mortar re-pointing.
