1 REPORT: One day workshop on Patent Search & Analysis Report (PSAR) for Faculty of Pharmacy held on 28 th December 2013 at GTU, Gandhinagar Campus Center of Pharmaceutical Studies & Drug Delivery Technologies department of Gujarat Technological University organized one day workshop on Patent Search & Analysis Report (PSAR) at GTU, Gandhinagar campus on 28 th December 2013, Saturday. In this workshop, 55 faculty members from 30 different pharmacy colleges affiliated to GTU participated. The program was begun with lamp lighting by the dignitaries followed by welcome speech by Dr. Manish A. Rachchh, Program coordinator and Associate Professor of GTU. He mentioned that the objective of this workshop was to provide an overview and hands-on experience to faculty members of Pharmacy on the areas of Patent Search as well as Patent Analysis. If students of M. Pharm (Sem IV) do the study and analysis of at least 5 patents, it might increase the innovation quotient of their work. He also mentioned that GTU has started a unique program known as Patent Clinic, wherein with help of internal and external experts, GTU is providing a platform to all students and faculty to file their provisional patent application without paying any fees to expert. Honb. Dr. Akshai Aggarwal sir, Vice chancellor of GTU during his presidential speech stressed upon the need of innovation in Pharmacy education. He mentioned that currently pharmacy education both at UG as well as PG level was not able to attract good number of students. Nearly 60% seats at UG level and PG level remained vacant this year. He said that if every College were able to offer quality education so that its graduates were known for their competence, this situation would not have arisen. He gave three important suggestions to the young faculty members to build their careers in this turbulent situation. 1) Reading of scientific journals and news articles at least for 2 h in a day: This will enable them to create an interest among students about the new developments in their fields. 2 spreads out in the environment of educational institutions, they will start becoming an institution, which offers a true university-level education. 2) Fight against spurious students: He mentioned that allowing spurious students, who are actually not coming for full time course particularly at M.Pharm level, still down grade the quality of the output. So it is the moral responsibility of each faculty to fight against such practices. He said that the University always took strong action against such practices and would continue to do so. 3) Create personal course web-site: By creating a personal web site, the faculty can share his/her course material with their students. This will not only increase knowledge sharing among the co-researchers but will also create brand for such faculty and the college. The technical session started with Mr. Padmin Buch, Director, GITCO, Ahmedabad, who had discussed about the Over view of Patent Search with special reference to Pharmaceuticals industries and academia. Dr. Manish A. Rachchh, Program coordinator and Associate professor of GTU, Ahmedabad, has discussed about Open source Patent search database and demonstrated EPO (Worldwide) and IPO database online to participants with examples. Mr. Amit Patel, Project officer-ipr, GTU, Ahmedabad has taken a session on how to prepare PSAR report and explained about how to read patent documents and explained the context of EPO, IPO, WIPO and US patents. All the faculty members have actively participated in this workshop and appreciated the efforts of GTU to bring down novelty in the M. Pharm projects. Few suggestions and feed back of participated faculty members are as under: It is a good program relevant to the research projects. But preferably this should be included during beginning of M. 3 Hands on training session on PSAR should be arranged for M. Pharm students along with FDP - Prof. B. S. Nayak, Shree Swaminarayan Sankar Pharmacy College, Zundal, Gandhinagar. This PSAR workshop is really useful for the M.Pharm students to increase novelty in their projects. University should provide facility for E-journals and online paid Patent Search Database for faculty and M. Pharm students for better literature review. Prof. Chirag S. Rami, Shri Sarvajanik Pharmacy College, Mehsana. This is a good move to increase novelty in the research work and make it useful for society. University should announce some appreciation scheme, for those who file their genuine patent application. This will increase the number and quality of research and patent too. - Prof. Harsha Patel, Indukaka Ipcowala College of Pharmacy, New V. V. Nagar. PSAR is really a good move by the University. University can play a vital role in bridging gap between Industry and Academia. University should establish I.I.I. cell, which will help M. Pharm students and faculty to identify industry defined projects, resource materials from industry side as well as helpful in transfer of technology to industry once it get developed. - Prof. Dhaval Mori, B. K. Mody Gov. Pharmacy College, Rajkot. This PSAR will be helpful to M. Pharm students not only for their dissertation projects but also to get better job opportunity in the industry. For better quality of research at M. Pharm level, project duration should be of 01 year instead of 6 months. University should provide financial assistance to those M. Pharm students, who are working on really novel and industry applicable research work. Prof. Samip Shah, Pioneer Pharmacy College, Vadodara. Along with Dr. Manish A.
