4 Healthcare Innovation Centre, The Capital Region of Denmark Was established in August 2009 and is located at the University Hospital at Herlev. Initiates innovation projects in all 12 hospital units of the Capital Region + Psychiatry and the Disabled Is funded by the Regional Growth Forum of the Capital Region of Denmark as well as the 14 units of the region. Work interdisciplinary with hospitalstaff, industry, research institutions, designers and others. Our Goal is to develop new products, concepts, services, organisations structures focus is not only on technology

11 Healthcare Innovation Lab methodology Simulation as an innovation tool/user-driven innovation method The traditional way: Simulation is used for training and education of healthcare professionals (incl. at the Danish Institute of Medical Simulation, Capital Region of Denmark) New at the Healthcare Innovation Lab: Simulation is used for innovation = product development. Public/private sector innovation partners develop together from the start (companies in the field of medicine, IT, construction, services with clinicians/hosp. departments and research institutions).

14 Three demonstration projects/business cases show the possibilities and value of simulation as an innovation tool: The Outpatient Clinic of the Future Functional and organisational planning in outpatient clinics (Department of Gynaecology, Herlev H., DTU Management and Health, Grontmij, Healthcare Innovation Centre) Mobile blood test results Mobile summary of test results (Department of Gastroendocrinology, Bispebjerg Hospital) Telemedicine - Treatment at a distance Cardiac Insufficiency Telemedicine (Medical Department, Bornholm Hospital; Department of Cardiology, Herlev Hospital).

16 Case A: The Outpatient Clinic of the Future why and how The trend towards shorter periods of hospitalisation and more outpatient checks will continue in the coming years. The way in which we organise the work flow and outpatient clinics to best effect in the future is therefore very important. There is little national and international research about the Outpatient Clinic of the Future. The project group has applied table-top simulations using cardboard and paper models. The simulation model has been used to reveal the needs of the users (patients and clinicians) for physical frameworks that put the patient at the centre while at the same time supporting the staff's work processes to best effect.

17 A. The Outpatient Clinic of the Future What? The essential aspect of the new outpatient clinic concept is a new room model. It addresses the problem caused by long corridors, where patients and staff are walking in and out and past each other, thus hindering cooperation and the general outlook. The new room model is circular and has been named the Star Model, providing a more efficient use of staff resources and a much better patient experience.

19 Case B: Mobile Blood Test Results How can user-centrered design and simulation improve IT in healthcare? Adverse events constitute an increasing and very serious problem in Danish hospitals. Clinicians need tools that insure patient safety. Prototype developed and tested on a Windows platform. HTML version of a prototype has been developed simultaneously so that test users can access via the Internet on a Smartphone or small tablet. The process has, among others, consisted, of a series of simulations with focus on the user (clinicians).
