2 A LETTER TO PARENTS AND PLAYERS: OUR PROGRAM PHILOSOPHY Let s step back and think about this for a moment: Why do you want your son or daughter to participate in AAU Basketball? My guess is that there are a number of reasons, including: the chance to participate with and against better competition, to receive quality coaching and instruction or maybe to some day be evaluated by a college coach or scout? Whatever your reasons, the brutal reality is that most AAU programs simply do not deliver what they promise. Well, those days are over. Our aim is to set a new standard and to give serious players in the Bay Area a place to come to do one thing: Get Better. The backbone of our program is player development. If you are looking for a program that is highly organized, delivers on the promise of high level, quality instruction and allows your child the chance to play against much better competition...then look no further! While other players are spending their time in the car, in the airport or at the hotel, you ll be working on your weak hand, your shooting fundamentals, moving without the ball and learning how to play. We also realize that it is incredibly important for people to play in games. With 2 state-of-the-art gymnasiums right here at The Olympic Club, our plan is to bring in the area s top teams. We will also travel to the area s better tournaments, but again, our aim is to maximize your child s time and help them develop. How many times are you going to be promised that you are going to a tournament where several college coaches are going to be attending, only to arrive and have 40 people in the gym, none of whom are college coaches? As a former Division I player and Division I assistant coach, there s one thing I know for sure: If you are good enough, the college coaches will find you...period. It s their job. I want to be clear that it is our goal to attract the area s elite level players. Similar to our men s and women s national level teams, these teams are for serious, committed and talented players. We are not interested in lazy, selfish, entitled, or individually centered players. If you want to be coached, respect authority, like to make the extra pass, have a team-first attitude and have some God-given talent and ability, then you are going to flourish with other like-minded individuals in our program. Lastly, I have a very important point for all parents considering this program to understand: Let us coach your child, you need to concentrate on simply loving them. We simply want everyone to understand that we are going to run a first class organization in which the parents will act appropriately. You guys just sit back, relax, love them like crazy and let us take care of the rest. 3 THE BASICS: Players must agree to attend 80% of all practices and games to be eligible for a team. Cost is $525 per season, per player. This fee covers coaching, player notebook, uniform, and all tournaments. Once a player makes one of our OC Elite teams, they have to decide if they would like to become a junior member of The Olympic Club. Be sure to ask for more details! GET FIRED UP! We use the Notebook Concept for Learning...All players take notes at practice and games! Fall, Spring, and Summer AAU Seasons In an effort to create the most dynamic program possible for your child, we offer 3 seasons of OC Elite AAU basketball each year. They are: Fall: Late August-October Spring: March-May Summer June-July Detailed information on each of those seasons included on the following pages. DID YOU KNOW: Many of the NBA teams practice at the OC! Weekly Practice Sessions Each team practices twice per week. In an effort to make things as simple as possible, we have tried to develop a consistency about our practice times. Detailed practice times are included on the following pages. Each OC Elite practice is a highly organized skill development session. We plan every drill down to the basic details, with 95% of each practice focused on skill development. This is not a throw the balls out and let them scrimmage for 2 hours type program! We find that a talented player that has been trained specifically over an extended amount of time has a serious advantage over another player. Daily practice topics include: Detailed Character Building Dynamic Warm-up and Stretch Athleticism/Quickness work Footwork Ballhandling Passing and Catching Shooting Mechanics Transition Play and Moves Pressing and Trapping Moving without the ball Man to Man Defensive Concepts Position Specific Skills Rebounding and Toughness Team concepts and strategy
