1 The Northwest Catholic District School Board CATHOLIC PARENT INVOLVEMENT COMMITTEE VIDEO CONFERENCE MEETING Date: February 11, 2014 MINUTES Time: Place: 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Video Conference from: Sacred Heart School St. Joseph s School Fort Frances Board Office (for Our Lady of the Way School, St. Francis School & St. Michael s School) St. Patrick s School Attendance: Rick Boisvert, Director of Education Joanne Querel, Assistant Superintendent Cathy Bowen, Trustee Naz Stillwaugh, SHS council member Cathy Piotrowski, SFS Chair Stephanie Cran, SJS Chair, PIC chair Tara Tolley, SMS Chair Regrets: Tiffany Burbeck, SPS Chair, Jennifer Maki and Heather Fukushima, SHS Cochairs Prayer: Rick led the prayer: Litany for Families Consideration and Approval of Agenda Moved by: Seconded by: Cathy Stephanie THAT the Agenda of the Catholic Parent Involvement Committee February 11, 2014, be approved as presented/amended.
2 CPIC Minutes, Month ##, 2014 Page 2 of 14 Confirmation of Minutes Moved by: Tara Seconded by: Stephanie THAT the Minutes of the Catholic Parent Involvement Committee dated November 25, 2013, be approved as circulated/amended. Stategic Planning: Multi year planning process for parents students and use an appreciative focus, identify things that are going well and what is our future expectations; Nine questions to discuss: jot down things that come to you after this meeting- Rick This will also be presented to school councils Highlighting what we are celebrating and identifying key future 1. What do you value: - the morals and values and caring culture developed by staff within the school - Culture- priest comes into the class so students get to know them personally 2. As we develop our next strategic plan what to keep to mind: - The Daily Five program at SMS, Drydenwith many
3 CPIC Minutes, Month ##, 2014 Page 3 of 14 changes- talk about moving gr 7/8s into high schoollook ahead to a board response and how to deal with a possible influx of students or parents may look at the 7-12 model and see it as a viable possibility- ie. Sports teams, etc. - From a marketing standpoint to retain our studentswhat is our response going to be - Somethings in the plan should stay there eg. Staff PD, Academics, Differentiated instruction support for the variety of learners in a classroom 3. Look into the future what evidence would you expect to see : - Results with EQAO - Reading results
4 CPIC Minutes, Month ##, 2014 Page 4 of 14 - Children are happy and feeling supported and showing success, feel that their teachers care about them and want the best for them - Evidence from the teachers to be happy with the leadership in their school and boardteacher attitudes set the tone within the schools - Mental Health- expect to see student surveys around the indicators of mental health so kids are reporting they are not bullied and are happy in school - From a trusees perspectiveget more involvement from our students in participating in parish life. - A well rounded, confident child as they enter

What policies etc to create- Church and school working together, more than just retreat days - Healthy school policies- to another level, build on that now that the policy is in place - Physical education beyond DPA and incoroporate into all classrooms - Rewards in classroomseg. not reward with treats - Number of physical education classes for gym has increased instead of one a week, regular and consitent - Giving teachers strategies to incorporate into daily methods to increase teacher comfort levels and knowledge

If you would like to see changes in policy what would they be? - Feels like a repeat of number 4 7. What do you think the board needs to do to sustain and grow us a system - Dryden- is growing look at the space at this school facility - Parents are concerned with the crowding at SJS, only one gym, crowded playground, bussing issues

What is one thing if we did today, - Support from a caring adult - Keeping kids connected - Keep kids accountable for their actionsownership and responsibility for their school 9. What do you expect of the trustees and senior admini - Consult teachers - Focusing on specific school needs to inform improvement planning - Continue to consult with community stakeholders plan ahead for each community 10. Thanked the group for feedback Parent engagement/ communication through techonology- safe arrivals with the doors locked and is now a physical barrier and look at how schools can better communicate with parents - Monthly newsletters - Access is not an issue - We have the newsletters online- school websites and Board websites - Newsletters via paper to parents and those that do not want it on paper-go online - Link between parents and teachers online would be greatparents are busy and they could have an even better sense of what the day has been likeparents can then lead conversations to reinformce
9 CPIC Minutes, Month ##, 2014 Page 9 of 14 the learning at homeperhaps something once a week as whole classroom - We need to have expertise in the schools to support the websites etc. - School websites are vastly different and could board bring some consistency to the sites and schools could plug information from each school - Online payments KIEV is huge and important for all schools - A combination of school and classroom information - Place recommended sites for learning sites that parents can use and reinforce the learning

Joanne math is a key learning component 1. question- like the challenge in math- math classes- repeat and practice and do homework, parents need to support homework practice- - parents concerned about basic factsmemorization of facts- - math makes sense is key - mental math can be weak- depend on technology- does it make sense- do it in your head ROTE is that so importanthave the building blocks and concepts Confidence is important in math is key - Real day math does it not

Will look at potential ideas.
