3 Philosophy St. Monica Catholic High School is a coeducational, parish high school that provides a college preparatory curriculum for students of diverse abilities, cultures, and faiths. Parents are kindly requested not to drop students before 7:30AM or leave students on campus past 3:45PM. During School Hours: School gates are locked during school hours. Anyone who needs to enter or leave the school during school hours must do so through the designated entrance/exit. Between the hours of 8:00am and 1:00pm, registered students who are waiting for a class to begin, between classes, or who choose to remain on campus after their class ends, MUST report to the designated classroom. This room will be supervised. Registered students will not be permitted in any other areas of campus during the times they are not in class. Non-registered students/visitors are not permitted on campus. 4

5 REGISTRATION POLICIES AND PROCEDURES A Registration form and planning schedule are included as inserts in this booklet. Students will not be registered until all forms have been completed and fees have been paid. Please refer to Important Dates on page 4 for late fees. Payment in full is due at the time of registration. No registration will take place after June 25th. Schedules will be mailed to all registered students on June 24th. Enrollment is co-ed and is open to students entering 7th through 12th grades. Students with known disciplinary issues, however, will not be permitted to attend. Students should check the transfer credit guidelines with their guidance counselors PRIOR to enrolling in a summer course at SMCHS. Each class requires a minimum enrollment of 10 students. Classes not meeting the minimum enrollment criteria will be cancelled and a refund will be issued. Students may enroll in up to three (3) courses. Enrollment is on a first come, first served basis with priority given to SMCHS students. Based on insufficient enrollment, classes may be cancelled. Please verify class availability prior to purchasing textbooks. Fees for classes without sufficient enrollment will be refunded by mail. If a student leaves due to disciplinary reasons or if a student exceeds the maximum number of absences and chooses to leave because he/she will not receive credit for the course, REFUNDS AR NOT GIVEN. 5

6 REGISTRATION FEE There is a $15.00 Registration Fee for all SMCHS Summer School students to cover the cost of picture IDs and lanyards. POLICIES AND PROCEDURES ATTENDANCE Students are expected to attend every class. Students who miss more than two days of a class regardless of the reason, will receive no credit for the course. Two tardies are equivalent to one absence. Students must take final exams on July 31st. Early exams will not be accommodated and students must take a final exam to earn credit in the class. July 3rd is a summer school holiday. A parent must report an absence as early as possible by calling (310) The student must bring a note on the day he/she returns. Failure to clear an absence via parent note may result in dismissal with no refund. STUDENT ID BADGES All SMCHS Summer School students will be issued picture ID badges the first day of school. To maintain student safety, these IDs MUST be worn and be visible on the upper torso at all times while on SMCHS grounds. Students who fail to wear an ID badge may be sent home. Students will be charged $5.00 to replace lost or damaged ID badges. 6

7 DRESS CODE While on campus, neat, modest, and appropriate dress is required. All tops must have sleeves. Bathing suits, tank tops, muscle shirts, bare midriffs or any other revealing attire is not permitted. Shorts, skirts and dresses must be worn at the knee. If at any time the length appears to be two (2) inches or more above the knee, the student may be sent home. No oversized or form fitting pants, shorts, or cutoffs are permitted. No leggings or yoga pants are allowed. Soled, closed-toed shoes must be worn at all times. No flip flops, beach thongs, slippers, or UGGs are allowed. Clothing may not have inappropriate (e.g., drugs, alcohol, profanity) logos/designs. Extremes in hairstyle and color, jewelry, (facial/body piercings) and make-up are not permitted. Visible tattoos are not permitted. Students who do not adhere to the dress code will be sent home and will not receive credit for classes that day. The Director of Summer School reserves the right to make final decision regarding all areas of grooming and appearance.. BEHAVIOR Students are expected to be well-mannered, polite and respectful at all times. The SMCHS Parent-Student Handbook is available on the school website for information regarding behavioral expectations. Students who behave inappropriately, as deemed by the Director of Summer School, will be asked to withdraw with NO REFUND GIVEN. 7

8 ACADEMIC INTEGRITY & BEHAVIORAL EXPECTIONS CONTRACTS Students will be given an Academic Integrity Contract and a Behavior Contract on the first day of classes for every class they attend. Parents and students need to review these forms and sign them for each class taken. Students who do not return all required forms by Wednesday, July 1, will not be allowed to attend classes and this will be considered an absence. FOOD/BEVERAGES Food will be available from the snack bar between the hours of 7:30AM and 1:00PM. Students may also bring change for the vending machines. Food and drink are not permitted in the school buildings at any time. ADMISSION TO SMCHS AFTER SUMMER SCHOOL Any student whose admission or readmission to SMCHS depends upon his/her performance in summer school will be notified by letter within one week after summer school ends regarding his/her admission status. Remediation of poor grades for any continuing student must be made up at SMCHS unless the required class is not offered. GRADE REPORTS Mid-session reports and final grades will be mailed home. Final Report cards for non-smchs students will not be forwarded to schools unless a specific, written request is made. All students and parents will have access to online grade books. 8

9 TEXTBOOKS Textbooks for the courses are not provided and must be supplied by the family. *Check description for incoming freshman courses, as some classes do have books available on loan. Students are expected to have their books the first day of class. Books may be purchased STMONCAHSBOOKS.com (accessed through the SMCHS webpage). PARKING Parking in the parking structure is restricted. Students must park off campus during school hours. Student drop-off will be available from 7:30-8:00AM via the California Avenue entrance to the school. PLEASE NOTE Teachers are available to consult with parents and students via and by appointment during the summer school session. Teachers will NOT be available to discuss grades/student work after July 31st. 9

10 JUNIOR HIGH PROGRAM PROGRAM DESCRIPTION The Junior High Program is offered for credit/no credit only (letter grades will not be issued for these courses). The core academic courses are designed to improve the skills of students in the essential academic subjects of Math and Language Arts classes. Enrichment courses are designed to provide engaging learning experiences through elective classes in the arts and science classes. Unless otherwise noted, the fee per class is $

11 JUNIOR HIGH PROGRAM COURSE DESCRIPTIONS Junior High Pre-Algebra (Grades 7 & 8) Period 1(JMA01) This course will focus on strengthening concepts and skills for success in mathematics while encouraging students to think like mathematicians. Hands-on learning activities will allow students the opportunity to reinforce their math knowledge and improve their problem solving skills. Students entering algebra in the fall or those desiring a review to enhance fundamental math skills to prepare for junior high math will benefit from this course. Junior High English Enrichment (Grades 7 & 8) Period 2 (JEN01) This class is designed to help junior high students become more confident and proficient readers and writers. Various types of high interest literature will be used to improve reading comprehension and vocabulary. A concentration on creative and academic writing will provide students with an opportunity to improve their written expression while engaging their imaginations and natural curiosity. Junior High Summer Art Survey (Grades 7 & 8) Period 3 (JFA01) Have fun being creative outside the lines! This course is designed to encourage creative thinking through artistic experimentation. Students will draw from observation and imagination, explore the various qualities of color, express themselves through symbols, and become familiar with the techniques of using various art media such as clay, paint, photography, charcoal and pastels. Students will become familiar with major historical and contemporary themes and how they are communicated through art. Junior High CSI (Crime Scene Investigation) (Grades 7 & 8) Period 3 (JSC01) If you are intrigued by how detectives solve mysterious crimes, Junior High CSI is for you. In this hands-on, learn-by-doing class, students will learn about how science and creative problem solving are used to figure out whodunit. Topics such as fingerprinting, evidence gathering, evaluating eye witness testimonies, and much more will be covered in this introductory forensic science course. 11

12 ENTERING FRESHMAN PROGRAM PROGRAM DESCRIPTION The ENTERING FRESHMAN PROGRAM is designed to help incoming 9th Graders prepare for success in high school. While most classes are open to any incoming freshman, two courses are open only to designated SMCHS incoming freshmen. Preference in enrollment in summer school courses is given to incoming St. Monica students. Freshman course fees are listed after each course description. Unless otherwise noted, students must purchase the required textbooks. 12

Additionally, students will be guided through the required summer reading which will serve as the basis for some of the coursework. Fee: $275 (includes textbook-loan fee but not summer reading ) Math Skills *** Period 1 or 2 no credit (MA096) This course is designed to prepare students for Algebra I or Algebra IA. Areas of focus will include foundational mathematical concepts and computational skills needed to succeed in Algebra I or Algebra IA. Students will receive whole group as well individualized instruction and practice based upon diagnostic exercises designed to identify students particular needs. Fee: $275 (includes textbook-loan fee) 13

14 ENTERING FRESHMAN PROGRAM ELECTIVE COURSES Algebra I Competency Period 3 5 units (MA193) This course covers the second half of high school algebra. It is designed for students who have completed 8 th grade Algebra and wish to qualify for Geometry in the fall. Students earning an A or B will be placed in Geometry. Selected students earning an A may be recommended for Geometry Honors, if space is available. Students earning less than a B will be placed into Algebra I for the fall term. Students must score appropriately on the math placement exam given in June to qualify for the course. Fee: $275 (includes textbook-loan fee) Pre-Algebra Period 3 5 units (MA098) This course is set at an advanced pace to review computational skills and algebraic content needed to be successful in Algebra I. Fee: $250 English Prep Period 2 5 units (EN099) This course prepares entering 9 th graders in the areas of reading, writing, note taking, time management and test taking skills. Some class time will be used to incorporate SMCHS summer reading. Though the bulk of the curriculum, assignments, and exams will be completed online, there will be a mandatory orientation on June 30. Additionally, students must attend one required live meeting at the conclusion of the course (date TBD). Students will have opportunities to develop community through online dialog with other students and a SMCHS faculty facilitator. This course is designed in accordance with the Health Framework as set by the California Department of Education and adheres to Catholic teaching. Fee: $275 (Includes Red Cross CPR and First Aid Training) Introduction to Health * CLASSROOM COURSE Period 2 5 units (PE190) See course description in curriculum handbook Fee: $250 Coed Physical Education * Period 1 or 2 5 units (PE090) This course focuses on components of exercise and physical fitness, with an emphasis on weight training fundamentals and aerobic activity. It is geared toward the beginner. A SMCHS PE uniform is required. Fee: $250 Tennis * Period 3 5 units (PE507) Skills and conditioning relevant to Tennis will be taught for all levels: beginner, intermediate and advanced. Students will be able to compete either on a social, intermediate or advanced level by the end of the course. Students must secure their own racquet. A SMCHS PE uniform is required. This course fulfills the SMCHS P.E. requirement. Fee $290 (includes court rental cost) Freshman Football Conditioning Period units (PE593) This class is a rigorous conditioning program for incoming SMCHS freshman football team players. Fee: $

16 HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM The HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM is open to students from other high schools. Enrollment is on a first come, first served basis. However, preference will be given to St. Monica students should a class close due to over-enrollment. Please Note : * Fulfills SMCHS graduation requirement # Fufills the CSU/UC requirement/elective Course Descriptions Art I and Art II* # Period 1: Art 1 (FA501) UC/CSU Approved This course is an introduction to visual literacy and to the practice of two-dimensional design through drawing, collage and cut paper. Students will be exposed to a variety of drawing techniques and instructed in the use of different drawing media. Projects include drawing from observation as well as from the imagination. Fee: $270 (includes art fee and supplies packet) Period 2: ART II (FA502) UC/CSU Approved Prerequisite: Art I This course concentrates on the use of color in two-dimensional design. Students will be instructed in the use of both drawing and painting media. These include colored pencils, pastels, acrylic paints watercolors and tempera paints. Through critiques and homework assignments, students will gain an appreciation of great artists and the styles of past and present. Fee: $270 (includes art fee and supplies packet) 16

17 HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM Honors Geometry * # Period 2 & 3 10 units (MA202 /MA202S) This is a class for students who wish to take Algebra II Honors in the fall. The class moves at an accelerated pace and requires substantial outside work. Prior approval required. 18 HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM Tennis *Period 3-5 units (PE507) Skills and conditioning relevant to Tennis will be taught for all levels: beginner, intermediate and advanced. Students will be able to compete either on a social, intermediate or advanced level by the end of the course. Students must secure their own racquet. The SMCHS PE uniform is required. This course fulfills the SMCHS P.E. requirement. Fee $290 (includes court rental cost) Getting Into College Period 1 5 units (ND506) This course will walk students through researching and choosing colleges as well as cover the fundamentals of the college application process including writing essays (using strategies for and addressing UC and Cal State essay questions as well as topics common to other major colleges and universities) and personal statements and requesting letters of reference. The class is mainly for incoming juniors or seniors but is open to incoming sophomores. Fee: $250 Academic Decathlon Preparation Period 3 5 units (ND508) This course is for students who may be interested in participating in the Academic Decathlon and would like to compete academically on a team. It is open to students of all grade levels and grade point averages. It will cover the fundamentals of the 7 subject areas of the Academic Decathlon: Art, Music, Science, Social Science, Mathematics, Literature and Economics as well as the basics of the speech and interview competitions. The final grade for the course will be a combination of class participation, speech preparation and quiz and test scores. Fee: $250 18

19 HIGH SCHOOL REVIEW/REMEDIATION Program Description Review/remediation courses are only open to students currently enrolled in grades 9-12 who have already attempted the course and failed to complete it satisfactorily. Courses are open to all 9th-12th grade students who fit the criteria but preference will be given to SMCHS students if classes become full. All classes are the equivalent of one semester. There is differentiated instruction for Spanish 1 and Spanish 11. Mathematics Algebra IA R * Period 1 (MA191) This course is for students who wish to improve their algebra skills and/ or grade. This course reviews either semester of Algebra IA or the first semester of Algebra I. Algebra IB R * Period 2 (MA192) This course is for students who wish to improve their algebra skills and/ or grade. This course reviews either semester of Algebra IB or the second semester of Algebra I. Geometry R A * Period 1 (MA291) This course is for students who wish to improve their geometry skills and/or 1st semester grade to proceed to Algebra II. Geometry R B * Period 2 (MA292) This course is for students who wish to improve their geometry skills and/or 2nd semester grade to proceed to Algebra II. 20

Algebra II B R * Period 2 B R (MA391) This course is for students who wish to improve their Algebra II skills and/or 2nd semester grade. Religious Studies Religion R A-1st Semester/ R B-2nd Semester* Period 3 (RS 190/290/390/490) This course is for students who wish to improve their religion grade. Coursework corresponds to the appropriate grade level of the 1st or 2nd semester (not both). Christian Service R-1st /2nd Semester * Period 1 (RS 100/200/300/400) TBA 2.5 credits In this independent course, students will make up deficient credit for first or second semester. This course includes individual service completed off-site and submission of written projects. There will be one mandatory meeting with the instructor (TBD). To receive credit, all hours and final Christian Service essays MUST be submitted to the instructor by July 29th. Fee $
