INTRODUCTION Computer Aided Architectural Education is a continuation of an earlier made Master s thesis where by means of computer techniques architecture projects are analysed and visualised. A graphic and interactive document is made with a pedagogical purpose which is useful for the education of architecture students. The actual Master s thesis consists of a CD-ROM containing several animations of the designs made by Rem Koolhaas and Steven Holl for The Nexus World in Fukuoka Japan. II. USED SOFTWARE A. Autodesk Architectural Desktop 2005 Architectural Desktop is a CAD (computer-aided design) software application for 2D and 3D design and drafting 1 developed by Autodesk, inc. In this Master s thesis it is used for drawing plans, sections, elevations and 3D models of the projects. The drawings are exported as DWG format for 3D Studio Max and as MWF format (windows Metafile) for Macromedia Flash MX, which is a vector graphic format. D. Adobe Director MX Director MX is a media application created by Macromedia 2 for setting up CD-ROM s and standalone projectors. In this way different file formats can be joined together in one standalone player. Director MX uses Lingo (scripting language) to communicate with Flash. III. PROJECTS The appartment buildings of Rem Koolhaas and Steven Holl make part of a great masterplan designed by Arata Isozaki.[1] This masterplan, which is called The Nexus World, was intended to house the growing population of Fukuoka 3 in Japan. It contains 192 houses and 16 stores, designed by 6 famous architects 4. In these designs of Rem Koolhaas and Steven Holl Japanese typologies and concepts are reinvented in a Western way. Traditional Japanese architecture and Western Construcivism make contact. These interactions between Japanese and Western influences make the projects so interesting. It is the most used 3D visualization program for architectural aims. In this Master s thesis it is used for materializing, illuminating and rendering the 3D models into still or animated images. C. Adobe Flash MX Flash MX is an animation application developed by Macromedia 2 and is mostly used for Webdesign. The SWF format (Flash Movie) is cross-platform, which is a great advantage.
