3 Movie Maker Introduction Windows Live Movie Maker is designed for the budding videographer. Its controls are simple and the program is generally easy to use. Once you get the hang of things, you ll be wowing your public with great- looking films. Windows Live Movie Maker is a free program that can be used on Microsoft Windows as part of the Windows Live Essentials package. It can allow you to edit video clips from digital cameras and camcorders, as well as videos downloaded from the internet. It can be used to combine clips from a variety of sources into a single video clip. It can also be used to capture from the DVD and VHS, but for this, you will require the hardware available in the Educational Technology Center computer lab. Open Windows Live Movie Maker. If you do not yet have Movie Maker installed, you can find it by going to (or by searching for Windows Movie Maker in Google), and clicking Download now. Simply follow the installation instructions to install Windows Movie Maker. Click on Download Option to install Movie Maker Note: When your computer is installing Movie Maker, you ll see a dialog box that recommends you go ahead and install all the Windows Live Essentials programs. But if you re not going to use them, there s no point in letting them hog space on your hard drive. Then decide which ones you actually want and select them only.

6 IMPORTING CONTENT FROM A FILE From here, if you have digital content, such as video files on a digital camera or SD card/memory stick, or have downloaded videos from itunes or any other internet service, you can browse for this digital content by selecting Click here to browse for videos and photos. Locate and select the file you wish to edit first to add it to your track. Once you ve added your video file, a film strip will appear in the main area with a player screen on the left. You can play your video clip here with the play buttons while the black scrub bar below indicates where in the track you are. You can use the frame-forward and frame-back buttons to navigate frame by frame. You can also use the zoom bar at the bottom right to take a closer look at your film strip. You can also add still images, mp3s or in-line titles to give your movie more personality.

7 Editing the content Split Tool The most common editing tool you will need is the Trim tool or the Split. Both can be accessed from the Edit tab of Movie Maker, and both perform the function of truncating any video clip in your track. The simplest tool to truncate a video is the Split tool, which simply divides one clip into two at any point of your choosing. Slide bar shows position from where video will be split You can then edit either of these two clips independently from one another, or simply delete one of them and leave yourself only with the other. Trim Tool The Trim tool will let you crop a smaller clip out of a larger clip, for instance when there is blank space on the front and tail end of your video clip, or if you only want to take a brief scene out of a larger video. Once again, the slide bar and play, frame-forward and frame-back buttons can be used for precise navigation. You either can click and drag your start and end points, use the scrub bar and Set start point and Set end point buttons, or type the start and end point times in manually. When you are satisfied with your trim, click save trim to go back to Windows Movie Maker with your edited clip. Adding Animations

8 You can access other editing tools in the Animations and Visual Effects tabs. You can hover your mouse over these options to preview the effect on the main screen. Many faculties may find some of these effects beneficial to their video projects. One effect, particularly when trying to place two disparate clips together, is the Blur effect, available in the Animations tab. useful This will create a fade from black effect, which can make the beginning of a clip less abrupt, or soften the jump between two disjointed clips. This animation is best used in conjunction with the Fade in: and Fade out: tools, which are available, back in the Edit tab. This will allow you to create the same effect with your audio as well as your video. When clipping and combining multiple clips, especially clips from different sources, or even different parts of the same source, these two features are very useful for cleaning up the presentation and making the video look more professionally done.

9 Adding Visual Effects To apply an effect, select the item(s) you want to use it on. Then click the ribbon s Visual Effects tab and choose an effect (put your cursor over each effect icon to pre- view it). As you d expect, clicking Apply to all adds the selected effect to everything in your storyboard. Click on Visual Effects Tab to open options Select different effects Click Apply to all to select same effect on When you apply one or more effects to an item, Movie Maker adds four little boxes to its icon in the storyboard. Annoyingly, they re the same four boxes that appear when you apply panning and zooming, so you can t easily tell which type of modification you ve made. To find out, hold your cursor over an item in the storyboard to see a list of its properties. Four little boxes showing that visual effect is added

10 Saving and Exporting Your Movie Now that you ve edited your movie to make it look and sound great, you re ready to save it and export it from Movie Maker so you can show your creation to the world. You might think that, to save your movie, you d simply click the Save movie button on the ribbon s Home tab but you d be mistaken. There s more to it than that. You need to decide what kind of file you want to create and what you want to do with it, which determines exactly how you save the file. Movie Maker can create two kinds of files: 1. Project files: When you start adding clips and images to Movie Maker, you re creating a project a collection of items, audio files, transitions, text pages, and so on that combine to make up your movie. To save your project so you can open it again later and tweak it in Movie Maker, you want to create an aptly named Movie Maker Project (.wlmp) file. Simply click the Movie Maker menu icon and choose Save project. Alter -natively, you can create a project file by clicking the blue floppy-disk icon at the top left of the Movie Maker window or pressing Ctrl+S. Whichever method you use, up pops the Clicking Save project saves all of your items, music, and text as a Movie Maker Project file. When you want to work on your movie again, simply open this file to pick right up where you left off. Save Project dialog box, which lets you name your project file and decide where to save it. 2. Video files. The whole point of using Movie Maker is to create a film and show it to the world. However, only Movie Maker can open Movie Maker Project files programs like Windows Media Player can t make heads or tails of them. That s why Movie Maker can also create video files, which are for watching, not for editing. You ll want to create this kind of file when you ve finished editing in Movie Maker and are ready to share your hard work with your adoring fans.

11 2.1 Save it to your hard drive. Click the top half of the Save movie button on the ribbon s Home tab and Windows displays the Save Movie dialog box (to indicate that you re creating a video file, not a project file). Pick where to save the file and what to name it. 2.2 More options like changing movie format or Burn it to a DVD. To create a disc that can play on DVD players, click the bottom half of the Save movie button and then pick Burn a DVD from the drop-down menu. Movie Maker displays the Save Movie dialog box. Once you name your movie and choose where to save it, Movie Maker saves a WMV version of your film and sends it over to DVD Maker. 2.3 Put it online. Movie Maker can send videos directly to SkyDrive, Facebook, YouTube, Windows Live Groups, and Flickr. To tell Movie Maker where to post your movie, head to the Home tab s Share section and click the icon for your favorite site. (Movie Maker normally displays the SkyDrive, Facebook, and YouTube icons; if you re looking for the Windows Live Groups or Flickr icon, click the down-arrow button next to the YouTube icon.) After you pick a site, Movie Maker will ask for your Windows Live ID and password, as well as your username and password for the site. Click here to save a WMV version of your movie on your computer. Click here to see more saving options, like sending your movie to DVD Maker or creating a version of it for a specific kind of mobile. The Save movie menu lets you create video To post your movie online, click the icon of your favorite site files that are designed to be watched on certain gadgets, like Windows Phones. These kinds of files are called optimized files, since they re specially designed to play well on a certain kind of screen. To save your project as optimized movie file, click the bottom half of the Save movie button, and then choose the target gadget.
